Yeah. I'm at the point in the story where you have to *spoiler* fight the Guardian of Mythal to advance.

I'm playing on Nightmare. My party is geared for eliminating regular enemies and regular bosses, not taking on Dragons - its why, even despite being Level 20, I haven't even killed the Level 15 Hinterlands Dragon.

My party consists of

Blackwall - SnB

Cassandra - Two-handed

Dorian - Ice/Spirit (with Horrify taken from his special)

Inquisitor - Dagger Rogue

I've tried the fight a few times, and the same thing always happens;

Dorian will be one-shot by the windblast, period, unless he is clear across the arena and sometimes even then.

Cassandra will survive a little of the windblast, but usually die on the third flap unless she consumes a bunch of health potions.

Blackwall can tank the hell out of anything, but dies at the end when no one is left to help him.

My Inquisitor has to pop Flask of Fire and keep spamming Evade. If mess up a little, I usually drop to 50% health or die, depending on how close I was.

I can do a bit of damage and as long as I don't mess up my Evades the Inquisitor and Blackwall can live for a while, but eventually a wingblast will get the Inquisitor and that's GG.

When the dragon does the vortex thing, you need to be inside it, not outside. :)

Is your armor up to par?  Are you using tier 3 schematics and resources?

Fire resistant potions and gear will help.  If the potions are fully upgraded, you may not need fire gear at all.

As far as the vortex, stay inside and don't try and fight against it (by trying to escape it).  Reposition your ranged units after they're pulled in.

S&S Blackwall should be near invincible if properly specced, even controlled by the AI.

Dorian with Ice Array and Ice Armor should have near 80% defense across the board (magic, melee, ranged).  His Necro passives won't do him much good against a single boss character unfortunately.  So I'd program him to spam Barrier and play defense with the aforementioned Ice skills if you're not using Walking Bomb for DOT.

You may have to manually move Cassandra to a more advantageous position, as the Templar is not as defensive as a Champion.

If my Inquisitor is a melee dps, as yours is, I attack the hind legs. You'll occasionally get kicked.  As a rogue, upgraded poison grants 5% heal on hit, which can preserve your potions.  +1% Heal on hit Masterwork is universally good too.  Mighty Offensive tonics will help deal massive damage quickly.

yeah you need to be inside the wimd vortex weapon the dragons throw at your team otherwise your team takes heavy damage from it. Also you need pretty good stuff fror taking them on as they'er no slouches Dragons are boss level enemies in DA and should be treated as such if you want to stand any chance of taking one down. These fights can be quite long and hard but are very doable if you approach them right. Sounsd to me you should have practiced a little on the weaker dragons first. I figured this out pretty early on even on my first playthrough especially as I found dragon materials to be superior to most other stuff you can get in the game.

Good advice above, assuming you are willing to reload to a previous save, gear up, and try again. I'll add to the advice, consider buying some respec amulets. There are some skills combos that are really useful for dragon battles. Like setting up Blackwall to spam Horn of Valor/Fortifying Blast, Dorian should have some points in Inferno for Flashpoint and Cleanburn, some in Storm for Energy Barrage.

Your IQ should spec for Flask of Fire/Flaming Chain and you should put as many damage dealing actives on your ability slots as you can. Seven would not be too many. Who needs FoL if you can do 7 attack abilities in a row for free? Toss out Evade or any other defensive ability, like FoFr, in favor of Throwing Blades and Shadow Strike. One possible exception is Toxic Cloud to give yourself and nearby friends some Elusive.

Your IQ should be a damage dealing machine without much or any defense. Glass cannon.

Since you are going back to Skyhold anyway, change up your party. Cass/Templar doesn't bring anything to a dragon fight, unless you make her the HoV spammer. Or you cheese with Combat Roll.

Two mages would be better than two warriors. Vivienne to spam Barrier and to get right in there with Spirit Blade/Amplified Wave and Fade Cloak/Decloaking Blast. Her focus ability is also really useful as insurance in a dragon battle. Dorian should be the main ranged damage dealer, since he's spec'd for Winter.

Blackwall should have Challenge rather than Warcry and keep dragon aggro on him.

Finally, Bee Grenades. Lots and lots of Bee Grenades. Particularly on your high critical chance team members, like your IQ. Your very first action should be for your IQ to close to grenade range and throw Bees. Bees are like having an extra damage dealer in your party. You can lose Dorian and not notice the difference in damage dealt.

Good news is that you only have to knock it down to 50% health. Not like certain god-dragons on the other side of the Frostbacks ...

Wait. Your IQ is Tempest. Do you not have full 3-bar Thousand Cuts? That alone should take the dragon down to half health. At XP level 20. Assuming you have typical rogue gear with Hidden Blades procs, Master or Superb runes, and high crit/crit.

if you like micro managing, you could go in tactics mode.

i micro manage allmost every fight in tactics mode, and it works well for me, also with dragons.

upgraded protection from fire/ice/electricity work well.

fully upgraded regeneration potions work well to, and off course bee's, lots of bee's 8-)

and like others say, get inside the circle when the dragon does his pull.

in tactics i keep 2 ranged just outside of it and move em around as needed, and use 2 melee, cas or blackwall as tank

and atm me as a dagger rogue.

Set taunts as prefered skills on the tank.

as soon as he does his wind vortex, get your 2 ranged close to the dragon.

if you are tempest rogue, and take sera with you, you get 2 times thousend cuts, that will bring it down to 50% for sure.

When I did my nightmare playthrough, I made Morrigan drink the well because I wasn't going to fight that dragon. :D

What damage does the dragon have? Fire? Spirit? I can't remember. Back up and equip, upgrade, and enchant your armor and weapons with damage that the dragon can take. If it spits fire, do ice, etc, etc.

Now, I'll tell you what saved me on Nightmare. Upgrading Jar of bees and Regeneration poitions all the way and equipping everyone with it. Fully upgraded Regen potion also heals companions that are near you. Fully upgraded Jar of Bees does massive damage. Farming herbs are not that fun, but you'll be thankful in the long run. I always made runs to the waterfall camp in the hinterlands before any major mission to farm blood lotus.

Also, you may not be a Vivienne fan, but her Spirit blade can hack at the Dragon's legs for major damage.

:)
