I am new to the Dragon Age series, but I have picked a few things up from gameplay.
I just am wondering how to raise my main hand damage with my rouge archer. My bow does 244DPS, with only 166 damage. Cassandra does 305 with her two handed weapon. Is there anyways to get my main/off hand damage to catch up with hers? Or is that just the life of a dps tempest archer? Lol. Any help is appreciated. Also, is it worth getting the game of the year edition with its dlc??

Also, I damage very easily. I put fade silverite on my armor and bow/daggers and it goes down quickly. Anyway to live longer and have health last? Thanks again everyone.

For living longer, here is some general advice. Abilities matter depending on difficulty. Warrior should have a taunt ability to keep enemies of the less armored party members. Rogues also have a job in this by targeting the squishy enemies, mages and other rogues, as these two can really put the hurt on the party. Mages if you do not have one with barrier, may need to get that asap. Barrier can actually save your life by adding some extra 'health' to the party members.

Also, crafting is also important. Rogues pretty much rely on critical hits (they are masters of it and even have abilities that help out based on it), so gearing up to do as much damage based on crafting materials is gonna be important to.

Thanks for the tips bud! So does difficulty just determine damage enemies do to you?

I made Blackwall my tank, and Cassandra a DPS, while I'm a tempest rougue DPS. I just want to do more damage than her lol. Any tips for soloing as an archer??

Not just, but yes, one of the things difficulty does is increase damage enemies do:

http://forum.bioware...mbat-mechanics/

difficulty_bonus: Bonus applied based on difficulty level. The possible values are:[/size]
  • Casual: -35%
  • Normal: 0%
  • Hard: 40%
  • Nightmare: 100%

I made Blackwall my tank, and Cassandra a DPS, while I'm a tempest rougue DPS. I just want to do more damage than her lol. Any tips for soloing as an archer??

Rogues have the highest potential sustained damage output and peak damage output of any class. DW Rogues are higher than Archers, but Archers are higher than any Warrior. So you will definitely be able to outclass your warriors (barring Combat Roll spamming). You should be able to outclass everyone in your party by a large margin.

Don't worry about DPS. That's not what is important. Instead, loot or make the bow with the highest base damage you can. Abilities multiply the bow's base damage, so the higher that is, the more damage abilities do. You get the most damage from abilities.

Don't worry that your bow's base damage is lower than your warrior's. If you have a 90 bow and Cass has a 120 axe, you feel bad, right? And if all you could do was auto-attacks, you should. But rogues have more attack abilities with higher bonuses and on shorter cooldowns. Net result is you will have higher damage output, even though your weapon has lower absolute base damage.

Then craft gear that increases your critical chance and critical damage. Rogues are all about the 50% crit chance and 200%+ crit damage. That's what you should aim for. If you have to choose, do crit chance first until around 50, then put all your effort into boosting crit damage.

Since you are a tempest, when you have enough points to fill up your action bar with 6 attack abilities, make sure you have Flask of Fire/Flaming Chain and then just use each of your attacks in order. I like this order:

First do Flask of Fire / Flaming Chain, then ...

1/ Poison Weapons
2/ Full Draw
3/ Explosive Arrow
4/ Leaping Shot
5/ Long Shot / Eagle Eye (900% damage bonus if you are far enough away)
(jog back to your enemy or pick a closer one, before the Flask runs out, and ..)
6/ Throwing Blades (or Shadow Strike)
7/ (Explosive Arrow's cooldown is usually done by the time you get to here)

Then repeat.

That sequence should do massive damage and won't cost you any stamina. If you have high critical chance and high crit damage, that should wipe out most non-boss enemies without needing to repeat, unless you have Trials enabled.

Don't worry about the Bow's damage stats not matching a 2H weapon--they will not if both are maxed out.  Your damage numbers are close to max for the base game (Tier 4 mats will take it the highest).  However, that doesn't mean a bow can't do serious damage.

As a Tempest, stack critical chance % and critical damage.  With upgraded Flask of Fire (no cost/cooldown), you can burst dps with upgraded Long Shot (900% damage upgrade).  The latter assumes you have the Trespasser DLC or Goty edition which grants a toggle for upgrades.  It's worth getting!!!!

Leaping shot gets you out of trouble, and does good damage with high critical chance/damage.

For Masterwork upgrades on your gear, +5 guard on hit from Fade Touched Silverite found around the coliseums in the eastern parts of Emprise Du Lion.  Save your stealth for when the heat is on you and you need to escape pressure.  Between that and upgraded Poison, which heals 5% life on hit with upgrade, you can replenish health and guard without relying on teammates and using all of your potions.  1% Heal on Hit from Fade Touched Snowfleur skins found in Emprise Du Lion and the Exalted Plains can also keep your health up.

For offensive masterwork, consider Hidden Blades on hit.  4 hidden blades come from Fade Touched Ring Velvet retrieved from Dead Corpses.  5 hidden blades come from Fade Touched Plush Fustian Velvet from Red Templars in Emprise Du Lion.

These are just a few tips.  Archers provide a comfortable blend of survivability and dps, regardless of Specialization.

I'm not even sure if it's possible without mage in this game on higher difficulty. That barrier is a simply must.

Which one, Descent, Trespasser or Jaws of Hakkon? But the answer to all of those DLC's is yes.

http://dragonage.wik...s_(The_Descent)

http://dragonage.wik...Jaws_of_Hakkon)

http://dragonage.wik...ms_(Trespasser)

Also, I love the new store in the Descent because you can buy a lot more dragon materials (because I don't kill Dragons outside two). Jaws of Hakkon gives you Veil Quartz, which has become my favorite stone material (health + armor rating), that can be farmed from the rifts. The Avvar cotton and Avvar Twill in JoH are also both good materials.

The 'Spoils of the Avvar' and 'Spoils of Qunari' stuff packs are in my opinion not so good, so I wouldn't put those on highest priority to buy.

* Deactivate Leaping Shot when exploring and performing combat on bridges, cliffs, etc. Falling damage is back.

* Sell any loot with Berserker effect ASAP. Gold is much better than extended combats and overuse of resources.

* Evasion is a great bonus for exploration; leaping from roof top to another, crossing broken bridges, avoiding falling damage from some jumping rather than using the stairs, etc.

+1. Fortunately, all classes have a move like this. Mage can use Fade Step, S&S Warrior can use Lunge & Slash. I guess 2H's are out of luck.

I've even used Leaping Shot for this, but it's a bit hard to go in the right direction when you are facing backwards.

Keep an eye on your Journal, so when it tells you that it is OK to leave the Hinterlands to go elsewhere, you have the option.

Whether you pick, purchase, or use both, herbs and flora are helpful for Alchemy to aid in staying alive.

The War Table has a timer that can be bypassed using your computer system clock. Advance it a day, then be sure to set it back before saving.

I recommend this order: JoH, then Descent, then Trespasser.

Obey the recommended levels for JoH. Don't go in under-leveled.

Alternatively, you could do Descent first and fairly early, like right after attaining Skyhold, in order to open the excellent Descent merchant. Only do the first half of Descent though, the ruined Thaig. Do not descend the second elevator without the Aegis ability that you can only get by doing JoH. You've been warned.

Trespasser has to be last because it has a one-way entry ... once you start it, you can't go back to Skyhold or any of the other zones.

What is the aegis ability?

A giant bubble that you place which deflects all ranged attacks from enemies. The upgrade reflects spirit damage. It is extremely useful in The Descent, especially if you're soloing.

What Gya said. It's full name is Aegis of the Rift. Don't want to spoil, but wiki details are here if you don't mind spoilers:

http://dragonage.wik...gis_of_the_Rift

It's an Inquisitor only ability and you can only get it by doing a quest in JoH DLC.

The best arms and armor will likely be crafted. That said, there are some fine items available in the field, too. See the Wikia for detailed info.

I'm talking about the dlc gear called the almighty inquisitor flames, or something like that. It was supposed to be in Skyholds undercroft in the special shipments, but I've found nothing.

The Undercroft has a chest near Dagna and the Golden Nug, if you have that available yet.

As for other gear, the Astrariums yield some pretty nice gear at times; the weapon from the Storm Coast was used often until mid-game.

It's called Flames of the Inquisition.

If you are already at Skyhold, you only get schematics. The actual armor and weapons you get first thing waking up in Haven. If you started a game and got to Skyhold and then loaded the DLC, I'm not sure what will happen. You'll get the schematics if you are lucky, but possibly get nothing until you start a new game.

Details of what's in it here:

Even if there are no schematics in the chest, check later to see if the upgraded versions show up..
