Hit a rough point in Redcliffe

I'm playing through Origins for the first time, but have hit something of an obstacle.  While the game had been pretty manageable, I got to the part where I sneak into Redcliffe Castle and fight a bunch of undead and dog grunts, and I'm getting massacred around the halfway point.  I also am out of poultices and healing items, making survival even trickier.

I was hoping I could go somewhere else and grind against other enemies to level up and maybe find some poultices as loot, but I did a little Googling and read that grinding isn't really a feature in this game.  I also have no idea if there's any place at this point where I can buy poultices and/or stronger armor; I have a lot of money saved up and my inventory's almost full, so I'd like to sell some of it.

Can anyone help me out?  The answer might be obvious on where to go or what to do, but I picked up the game after a few months of inactivity to finish the Redcliffe part and might have forgotten it.

There should be a smith in the village you can trade with, unless you killed him or abandoned the town. The tavern will also stock some poultices and recipes. Otherwise, it's safe to leave redcliffe now that you're past the night phase, so you can buy some from camp or a different area.

Also, if you're at the fight I think you're referring to, you should be able to fight the dogs separately.

Those dogs are tough. If you have a rogue that can lay traps, you should have them go into Stealth, sneak ahead and lay some traps in the two doorways. Then go out of Stealth and have them chase you into the corridor where your party waits.

What are some good areas to visit on the world map for shopping?  I tried the one nearest to Redcliffe and it was just a town of refugees.

Lothering has a couple of merchants. Barlin sells some stuff in the tavern and there's another unscrupulous merchant set up there.

You could also go to Denerim. It has some decent shops.

After Lothering, go to Dalish camp first even if you don't want to do the quest, just go there to shop...you can buy unlimited Elfroots and then making health poultices, after shopping just leave the camp, you can come back later to do their quest

Redcliffe Castle at lower levels can be a pain. If your team has Cone of Cold and some talents that can crit you can set up an ambush and some shatter combos. Position your characters with Hold activated so they don't get caught in the AOE. Mighty Blow, Overpower, Critical Shot, Stone Fist etc. can shatter frozen enemies of normal and critter rank. You can insta-kill around 3-4 enemies making large mobs easy to manage.

The kennel is probably the hardest part since you are swarmed and the dogs are fairly tough.  The skeletons swarm you, but aren't quite as bad.

I usually do Redcliffe after Circle Tower, and just did it the other night that way.  2H hero, DW Leliana, Morrigan, Wynne which means I had good CC, ok DPS and heals.  I agree with above about Cone of Cold, one of the best spells to get ASAP on Morrigan.  For the dogs, I used Force Field on the elite one, then tried to Cone of Cold as many as possible.  Then tried to kill as many as possible before the FF wore off.

Also IIRC, you don't have to sneak into the castle after you defend the village.  You just need to walk past Teagan on the hill instead of talking to him.  If you have a save after the night battle and keep finding the castle too frustrating, that might be an option.

Actually, you cannot skip past Teagan, since the gate portcullis is closed and you can't open it from the outside. Only way in there is through the secret passage which Teagan gives you his ring for. (signet ring opens the passage)

I'm talking about leaving Redcliffe, not getting into the castle without talking to Teagan.

I don't remember if you actually have to talk to him before you leave the town at all, but you certainly can leave Redcliffe after defending the town but before you infiltrate the castle.
