I find it's fine on gold, with the right setup. Either I maximize its damage with the appropriate kits (MM kits, Infiltrators, esp. the AIU) and consumables, or I use it as omniblade holder and/or ammo primer on the right kits (Cryo builds, Shaman, Krentinel spring to mind, but there are a bunch of others)... now I feel like speccing the AIU for melee and getting a bit of everything
I personally don't like it much because of all the clicking, plus I find its ammo reserve frustratingly low, but it's a viable gun, which can provide a bit of variety in gameplay.
Or to put it another way...
It is tolerable on kits which do incredible amounts of damage (and thus would do even more damage with a better weapon), or it's only good for ammo priming and melee, ie when you're not relying on it for direct damage.

Or to put it another way...
Once you reach a certain knowledge of the game, it balances kits which do incredible amounts of damage, so that they feel challenging again ![]()
Jokes aside, your argument is valid, and there are definitely better options. However, the point is that if you like the gun - whatever the reason might be - it can be made effective on gold. I agree the Scimitar's damage is underwhelming among shotguns, but if you like the mechanics, or how it looks, or you like it for lore reasons, there are ways to make effective use of it.
As for using it for ammo priming and melee, I personally didn't feel the lack of direct damage was much of a factor. For example, I have used it successfully (I had fun with it and felt like I was contributing) with a melee specced Shaman on Gold: I backhanded mooks and relied on FEs and biotic explosions for bosses; I didn't mind trading weapon damage for faster cooldowns and good priming - though again, its low ammo reserve would force me to run to ammo boxes a little too often. (I know the wraith would give me all that and damage, but variety is the spice of life
)

It is full auto, but it fires faster if you do it manually. After testing, Marksman doesn't speed up the fire rate enough unless you still do it manually. Conclusion: you need lots of clicking for it to be somewhat effective.

I was sooo excited when I got home yesterday. I thought it will be a feeling like unlocking a new gun. Holy sh!t, full-auto Scimitar, y'know? Marksman? Pfff, I want the real experience of ful-auto and went (partly to be safe and not have to rely on weapon) with Paladin.
What a disappointment. The ROF is that low, refire delay nearly meets the cooldown for my powers. Had to click manually like always.
I blame Marksmad for causing my enthusiasm which got crushed hard.

Oh alright fine, I'll be honest. No gun is that bad, but I'm just biased against all shotguns. With a sniper rifle, I can get 20 headshots by wave 5 if I have to. But with a shotgun, I couldn't land a single headshot to save my life. I have this problem with practically every game I've played, at close range, I find it impossible to focus on a target and shoot everywhere but where the enemy is standing. It really just makes shotguns stressful to use, and why I find most of them unappealing.
I like sniping a lot but I like close quarters, in your face combat even more. In fact in most games I tend to use the sniper rifle like a bolt action shotgun but with the added advantage of being able to engage at long ranges.
But when using a shot gun, you don't really need to always aim for headshots since most shotguns have a large enough damage output up close to make swiz cheese out of most enemies. It's like a risk reward system with the damage of the shotgun balancing out the risk of going up close with a bunch of enemies. This is the reason why I'm not a big fan of the scimitar because if I'm gonna use something that's the equivalent of a water pistol, I'd rather do it at a distance.
Also as to the viability on gold, is there any weapon in game that isn't viable with the right amps and gear?

I had a laggy game when the Scimitar sometimes shot twice in rapid succession, like the Raider. Or it's not lag, but batarian mad skillz? ![]()

When it comes to traditionally underpowered shotguns, I actually prefer the Katana myself.
Scimitar never packed enough of a punch for me, for a shotgun.

My favorite weak shotgun is the Disciple. Slap the Disciple with Phasic rounds on the Asari Adept, and it synergizes pretty well. It drops shields without messing up your biotic explosions, and you look like a real Asari Commando while doing it.

Things you get for loving the Scimitar.
In the middle of a PUG, it just glitched. No animations at all, no sounds. It still used thermal clips when I held the fire button, but did no damage to anything.
On the flip side: if you hold the shoot button and then mash space (or whatever your "omni-action" button is) in a certain rhythm, Scimitar turns into mini-Piranha. Can't do it reliably yet, but it's not lag-related because I tried it on host, and it works. Seems to be an unholy alliance of reload cancel and pizza running mechanics.

When I first started the game one of the early kits I unlocked was a QMS, then I got a scimitar. I put the two together, took them out into a match, then quit the game for three months afterwards.

Uh I like it on my Shadow with om-non-nom-ni-blade V attached. Also I can't hit crap with shotguns so it helps when I can fire again after I miss with the first shot and the second and the third.

So, I tried this GE build yesterday with the Scimitar. It was OK, I guess. More fun than any other Scimitar build I have tried. I scored about 100k in 8 Gold waves. I use the same build with the Phaeston, and the Phaeston is about 10 times better.
