Custom Factions do not appear to work?

I am trying to setup a scenario where an NPC is in a jail cell, and there' a cut scene between you and the bad guys. Once the cut scene is over, I flip the bad guy factions to hostile. Unfortunately, they immediately start attacking the person in the jail cell.

So, I decided to try and setup a custom Neutral faction for the person in the jail cell, so they wouldn't get attack. But they still get attacked.

Do custom factions just not work? Is there another way to do this? The only other thing I can think of is to set the NPC as script-hidden for the duration of the fight. Or re-arrange the interior and put the jail cell down a hall, behind a door, so I don't have to spawn the NPC until the fight is over.

Thoughts?

Was the neutral faction you customised neutral to the bad guys' faction, and neutral to the hostile faction too? You probably did, but that's still worth checking.
You may also set the prisoner faction to hostile, and freeze him if he can harm the party from behind bars, and unfreeze him and set his faction back to whatever it was when the fight is over.

Yeah, every slot in the Neutral faction is "100", so the Neutral faction should be friendly to everyone.

Such things work for me when the neutral is at 50 with every one else. Could you try it? Otherwise check your override for the witcher stuff which gave you a situation recently. Tchos said that that was a module by all means, so it also contains the factions file in there.

i'm firmly convinced that NPC-faction vs. NPC-faction checks are oddly "reversed". In both the table and function calls.

so, like Andy says, try 50.

Yup 50 to all and all have 50 to them for my neutral faction. Also down below the table you actually get a line saying specifically "Sharks are hostile to Jets" or "Bloods are hostile to Crips" or whatever your custom factions are.

Down at the bottom you can see where it says "Commoner is neutral to Defender".

I set to 50 and then misunderstood the effect. The NPC was "attackable" but not not hostile, and I mistook it for "hostile." I expected to mouse-over her and see her as blue instead of red.

I'll try the whole sequence again and see how it works. Right now I'm script-hiding her during the battle, but would prefer not to do that.
