I am curious as to what makes a biotic become either a Vanguard or an Adept other than different biotic implants and different skillsets?

Do Vanguards need to have greater body strength ? Because if that's the case then having Drell Vanguard, Volus Vanguard and Asari Vanguard would not be in the game.  I mean Drells are dexterous and fast, Asari are biotically powerful but they don't have pure strength. Then we have the Volus who are not strong, not dexterous, not fast and not biotically powerful.

Or does being a Vanguard mean that the biotic simply knows how to fight like a fighter ? If that's the case, then Adept should not be able to equip shotguns and engage in close quarters combat but they can. N7 Fury anyone ?

So is there anything else that differentiates a Vanguard over an Adept other than their skillsets and different biotic implants ? Is there any other differentiating criteria ?

I guess it is simply a question of one's mindset. Do I want to fight in the front lines or hang back and provide support to the others? The first one is a vanguard, who use they biotic powers agressively, and the second one is an adept who specializes mainly in debuffing the enemy and crowd control. This does not exclude weapon training either.

In short: vanguard abilites tend to do damage (raw damage or combo detonation), while adepts are the ones who set up the targets for vanguards (combo primers, crowd control to slow them/keep them clustered etc). Of course, there are some overlaping features of both sides, but most of these come from gameplay reasons. The differnce between these classes is much more easier to see in singleplayer though.

I'd say Adepts are all about crowd control/disabling and Vangs focus on pure close-range damage.

The differences are probably the same as the differences between Army and Marine. A lot of similar over lap but at least according to my brother who was in the Marines. They tend to be a lot more offensively focused while Army is offensive and support focused.

From a lore perspective: there is no "Adept" or "Vanguard", there is only "biotic".

From a gameplay perspective:

  • In ME1, Adept was geared towards being the biotic specialist, able to use all biotic abilities in the game. Vanguard was a combat-biotic hybrid, possessing some of the game's biotic abilities and some combat abilities and weapons.
  • In ME2 and extended ME3, the Adept was still a biotic specialist, but focused more on disabling enemies with powers, and killing/damaging enemies with biotic combos. Likewise, the Vanguard became more of a close-quarters combat (CQC) specialist, designed to rush into effective shotgun range and deal high burst damage. The Vanguard became more of a high-risk high-reward class... which was lessened with the introduction of Nova in ME3 with its invincibility frames, pretty much removing all the risk.

From a game design standpoint, Vanguards are designed to work around biotic charge (or Poison Strike in the case of the Turian Cabal Vanguard), with their other powers designed to be used in limited support. Adepts were more designed around disabling enemies and biotic combos.

Actually, there is a difference in lore. "Adept" and "Vanguard" are Alliance military classifications, military occupational specialties for biotic personnel.

As for what makes a person one or the other? The same thing that makes someone enlisting in the Army particularly well suited to be a mechanic, or a drone operator, or a radio operator, or a line infantryman, or a tank driver, or a tank gunner.

Aptitudes vary from individual to individual. Some people pick up different skills faster, some have a talent for a specific biotic power, some have the temperament to master one skillset over another. And where none of those apply, the needs of the service come into play.
