This is a nice little mess. I'm sorry about this nonsense guys. I will be re-creating the venting thread, with the stipulation that we're going to have to be cautious about naming specific posters on the forum, as soon as I get home from work.

 

I did double check on the group privacy setting and Nightscrawl is of course right. The place is private, but if someone already had a link to a particular thread...

 

Anyway, I received my first warning point today, so I'll definitely have something to vent about. I'm sorry to anyone who also received a warning point about this.

Just to be perfectly clear, my understanding is that someone not in the group needs a direct link to a specific thread in order to view it. They shouldn't be able to view the general group discussion, and then see the new thread.

 

So, we're safe if we're careful.

You can see someone's posts on their profile. I don't know if group posts are then filtered by group access (so you can only see posts in groups you have access to) but I suspect not. So, as far as I know you can see the most recent posts in a group by going through the profile of whoever made them.

 

It all seems a bit leaky.

Apparently we also turn up in the "view new content," as well, so as private as I made the thread, the bottom line is that we'll never be completely hidden, even if we were to make an all new group.

 

But we can still vent, and we can still refer to specific threads. It won't be that bad.

I sent the mod a very polite message asking that the thread get reopened, with the condition of not naming any names. I also did mention that I see posters getting called out all the time on the public forums, and part of the reason for that thread was to warn others about trolls for the sake of forum civility. This might be as useful as peeing into the wind, but I had to try.

So yeah, we'll just stick to linking threads and discussing the posts without naming names. If someone is a real problem poster, we'll just send PMs.

But you can still prevent people from viewing anything in the group unless they are a member. I've done this with my group after recent...happenings.

So, Nat has suggested that we wait just a little while to recreate the venting thread, on the slim chance that we hear a response from the mod she messaged. What do you guys think?

Well, I checked and double checked. In the ranks setting, under guest, absolutely none of those boxes marked. So, I'm feeling like an all new thread will be the best thing, because then there's no way for a non member to get a direct link unless someone sends them one.

Gah, I had something to vent about a while ago too The moment has passed now, but at the time I wanted to do more than name and shame another user. It's probably a good thing I didn't get a chance because I would have over-reacted. Ah well, karma is just coming back to get me since I once did the very thing I was mad at this other person for doing. Seems there is no statute of limitations on karma.

If you log out, you can see all of the groups on the subforum Social Groups. All of the links there take you to the Group Discussion pages for all of those groups, regardless of whether you are a member, and you can read the threads.
 
If you are logged in, the Social Groups subforum shows only those groups that you are a member of.
 
So if someone has a burr up their butt about this group, they can see all of the goings on by simply logging out.

Ugh, that's a good point. Thanks for looking into that. Eh, as long as we are careful, they would have no reason to complain. Best way to deal with that. Also, if anyone is harassed by another poster, we'll just report them and tell each other who to avoid via PM.

On the mod front: if the modbot doesn't respond, try hitting up Fozee.

She reopened the Sera and DQ threads when they got locked.

It's for the best too. While it makes lurking a hassle, it did allow me to save some real gems.

So since the vent thread is locked I"m just gonna put this here. Just found out less than ten minutes ago there is a murder on the loose in my area, kind of freaking out more than I should be at the moment. Aside from doing normal things like locking up I've also blockade my room door since it has no lock have all the lights off and am going to be sleeping with a knife tonight. Probably over-reacting just a touch but I scare easily.
