I am fine with this.

where we can grow attached to our protagonist over multiple game. Grow attached to the same individual characters over multiple games. I
The approach to Me over the next few games should be dictated by the story they are telling. If they want to tell a longer story arc for Ryder then a single stand alone game like those for DA would be insufficient and force the story to be condensed and feel rushed. Not something I'd want to see. If they have no specific idea for ME:A2 (for lack of a better title) then continuing Ryder for the sake of Ryder might be a bad plan, again it would depend on the story written. As much as Players want X,Y or Z it really shouldn't be dictated by us but by the needs of the story.
If they need multiple games to tell a single story like the saga of Shepard then they should take it. If they have multiple separate stories that fit well with a DA approach to storytelling then they should do that. What the shouldn't do is listen to their fans as to what they should do because we don't have all the facts so we can't make any INFORMED decisions.

The one about Garrus:

"Hudson says he hasn't read much Mass Effect fan-fic, but when he's working, "sometimes I'll open up a window on DeviantArt and go through the Mass Effect fan art." And he says it's more than just idle curiosity that has him flipping through fan-made images — "going back to Star Wars, I've always thought that the things that people draw are the things they remember. You can't draw something you don't remember." So when he looks at fan-art on DeviantArt, it tells him "what designs resonate with people, or what moments resonate. It shows what people are interested in and what worked for them."

So what does he see a lot of on DeviantArt? The Shepard-Garrus romance. As you might already know, Garrus wasn't originally going to be a love interest for Shepard, because Garrus is an exoskeleton-wearing alien. But the fans demanded it, so Bioware added a Shepard-Garrus romance in ME2. Says Hudson:It sort of culminates in a really sweet scene where Shepard is forehead to forehead with Garrus, with the blue fish tank in the background in this beautiful little scene. That seems to be one of the most duplicated moments in fan art that I've seen-many, many recreations of their particular Commander Shepard with Garrus. It's really neat to see a scene like that obviously meant a lot to people."
Here we go with fan service again.... it's a reason why people like Bioware. They listen to their fans and try to improve on what is liked and disliked. (Most of the time!)
Other games just do what they want. (Assassin's creed in Feudal Japan, the fans cry! No! Says Ubisoft. Here's 6 more games about Europe!)
I think fan service is great. Liara bugged me, yes, but I don't B**** about it. I loved the Garrus and Tali opportunities that Bioware took. As well as Cullen in Dragon Age. Yes, fan service. Pick your battles, says I!
Anyway, on topic.
Dragon Age is cool with how they reboot the protagonist every game. But that's Dragon Age. I feel a bigger bond to Mass Effect because it expanded on the Universe and characters in such a way across 3 games that I'll never forget.
But I won't complain whether they do standalone or sequel. Just gimme it.

As long as they carry over the way they tell the story and continue to let the player make choices for their character that let the characters reflect what we/player is doing through out the series, I'd enjoy this.
I had a lot of Shepards. I played it continually from the release date in 2007 through ME2 and I had paragons, a few renegade and a lot of balanced/mixed between the two. I enjoyed ME2 but I did get irritated when my Paragon Shepard made comments that didn't fit her personality especially with the wounded merc that you talk to when picking up Grunt. And then in 3, none of my mixed/balanced Shepards were able to pick a neutral option. And there was a definite problem with Fem Shepards tone more than once in 2. Things that wouldn't have bothered me if it had not been a carry over story.
If they are going to develop a series where they let us develope the character in the first game and let us watch them grow into a personality we've helped build, and then decide it's too much work to carry over this options, I'd much rather start over with someone new.
I hope we get at least another trilogy, but I would prefer more. One thing I LOVE about ME1, ME2, and ME3 is that it's all connected and we play the same character with the same people. I wouldn't mind if side characters and squad members to come and go but playing the same protag is very important to me.
But that's just my preference. I'm sure others have their own.
I would like ME game to play as Turian soldier fighting the Krogan (and vice versa), Krogan fighting the Rachni (ditto), C-Sec officer on the Citadel, Justicar, thief/assassin in the pre-Reaper Era, Quarian/Geth during the Morning War, pirate in the Terminus systems, Krogan Warlord or Battlemaster at some period in their history, explorer in Andromeda* or Milky Way [before the Reaper Wars], undecided Turian during the Unification Wars, Prothean in their cycle and etc.
The possibilities are endless.
* I know, we do this in MEA and I like it a lot. As long as BW don't make humanity special and stuff.
My money is on a new trilogy!
The Milky Way was awesome but i think we won't be seeing it ever again in ME and i'm ok with that ![]()
The problem with the continuing arch is that certain people want their version of their protagonist and their protagonist's relationships to take precedence over another person's version. And BioWare obliges. This is why so many people hate Liara (always in Shep's cabin forced friendship) and Garrus ("No Shepard without Vakarian" forced friendship). These two were the most popular and had the loudest fanbases and BioWare catered to them. Every one else got schlock (outside of the Citadel dlc).
I mean why do we need to follow one protagonist. They always end up becoming Space Jesus in the end. In ME1 it was about humanity and Shepard leading humanity by example. In ME3 it was only one special person (the Shepard) can save the entire galaxy and every species. For me it takes one game for my character to achieve something great, settle down if I want, and get old and die, and then on to a new story.
Indeed. While I loved Shepard as a protagonist and all, Bioware wasn't capable to end her voyage to please all fans with all the expectations burdened upon this character after three games. Many people always called for Shep to die gloriously, me and others wanted a more positive ending (without rainbows, mind you ...). And we just grew so attached to "our" Shepard that it hurt so bad the shitestorm of ME3 was launched...I mean, bioware can be kinda proud their main char has become so popular and loved to cause such a reaction! But really, I had enough of it ^^
For Andromeda? I hope for stand-alone games. Thoguh with an overbranching story arc, just one not as severe and doomsday-like and inevatable like the Reaper-Invasion.
Andromeda and future games in this world should tell how milkyway-colonists settled themselves down and become part of the new galaxy. That doesn't happen within the lifespan of only ONE character like our new Shepard. Instead it would take centuries.
Andromeda 1 = How we arrive in the galaxy, and our very first steps (building Jamestown and come in contact with the natives etc). Also we do not access ALL of the galaxy just like that in game one, merely a fraction will be explored by us at this time. small hints at larger things going on are planted...
Andromeda 2 = Several decades or even centuries later. There is more than Jamestown now, we have established the 13 colonies. Instead of tension with the english motherland however we get into trouble with a very powerful race or instituation in Andromeda
Andromeda 3 = even farther into the future. Our colonies are almost as powerful as they were back in the milky-ways. But once more war seems to loom at the horizon. Maybe an outside-threat from even another galaxy, Reaper-like maybe? A little call-back to the original trilogy, though problem and solution contained in one game. No starchildren allowed though ^^
Just some thoughts though. Because I want Andromeda to be more about this voerarching story of colonization, not about the love-affairs of one character. I am aware though lots of people will prefer to play the same protagonist all the time, but I think that would be a waste. Also I still consider the Warden, even Hawke and now the DAI-Quizzy all to be great in their own right - and none of them was shafted as hard as Shepard, and none of their story-ends felt as bad as Shepard's
And after Andromeda 3? We go back in time: Mass Effect Reboot: The entire trilogy retold with massive changes (for the better^^) to the story. Hey, if Bioware loves to look at fanfic, they should do that for stories as well ... most stuff is actually better than what they came up with ...
Hm, I want to see how good the new protagonist will be before I'm going to say "yes I want 3 or more games with him". If the protagonist/s is/are any good then I'm open for a new trilogy.
i don't think they should tie them themselves down to an either or situation.
I think it might make sense for Andromeda to be a single self contained adventure, allowing them to test the water about the new galaxy.
I'd love to see Bioware have another stab at a duology/trilogy approach though because whilst there were things that weren't done perfectly there are definite advantages to getting to roleplay a character over a wider 2/3 game period.
After seeing CDPR drop the ball for TW3, at least in regard to it being a proper sequel, I'm all for stand alone in an established universe. Bioware had the right idea about this with Dragon Age.
I have mixed feelings about it.
A standalone would at least open the possibility of returning to the Milky Way in the next game, something I'd probably be stoked for. As much as I think the Andromeda setting could be interesting, I'm hoping the Milky Way setting hasn't been permanently abandoned.
On the other hand I was much more invested in Mass Effect's cast of characters than most of those from the Dragon Age series, and a large part of that is that since Mass Effect followed the same cast over two or three games, they had more time to develop them. I don't think there is any scene in the DA series that matches the emotional punches of Thane or Mordin's deaths, or ME3's farewell scenes. A duology or trilogy would provide more opportunities for the devs to get you invested in their characters.
Stand alone game with absolutely zero save import now or going forward
Pretty sure Bioware won't make that kind of decision until they see how ME:A is received. You certainly don't want to write it as the first part of a trilogy and then have it bomb badly. This first game will likely be a stand alone story with a 'hook' at the end, much like ME1. That way if its well-loved they can do a sequel or trilogy, and if its hated then can alter plans and drop the whole thing or do something different.
I want a new trilogy. Plain and simple.
In fact, I think a major part of Garrus' popularity is due to fangirls, even though they are, what is it, 18% of the fanbase.
I think they should repeat the experiment that was the ME series and this time plan out things ahead of time.
i think Andromeda will be a stand alone game, or just the plot of the story on it.
I know ppl dont like DA aproch but i kind like it, since allow us to explore diferents characters, on a over all story.

Still i think for what they been saying about Andromeda, will be a whole game on how we get and we establish there.
I think some ppl will hate they whole "we colonize alot of planets to quick".
I would be perfectly okay with a different plot in each game... But I'd love for it to follow the same protagonist and characters over a trilogy, there's more time to connect with and develop them. Mass Effect's characters will always be more memorable to me than Dragon Age's for that reason.
So instead of following one big bad over the course of three games and having it at such a large scale, tone it down and make the story more personal so carrying over choices doesn't negatively impact the plot as much. The decisions that do carry over are the ones that have always mattered the most: Those that effect our character.
If it wasn't a trilogy that let you carry your decisions from the same character to the next instalment and so on, it wouldn't be a Mass Effect game, is the only game that i have seen that does this (same character) and thanks bioware for that.

3 separate adventures in the Andromeda galaxy, linked together by our choices, same protagonist and a growing crew. That. Would. Be. Perfect.
I like the DA series well enough but the only game I "loved" was Origins. The Mass Effect trilogy had that "we're in this together" feel that DA2 and DAI just didn't have for me. It was hard to grow an attachment to a group of people that for the most part hated each other (DA2) or were OK with each other but mostly kept to themselves or their own groups (DAI).
Mass Effect on the other hand, allowed you to watch your crew members grow, change and become your family over a span of three games. Take Wrex for example;
ME1: I might just be starting to like you Shepard
ME2: Shepard! *pushes Krogan aside* Shepard. My friend.
ME3: Wait! I want you to know that no matter what happens...you've been a champion to the krogan people, a friend of Clan Urdnot...and a sister to me.
The DA series, no matter how amazing they make their stand alone games, can never give me moments like this simply because we can never meet the characters again as our previous protagonist. Just when the team members earn your trust and friendship you have to say goodbye. I really hope they return to the trilogy formula, it's what made Mass Effect so special for me.
I'm hoping for another trilogy, where we can grow attached to our protagonist over multiple game. Grow attached to the same individual characters over multiple games. It's one of the things I think Mass Effect does better over Dragon Age. I don't feel attached to any of the three protagonists in Dragon Age, whereas I do with my Shepard. I don't feel as big a connection with the companions of Dragon Age, as I do with the companions of Mass Effect.
Pretty much this yup
