This is my first playthrough and I’m getting a little concerned over the mixed messages the game is sending me re: my Solas romance. I've looked up various forums for answers but I haven't found any case that was the same circumstances as mine, thus the topic.

I have:

-  kissed Solas in the Fade

-  agreed with him to let the issue drop

-  rescued the Wisdom spirit in Faded for Her

-  kissed Solas on the balcony and “formally” entered a romance with him according to the shiny wheel of serious decisions

Since then, nothing new:

I’ve taken Solas with me to Wicked Eyes Wicked Hearts and flirted with him to dance with me, but Josie came on the balcony instead (I didn’t offer her a dance because I didn’t want to risk confusing the game about who I was romancing at that stage). Not only that, but I regularly flirt with Sera, The Iron Bull, Josephine, and a dialogue with Cullen gave me the option to enter a relationship with him (same shiny wheel of serious decisions, which I promptly reloaded – not wanting to turn him down, because he’s my fallback plan in case my game is bugging about Solas). As for Solas himself, engaging him in a generic conversation only has him addressing Lavellan with “lethallan”/”dareth shiral” and not the more romantic “vhenan” option.

On the other hand, I’ve also heard the Orlesian nobles in Skyhold’s main hall gossip about “preferring a highborn scandal” and to be careful because “ears”. Internet tells me it’s romance-specific.

Main story-wise, I’m up to What Pride Has Wrought (though I haven’t entered the location yet).

Is this normal for the Solas romance (Internet tells me it’s barebones)? Is it a particularly esoteric bug?

Thank you for your time and sorry for making my first post a question about a bug...

AFAIK if you regularly flirt with other companions/advisers, the romance with Solas will terminate. Him addressing you "lethallen" should be enough of an indicator - if he's in a romance with your character, he should call you "my heart" or "vhenan".

Yeah, the romance with Solas is tenuous as it is - he's seriously conflicted and if he sees that Inky doesn't treat their involvement seriously, he'll use every chance to bow out of it.

Argh.

Okay, I'll just start from an earlier save, then. *winces* I should be good going from Faded for Her, right?

Then rush until the end and then do everyone else's sidequests. (I'll... be able to flirt again, right?)

Yeah :P What do you expect if you're going around flirting with everybody... :P

For it to have the same effect as with Dorian, mostly. :P Or, y'know, a formal break-up. :D

Question: is it just Solas who reacts like this, or should I keep the advice in mind for later playthroughs as well? Because ngl, casual flirting is one of my favorite part of dialogue.

Other question: is Dorian included in Solas' disapproval of Lavellan flirting, or can I at least keep smiling that way? *grumbles about double standards*

iirc you can friend-flirt with Dorian and it doesn't affect Solasmance. why would it tho lol, Dorian's gay and it's just banter between friends  :)

Because that’d require him to know Dorian and Cassandra’s orientations aren’t compatible with f !Lavellan and I have no way of being sure he knows that, or he knows that I know, or how strict his disapproval of flirting is! …Now I’m picturing Solas sulking because f!Lavellan flirts with Dorian right above his head, and Dorian noticing, and casually letting him know that there’s nothing there. And then Varric tells him Cassandra is very straight and Lavellan’s just bantering.

Which my Lavellan would tell him is also the case about IB and Sera if he only broached the topic. *grumbles*

Headcanoning that he’s freezing my Lavellan out because she let Sera get away with murder five minutes after she’d stopped him from getting revenge for his friend. Much more funny.

During my only Solas romance, which happened in my latest game, once I did this:

-  kissed Solas on the balcony and “formally” entered a romance with him according to the shiny wheel of serious decisions

I proceeded to pick the flirt option every single time I saw Cullen (and I saw Cullen a lot because my elf had a crush on him and kind of wanted to "accidentally" be in a romance with him). Cullen, being the fine upstanding man that he is, refused to take the bait because I was in a relationship with Solas. Then I'd rush to Solas to make sure I hadn't messed up his relationship and apparently Cullen never told Solas about my "Cullen flirting". I even tried flirting with Sera once but only got shot down by her too, because of my romance with Solas, and the Solas romance was still intact. Of course, Solas got his revenge later, when he dumped me at the same part of the game that he dumps all his elven romances.  :(

Served me right!

Update in case someone runs across a similar problem: after picking up an earlier playthrough, jumping through the Faded for Her hoopes, and failing again to have Solas address the Inquisitor, I realized "All New, Faded for Her" never appeared among my completed quests.

I took up again the first playthrough and decided to play What Pride Has Brought, just for a change of pace, before deciding whether I was going to start another playthrough entirely.

Lo and behold, I did get the Crestwood break-up.

So, to sum it, I didn't get Solas using the romanced!adress and I'm unsure whether the rest of the Inquisition realized we were together (Sera made no comment), but the storyline of the romance went as though we were together.

While this might be the case in real life, this is still a game that has to be based on certain parameters, and the code has to understand what's going on.

I don't know if there is ever a moment where Solas asks the PC about another possible LI based on flirting, but I do know that both Dorian and Sera do in fact ask before you start something with them. Whether the person asks, or does not ask, is not a double standard, it's a part of their personality. Similarly, the Blackwall romance has various obstacles related to the lock in and flirting because that's how the writer wrote him to be. The NPCs reacting differently to romance, each in their own way, is part of what makes them unique and fun.

To be honest, if one of your goals in repeat plays is to experience the various romances, I would just pick one and stick with it so you avoid all this hassle.

You'll note my first question regarded the coding as well i;e. I was wondering if I was in front of a bug or such. When I started getting answers about character personalities, I played along: it achieved much the same and it was more fun than bland whining about losing 60+ hours of play. I still don't understand how the code "gets" whether I'm romancing Solas or not, either - as my last post said, the signals have been definitely mixed.

To be honest, it was my first playthough and as such I wanted to have some opinion on the different characters' "tone" in flirts before taking a decision that would stick with me for 100+ hours. Also, it's fun.

There are certain flags set for each stage of relationship progression. Flirt 1 (yes/no), Kiss in the Fade (yes/no), and so on.

Despite the fact that there are many players who do play this way -- flirting with multiple people, sleeping with multiple people -- Bioware doesn't appear to design their romances around this other than some minimal lines of dialogue. For example, an LI might say, "Erm, aren't you and so-and-so together? Perhaps you should resolve that before talking to me again," or as Sera says, "I'm not interested in being your second." Once you do that and commit to the new LI, the romance carries on as normal as if that incident never happened, when I don't feel that should be the case. I think that changing your mind, or using someone as a rebound, should affect the flavor of a romance. But the game doesn't handle this very well in some cases and you can get relationship bugs where it thinks you're with two people (this could happen in DAO), and similar issues.

The worst is when you kiss Solas on the balcony because of the heat of the moment. And you're like...crap....gotta break up with him. You can't. Crap....gotta flirt with other people so Solas breaks up with me....you can't.

WHY DID I KISS SOLAS? I KNOW WHAT'S COMING!!!! BOO HOO!

*replays Inquisition*

*romances Solas again*
