Fallout 3 had age progression of the lone wanderer, I think it would be a cool way to approach andromeda. Imagine being a child while on your way to andromeda and you get to live your youth in a limited fashion like how you did in fallout 3 and let's say by time you arrive your parents or foster parents are old and as you head out of the "intro" you have a small heartfelt dialogue scene kinda like how Cooper did with his daughter in interstellar.

At it's conclusion you'd have a short flashback of your childhood only to realize you were the starbrat.

Sounds like fable three.

I have no desire to run around the Ark with a toy pistol pretending to be 'The Shepard'

I wanna skip ahead 20 years and outshine him and the Reapers and forget the catalyst ever existed coz Ryder.

I dislike instantly aging characters within most video games. They are too contrived when one second you are a kid and boom you are an adult.

Assassins Creed games frequently have age progression; when they pull it off, it's great - hey look, that teenager Ezio is now a badass Master Assassin with a network of agents across Italy. When they fail, thoug, they fail horribly - "hey, look, that cute, badass native child is now a grown ass man with no personality of his own and still hung up on daddy issues".

So, it comes down to writing, I guess.

I'm not sure if I'd like a huge time skip, that usually leaves me wanting to know what happened between then and now.

That being said, I'm definitely on board for a playable origin or background this time around, it was something I felt would've been a fun thing in the original trilogy.

What's the benefit to the story or character?

What's the benefit to the story or character?

could be an origin story type deal? By having parents you had a good life on the ark and blah blah fast forward time to make your dying parents proud. Etc. Really it'd be a way to kill two birds with one stone, you get backstory via origin and you get to connect with the character. Not sure how it would exactly but it wouldn't exacerbate the story at all

Why would we need to play as a child to have a backstory? And isn't the whole "parents are dead, must make them proud" cliche entirely overdone?

This being a colonization thing, some time skips along the road might lead to you seeing different enviroments, colonies in different stages of development, and so on. Maybe having different world states depending on previous choices in the game.

There are possible benefits. But then, writing would have to be strong enough.

You would need a pre-fab character in order to do it while In ME:A you would probably have a character creator.

In that case they should create an endless number of child models in order to reflect the character you created, and it would be a huge waste of resources for a mere intro.

Nope.

I want to focus on new worlds, planets, and a real good plot, not on my main character as a kid, growing up for hours ...  sorry ;)

Fallout 3's opening was terrible and the main reason why I created a backup save right before exiting the vault, so that if I ever do decide to replay the game, I'll at least not have to endure the opening again.

I believe there are, at least, one mod that adds alternative beginnings if you are interested and playing on PC.
