What do you think the origin story will be for ME:A?

For the trilogy it was Earthborn, Spacer or Colonist; Sole Survivor, War Hero or Ruthless.

I'm pretty sure Earthborn will not be an option for ME:A, spacer and colonist will probably be on there.

War Hero and Sole Survivor may not make sense unless we have been in Andromeda for a long time and there was some kind of war/conflict.

What options should there be when we choose the origin story?

Did I miss something and someone leaked the name of the protagonist or it comes from Ghostriders in Sky playing during the last trailer?

Anyway, for the backgrounds I'd say we should have career military, freelancer/mercenary or some kind of specialist with civilian origin who is tasked with leading the mission because of his/her skills.

For psych profiles, the originals from the trilogy would work well (with different backstories, ofc). I don't see any reason why sole survivor wouldn't make sense, if our hero comes from the Milky Way, he could've been a part of some conflict there.

All we can do at the moment is speculate since we know so little about the game. My head-canon right now is that ME:A takes place 500 years after the trilogy (I'm assuming it takes around that time for the ark ship to travel in FTL to Andromeda. Also, devs have confirmed that ME:A will take place long after the trilogy and in my mind that long time is 500 years). If it takes that long to reach Andromeda the only way the protag could be from the Milky Way is if all the travelers on the ark are in stasis pods (which could be possible).

the name was in the first video of bioware if you watch it low motion  on the left side of the screen on the ship tablet >> there is a soldier medallion with a name >> ryder

I actually don't like the name Ryder for the protag, but it would be fitting for the exploration theme BioWare is going for. I do like the idea of a freelancer/mercenary background.

It took me a long time to actually see Ryder on the dogtag, it was very blurry. I had to replay the video like 10 times.

I wonder if they will be an Earthborn if the ARK theory is correct. Sent into space before the reaper invasion to find humanity another home.

But maybe if they're a spacer or a colonist they'll be more suited to find humanity a home instead of being loyal to Earth.

I dunno, man. I wish we could get some info soon. :(

I'm hoping for something involving being bitten by a radioactive Keeper.

Not enough information on when the story takes place to rule out anything

Until real info is given just about anything and everything is possible

He grows up in a suburban househouse, listen to My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy, doesn't have a good relationship with his parents because he thinks no one understands him and how terrible his life and everything around him is. He dresses in black to reflect the darkness he feels, then he grows up and marries a girl named Shawda

I would prefer the protagonist not have an origin story and instead have the backstory be ambiguous.

I'm confused as to why people are using the name Ryder. It was on a dogtag you say? Fantastic, but shouldn't a soldier going to action be wearing said dogtag? Leaving it behind defeats the purpose, no?

I'd prefer this as well and to have the protagonist fill out their background and opinion on it through plenty of dialogue options.

Bioware hasn't confirmed when the journey to Andromeda starts.

Well, I definitely don't want them to repeat Shepard's origin stories, but I like the setup of choosing between three general origins and three career profiles.

I'd most like them to borrow from DAO with playable origins, and writing some characters who turn up in the origin also play a role in the main game.

I liked when our past came up in the first Mass Effect, or even just to jump-start some thoughts on who your protagonist is. Playing a Colonist, for instance, you can go with a Shepard who's very antagonistic towards Batarians. Maybe not particularly creative, but it still gives your Shepard some character that you can then add on to.

If it's not going to be referenced in dialogue or open its own quest(s), however, I'd probably prefer to not have a selectable background story. Guess it depends on how much focus there'll be on the new setting and our place in it... Might not be a whole lot of room for Ryder's background.

Its purpose was, we assume, to hint at our protagonist's name in a sneaky manner. The trailer wasn't a 100 % accurate depiction of what happens in the game :) don't take everything too literally :P

ME:A 'tak[es] place far away from and long after the events of the original trilogy', so not during ME3, no. However, as Hanako Ikezawa points out above, the journey to Andromeda might well start at any point in time, during, after or even before the Reaper War.

I'd say for an "untested" soldier, between the ages of 18-25.  Probably joined  because he/she has the opportunity to see new worlds.

Ex-convict should be an origin option, would make sense if you act Renegade or if you're Paragon you could retcon the idea of a man/woman trying to make amends for their past habits.

Depends. If we're going to be military, it would take some extraordinary circumstances to have a criminal past.

If we're civilian, though, and it had an impact on how others interacted with you (both positive and negative), I'd be all for it :)

Hm, I kinda hope that the Ark was a generation-ship - meaning that the people embarked back in our Galaxy are long-dead and the ones arriving in Andromeda are their offsprings. So almost none (except Asari maybe, could make for some interesting discussions with them) would have any real knowledge of the galaxy far, far away. So no dealing with having lost home, family or stuff like that, but people that only knew space-living for decades/centuries and now want to create their homes in a new land, looking forward for opportunities, not looking back with worries and fear (as, you know, ME3-victims like me also try to do ^^)

So on the ship itself they had them trained and honed as specialists, but the protag would still be young and rather unexperienced, not the die-hard soldier Shepard was. Yet I don't even know if I need "backgrounds", and actually doubt there will be any. But if really needed maybe in regards to her training on the Ark, or parents she had, or some "incidents" like surviving a hullbreach, helping fending off a raid of unknown aliens on the Ark some time prior to the game?

The trailer implies the ark leaves during the Reaper War, but it is likely the ark sets out some point late in ME3's story so there is a story justification for having all of the familiar species aboard. If it sets out early, Quarians shouldn't be aboard for example.

By the point it sets out the war would likely have been raging for several months, so assuming the protagonist is military I would think he or she would have been involved in combat with the Reapers / Cerberus prior to ending up on the Ark.
