Yes, face animation should get better, but I want that Sheploo rapeface to return in some form or another. Maybe they could put it next to the romance dialoge options to denote them in the same way other games do with the little hearts?
I hope the facial animations don't look like animatronics.

LA Noire was for an aquired taste. It has a lot of downtime in it where there's no immediate action and that usually turns away some customers. I thought it was great too. The plot was kind of eh and personally I thought it got less interesting after the homicide part where the cases were actually linked together.
My problem with LA Noire was that I couldn't tell the difference when they were supposed to show "feelings".
Considering they are building on the same engine as DAI I would think they they would simply improve upon it.

I really want to link that horrible squinty face Shepard makes the first moment in ME1, because What.

Honestly, I am keeping my expectations here very low. Facial animations by and large come down to the engine the game uses. Since we know ME:A is going to be using Frostbite and we saw an example of it with DA:I. Frostbite will produce amazing landscapes. Facial animations... not so much.

No it comes down to the skill of the animators.

I thought they animated Liara extensively in ME3. Turning her face sideways and looking up at you with those big round eyes...very realistic.
Too bad, I'm not into girls or prepubescent fantasies.

I'm not sure why DAI is the focus of this topic, as older games in the series have much worse examples of odd facial animation, particularly ME1 and 2.
Because, DAI is the cool game to hate, like DA2 before it.

I just hope that the "facial" animations are good.

All the next gen games I've played have upped the quality in this regard. Tomb Raider's are amazing.

I'm sure Bioware will follow suit.
I thought L.A. Noire went south when Cole um did that thing that seemed completely out of character for him and then you had to play as another character for quite a bit. Kind of took me out of the story. But, that has nothing to do with facial animations or how good I think the game is sooo...
I hope MEA looks at least as good as The Last of Us. I mean older Joel, who looks like someone I have seen irl, just can't remember who.
Again, Lara and Joël are set characters with set modelling and set blend shapes. You won't have that with any main character in BW game simply because the main character's modelling isn't set. They apply the same animation on the same rig for both male and female character. Of course this is going to look weird. So they need something relatively neutral that can fit these AND the variations customization introduces. At least when the customized character is not that extreme: https://www.google.c...bow6KzibnT3wAM:. I feel the engine must die a little inside whith such cases...

One developer said during the 2014 convention that BioWare would blow their entire budget doing motion capture for facial expressions. I'd rather the resources go elsewhere. Mass Effect's facial animations wasn't that bad.

It's what I've been saying all along, they're on a shoestring EA budget. The solution isn't to allocate resources better, it is for EA to shove their greed up their own rectum and increase BioWare's budget so they can make AAA games worth the rating. One developer said during the 2014 convention that BioWare would blow their entire budget doing motion capture for facial expressions. Yes they were.
I could see BioWare being on a limited budget. Since Battlefront did so poorly, and that being one of the most popular franchises EVER... I can see Mass Effect, being extremely limited.

For me this is a nice to have, low priority feature.
I like the one where a character is leaning on a table and gets up with a frustrated movement of the arms. You can see it in all ME games, DAI, and SWTOR. SWTOR in particular uses it constantly! Some of the animations were too re-used and just became hilarious to look at. I noticed many of them were then used in Dragon Age: Origins.
The one animation in ME1 where they would pound their fist on their palm...so hilarious.
But my favourite is a Jade Empire exclusive one. When they lean forward slightly and move their hand like they're chastising you. Dawn Star does it all the time. It's cute.

People stick to the same image for years. It's the same as that one picture of that one elf people post to hate on DA2 elves.

I would love for a Jade Empire 2 or just a complete reboot. I heard game did so poorly, but I loved it! I think they could revive the game and do well. The action/combat was good, great story. Few things I think it needed was voice acting and a CC.
