In Skyrim, I liked Marcurio best. His cocky reassurances when we searched underground areas was slightly charming, but then meeting characters like Serana in the dawnguard DLC just made the whole awful marriage mechanic more frustrating, because it showed that they're capable of making multidimensional characters who have chemistry with the PC, but instead of allowing for something more to develop with those characters, they scatter a bunch of flat characters around the map and let you recruit one of them as your live in money machine.
Yeah, that was pretty disappointing. I tried a few of the different marriages and they were all a bit blah. In fact, companions that were previously more chatty (even if it was the same old ambient comments) became even quieter after marrying them. So they were basically just a human backpack/live bait for enemies. I still married them anyway. Hey, if I'm imagining a personality for my character, might as well imagine a romance too. ![]()
Hopefully in the next game, they'll take some tips from FO4?
I always married a bunch of different people in Fable 2/3, just to see how many families I could manage before it all fell apart (usually about five). It was pretty cute having a little quest and a bit more history with Elliot in F3. It's too bad we couldn't just romance our allies instead of random NPCs though. I personally prefer having fewer options with more personality than lots of Bland Bobs like in Skyrim/Fable.
I enjoyed the romance in FO4. They've probably got the nicest ones after Bioware imo. You fall in love after getting to know them, it depends on their opinion of you etc. Very cute. The companions could use a bit more personal story/development all round, but I liked them a lot.
Recently I started playing Fire Emblem Awakening, and that's got a great feature for romance. You have a huge range of companions and if they're paired in combat often enough, they'll get 3-4 unique conversations with each other. Some end in marriage/declarations of love. That's pretty entertaining, since there's a huge variety of combinations. The player character gets to marry pretty much anyone of the opposite gender. Apparently FE: Fates offers a same-sex romance of either gender, so I'm looking forward to trying that when it's released here. Having a kid is a pretty important gameplay/character development feature in FE so same-sex will probably hinder me in that respect, but I hear the bi male option is great. Not so much the bi female unfortunately (creepy stalker apparently).
There's also some games that technically have romance options, like The Witcher 3, Life is Strange and Tales from the Borderlands. I enjoyed them, but I don't consider them 'romance options' in the same way as Bioware's.

Skyrim marriages are probably Bethesda's first try on romances so in that sense they were pretty nice. It's just that there is tons of options and majority of characters I would have wanted to romance in the game aren't even within those (like there is no romance from thieves Guild, but random beggars and miners are options wtf). It's true that there is not much content-wise. I modded one of characters I wanted to romance as option, but still most he does is stay in home making pies and keeping shop- and welcomes my character home.. they would really need bit more characterization in terms of marriages and romances ^^;
I really like FO4 romances and they are my favorites after Bioware's as well. You have pretty many options and all romances and LI's are different from each other. Though I dislike how romances and flirts are tied on your Charisma. I'd prefer them being tied at least to approval since FO4 has approval system with companions already.
I still kind of wish that Deacon and Nick had been made romance options in FO4.
We know that Deacon was already thinking of bringing the Sole Survivor into the Railroad and had been keeping tabs on them way before we meet him... and AbilityDrain did a great video on how he might have been actually waiting for us to leave Vault 111, perhaps suspecting a link between us, the Gen-3 Synths and the Institute? Plus the guy has a ton of charisma and is extremely fun to be around.
Nick would have made for a great romance as well, he's also charismatic in a very understated way. He's definitely one of the most memorable and interesting characters we met in FO4, and like Piper, ties very much into the main storyline. I suspect that Glory would probably be a shipper on deck if we'd hooked up with Nick, because we know she thinks older model synths need love too!

I thought that was pretty weird too! We get to know Brynjolf and Karliah fairly well for instance, but they're never a marriage option. Meanwhile Random Person #45 at a random village is available. I was rather disappointed that Serana wasn't too, she was one of the few characters with a genuine bond to the player character. It's not a bad place to start though!
It'd definitely be good if future romance options were based on making the right dialogue choice rather than charisma. Especially since people (including myself on the first play) go to silly lengths to circumvent the restriction, like dressing up in sunglasses, a glittery dress and fancy hat in the middle of a swamp, just because Piper wants to chat. It kinda takes the charm out of the romance progression!

Those two are my favourite characters so they're almost my constant companions anyway. I swap in the others sometimes, but mostly I just alternate Nick and Deacon. *sigh* I would've loved a romance option for either one, or both. I swear a lot of their lines sound like flirting anyway!

I drank couple beers before talking to Preston
That drunken mumbling must have been very charming.

You can't relate to that?
The game we mentioned, Eldet, has launched a demo and a kickstarter. It already got funded, so it's going to be a pretty big visual novel game. Go check it out!

My first ever Kickstarter pledge. ![]()
It is SO awesome that he exceeded his goal pretty much immediately. It certainly shows the demand.
I finally played the demo and was really surprised by how much I enjoyed it! I've never played a visual novel game before. I'm really quite excited to play the whole thing, now
.
Kunal is freaking adorable.
Somewhat related, playing this with no vocal dialogue has made me realize more than ever that the awkwardness I have with DAO now is not so much with the silent protagonist itself, but with the fact that everyone else is voiced while the PC is silent. But with this, all characters are silent, so that feeling is not present.
Play it till the end again, and you'll get a little surprise (you can load from a save, I discovered this when I wanted to check Kahina's route).
Kunal is a total cinnamon roll ![]()
I'm surprised that he put in so much work into the facial expressions. Practically every scene has its own set. Visual novels usually go for for three drawings and cycle them throughout the whole thing, and here you have 3 outfits in such a short time already. Judging by the usual quality of Marccus' work, this will be a very polished game.
And agreed on VA, it has to be consistent, staring blankly while everyone else speaks felt super awkward. That's what broke Origins a little for me.
Fallout 4, currently romancing Piper.
So has anyone checked out the Technomancer yet? It's made by Spider Games (the group that made Bound by Flame). That game was an action RPG with romance options. I've heard middling to okay things about it (sounds like it's the type most of us would like), although I chose not to buy it because it only had straight romances. I actually got in touch with the developers to request that they include s/s romances in the future and I heard back from them right away saying that they were developing a new game that included it, likely the Technomancer.
So it was just released last week and it does include s/s romances from what I hear. Although only m/m because it's a customizable fixed protagonist who's a male. I might check it out, but was wondering what others have heard/seen of it before drop the dough on it. It's also an action RPG, but this one is sci fi and set on dystopian Mars.
I've been meaning to check it out, because it ticks a lot of boxes for me - a sci-fi ARPG set on Mars with m/m romance? Yes, please. But the reviews I've been reading are worrying. The combat system is supposedly frustrating (and not in a Dark Souls kind of way, just plain annoying), the story and voice acting have good moments, but are really weak at times. It sounds like a buy later game. I'm busy with Inquisition DLCs right now, anyway.

It's....interesting, to say the least. It...feels like Mass Effect Lite at times. And the main character's voice acting leaves a lot to be desired.
The menus are kind of confusing, and some of the stuff you need to know isn't explained well and so you learn a lot of stuff through Trial by Error.
As for the romances, I've only run into the one s/s, Andrew, so far, but I don't know if there are others.
Funny you should mention Technomancer. A tumblr person I follow (who likes m/m romances) made this gif set (it's SFW). I would have just posted them here but it's four gifs lol... I don't consider this spoilery, but then again I don't even know which of these guys is the protagonist.
The animation looks a tiny bit wonky and their faces seem to be frozen in the same expression, but other than that it does seem nicely choreographed.
DanaDuchy is doing the Maker's work. That's my main source, when I'm looking for Fallout, ME, or DA dialogue.
