Delaying the IFF installation as much as I can

Hi.

I want to make a ME2 playthrough with Legion in the maximum missions I can but without sacrificing Normandy's crew.

In the Mass Effect Wiki they state that if I left missions uncompleted, the IFF installation would occur only after I did that missions.

What would happen if I do something like this:

  1. Complete the first 4 recruitment missions (Mordin, Garrus, Grunt, Jack)
  2. Go to Horizon
  3. Complete the 5 mission run before Collector Ship
  4. Complete Collector Ship
  5. Goes to Derelict Reaper

This is the fastest way to to recruit Legion without modding a save game (I'm a PS3 gamer).

This would leave a lot of missions to be done (Recruitments, Loyalty, N7 side quests and DLC)

The IFF installation would only occur when I would finish all those mission? Or it would happen sooner?

I've tried to search for this particular answer in the forum but I couldn't find it.

Thanks for your attention,

I'm assuming you know the main story already, so *SPOILER WARNING* just in case.

When the IFF is installed, the next big event is the Collectors kidnapping your crew.
I don't know precisely when it happens, but the big indicator is when EDI says something along the lines of "the ship will need to remain on low power for the installation and testing", and then Shepard states that they'll use the shuttle.
Then there should be a cutscene of Shepard and crew boarding the shuttle and taking off.
The next cutscene is of Joker and EDI discussing the progress of the IFF, they discover it's transmitting the Normandy's location, Collectors board the ship, crew gets abducted, Joker and EDI space the invaders, and only Joker and EDI remain when Shepard and crew return.

After the cutscene/dialogue, you will have time to do exactly ONE mission without any crew perishing.

To clarify, your entire crew is abducted, but all are still alive.  You do one mission, and your entire crew is still alive.
However, if you do more than one, crew members die, and the more missions you do after IFF installation and before storming the Collector Base, the more crew members perish, to the point that they could all be dead before you even arrive.

The "ideal" way to make this work is to put off the Derelict Reaper mission as much as you can, only doing recruitment and loyalty missions until your entire crew (as far as you can go) is on board and loyal.

Then do the Derelict Reaper mission, get Legion, talk to him to get his loyalty mission, and then do his loyalty mission.

The cutscene/Collector invasion should happen, then your ONE mission should be Legion's loyalty mission, and then it's off to the Collector Base.

Beat that mission to finish the main story, and then you can do things like Lair of the Shadow Broker and Arrival.

-------------

Long story short...

You don't get Legion until you complete the Derelict Reaper mission; and once you do that, the IFF is installed, Collectors invade, and the crew is abducted.

Funny story though, Legion was meant to be recruit-able mid-game.  It was changed because it could interfere with the main plot, (i.e. someone recruits Legion right from the start, and now your crew is gone and all you have is Shepard at level 3 with a Predator pistol.)

Not fun.

If you edit the save to give yourself Legion early, he has fully-fledged dialogue in missions where it would be impossible to have him in the squad, since you haven't done the Derelict Reaper yet.

I know this is a long response, but I figured you should know what's what and why it is the way it is.

I wish I had better news for you, but what you're asking for is not possible.

To get Legion "early", you have to edit the save.
If you get him "normally" and do more than his loyalty mission, your crew will die; and the only way to "fix" that is to edit the save after beating the main story.

-------------

Put simply:

Maximum missions with Legion without save editing AND without sacrificing crew:

One (1)

Not so. Maximum missions with Legion before kidnapping = 2.

How do you get two missions? By leaving at least one loyalty mission undone before getting the IFF. If there is a non-Legion loyalty mission active when you pick up Legion, then you will have to do one mission before getting Legion's loyalty mission, which would then be your second mission before the kidnapping.

Using this method is the way to bring Legion to Tali's trial without losing the crew:

1) Do all loyalty missions except Tali's

2) Get IFF and activate Legion

3) Do Tali's loyalty mission, bring Legion

4) Get Legion's loyalty mission and do it.

5) Kidnapping occurs.

In one of my playthroughs, I was able to complete 3 missions before the collectors boarded the Normandy. I don't recall how that happened since it has never happened since, but it usually is 2 missions before the kidnapping.

If you want Legion on the most missions, have only 8 squadmates and recruit no more. Of course having the geth renamed Legion make is nine. I would avoid recruiting Thane and Samara and Tali,

Complete Miranda, Zaeed, Mordin, Kasumi,Jack and Miranda's loyalty missions before starting the IFF mission. Do not complete any side missions. Do not complete any dlc's

After the mission, take Legion to recruit Tali. Once back on the ship talk to Tali right away to get the shield upgrade for the ship. When talking with Legion, if it doesn't offer it loyalty mission, complete Jacob's loyalty mission. Take Legion on the mission.

Once that is done, its time to go through the relay.

Hopefully you have all upgrades to the ship. Just a reminder. Once Mordin is on the ship, talk to Jacob right waway to get the armor upgrade. ONce Garrus is on the ship, talk to him right away to get the thannix cannon upgrade. As I mentioned above, once Tali is on the ship, talk to her right away to get the shield upgrade

Have Miranda for both fireteams. Kasumi sent in the vent. Mording sent back with the crew. Jack does the barrier. At that point everyone should be alive.

Take Kasumi and Jack to fight the 3-eyed thing.

Miranda(2), Garrus(3), Grunt(3), Tali(0), Zaeed(4), Jacob will either be 1 or 2 if the loyalty mission was completed. The same with Legion. For a total of 15. Everyone should survive.

Once the suicide mission is completed, take Legion on all the remaining missions left. Take it on all dlc's. All side missions. All remaining loyalty missions. Take it to recruit Samara and Thane.

I have never done what I posted above. Try it and see if that will work for you

My idea in this playthrough is to be a Drone Master Engineer, like the one suggested by RedCaesar97:

For ME2

  • Engineer focusing on Combat Drone
  • Squadmates focusing on Combat Drone

So my ideal team would be Tali and Legion. I don't want Legion on my team because of the story (some other poster in other thread said it's not that rich, there's too few special interactions between NPCs because of Legion), but for Gameplay.

But I like to have all my upgrades when I go to Suicide Mission (what's the point to have an increase in Damage for my weapons if my most important mission is already done).

I'll be having the training in Shotgun, so my most important upgrades will be Heavy Weapons, Tech, Shotgun (for me and Tali), Shield, Heavy Pistol, Health Assault Rifle and Sniper Rifle (for Legion).

All loyalty mission I have to carry an specific Squadmate, so it would not matter to me if it's Tali or Legion following the other Squadmate. The only two loyalty missions that matters to have Legion on board is Tali's and Legion's.

There are DLC missions that you can't bring any Squadmates (Arrival) or you can bring only one (Kasumi and most of Lair of Shadow Broker).

So, my plan will be something like that:

  • Freedom Progress
  • Mordin recruitment
  • Kasumi Loyalty (to get Locust) (only one Squadmate, doesn't matter if Tali and Legion are not in the team).
  • All non combat assignments/missions I could get, in a way that I could leave 4 non combat missions for after Horizon.
  • Garrus, Grunt and Jack recruitment
  • Horizon
  • 4 non combat missions
  • Tali Recruitment to get Tali as soon as possible.
  • Collector Ship to get the Shotgun as soon as possible
  • Don't do Thane's recruitment: -10% of SMG damage (will not use) and -10% of Heavy Pistol damage
  • Don't do Samara's recruitment: -10% of Biotic damage (will not use), will not have Scimitar (won't use. I will use Geth Shotgun), -10% Assault Rifle damage
  • Arrival (don't have squadmates, doesn't matter if Legion is not recruited)
  • Lair of Shadow Broker (2/3 of this mission Liara is a mandatory squadmate, so it won't matter much if Legion is not a squadmate).
  • All loyalties except Tali's (an specific squadmate is necessary, so bringing Tali along won't matter if Legion is not a squadmate).
  • Don't do Overlord: -10% Health
  • Do all N7 combat assignments/missions that will give you upgrades
  • Do all non combat N7 assignments/missions (won't matter if Legion is not a squadmate) (only if I'm not yet at level 30 or if I need money).
  • Derelict Reaper.
  • Activate Legion, get Legion Loyalty mission.
  • Two missions before IFF get ready and crew gets kidnapped:
    • Tali Loyalty.
    • Legion Loyalty
  • Crew gets kidnapped
  • Go to Omega 4 Relay
  • Brings Tali and Legion as squadmates during the whole mission.
  • Use Kasumi as Tech Expert
  • Use Jack as Biotic Expert
  • Do Samara's and Thane's recruitment and loyalty.
  • Overlord
  • Do all remaining combat N7 assignments.
