I love you DA:I, but your music could learn from DA:O

Music related question; who do we think the "Empress of Fire" mentioned in that song's lyrics is? The lyrics say she eclipses Orlais. I'm thinking either 1) Andraste, or 2) a high dragon.

It's Empress Celene. Her crest is the Lion which is mentioned in the song, and she is associated with fire, as she torched the alianages, and has special rings with fire magic or something similar. Can't remember exactly how it worked, but she's definitely associated with fire in some way.

The tune without lyrics is also played at the ball, because it's basically the Orlesian anthem.

DAI's main theme is very catchy, but the rest I don't even remember or even noticed! DAO's music is just heavenly,I totally agree!

DA:O music was suitable for its settings. but for future titles I don't mind if they learnt from jade empire - moreover if the next sequel will be in the Imperium I wouldn't mind some heavy war chants.

I completely agree with the OP. IMO not only was the music in DA:I too generic but it was poorly utilized. When I think of the music of DA:O I can hum or sing the songs but when I think of the music of DA:I I can't even remember it. When I try I start singing Edge of Night from Lord of the Rings because the menu screen sounds like that song. The only other one I recognize is the one that plays in Val Royeaux (but is apparently not supposed to?). I also hated the idea of instead of persistent ambient music there were 10-20 second blurbs every so often. Why even play anything if you're just going to do that? (I eventually ended up playing Skyrim's soundtrack in the background while adventuring because I hated the lack of music so much) Just one more thing that made me feel like I was the only beta tester in an MMO. The bard songs were a cool idea but sadly restricted to one location and not integrated into the story.

There is indeed a Dragon Age soundtrack that's a blatant rip-off of Lord of the Rings, but it isn't Inquisition!

DAI's soundtrack was one of it's greatest strengths. I'll stick with that.

Inquisition had a soundtrack?

When you actually download the sountrack and listen to it, it's great. I like the Battle for Haven theme, I love (I mean, am OBSESSED with) the Dark Solas/Lost Elf themes, and the qunari themes from Trespasser, and Descent.

But.... :/ you couldn't hear them in the game. They rarely trigerred, were poorly utilized, did not have optimal decibels hitting the right moments during gameplay, and somehow did not provide an immersive experience.

So yes, the music was excellent but programmed poorly in the game, and there probably was not sufficient atmospheric music or background tracks to cover the HUGE expanse of the game. The small, imperceptible bells and strings tingling in the background for the Hinterlands was quite lackluster. Then you heard some generic stuff for the apostate vs. templar war region. But then... nothing in between, especially after defeating the mages and templars there. Storm Coast.... nothing.

So I don't know if people actually spent the amount of time I did exploring, or if people just don't immerse themselves in games like I do, but yeah... as the composer for Inquisition I'd be irritated for sure that they didn't code it properly to trigger often enough or didn't give me the proper prompts in order to fill out all the empty space.

Actually, I whole heartily agree with this. I am currently playing a new playthrough of DA:I. What I realized is that the music is really that bad, its actually quite good, but I think its biggest problem is that there just isn't enough variety though that might be the cause in part that I have only completed the main story line once, not of the DLC and I have almost 410 hours logged for Inquisition. I think the music fits the ambiance of the game quite well, but its just not quite as, for lack of a better term, epic sounding like DA:O music is. I mean in DA:O I know exactly where I am just based on the music alone, and while I kinda get that with DA:I, it just doesn't quite hit home the same way.

Balderdash. DAI's music karate chops DAO's music in the face.

DA:O had the tavern music (the normal and the combat one) and Ferelden at War. <3

I can only remember two pieces of music from DA:I. The main theme, and "finding Skyhold".

Excluding bard songs.

Some of Zur's work in Origins really did seem reminiscent of Howard Shore's score for the LOTR trilogy, especially the bits that used a lot of vocal work.

This is probably because they got a new composer for DAI. Inon Zur was the lead composer for DAO and DA2, whereas Trevor Morris succeeded him for DAI.

I was actually a little worried about this when I saw this before DAI came out, and felt sadly vindicated afterwards. I kind of agree with the OP that DAI lacked the "OOMPH!" that DAO had. Apart from the  SAD MUSIC of Alexius' Bad Future and Dorian's personal quest, and the music that plays when everyone first discovers Skyhold, I thought it was just eh. Okay, but not too evocative or memorable.

THAT SAID, I think Morris really upped his game for the Trespasser DLC. I thought THAT music was consistently very powerful, passionate, and evocative. I feel like the music aided the tone of Trespasser--the feeling of urgency and danger the DLC story showed ("OMG, we're being attacked by psycho Qunari!" "OMG, my mark is KILLING ME!", "OMG, we HAVE to beat the clock before it's too late!"), but could also be really sad and wistful when it needed to be, especially when the Inquisitor confronts Solas. I thought that was so masterfully handled.

If the music of the next game is like the music of Trespasser (or, for whatever reason they rehire Inon Zur), I'll be happy.

Trespasser and Descent had amazing tracks! Especially the final battle in Trespasser! Reminded me of the Suicide Mission music in ME.

I wont tell which is better than the other, but the only musics in DA:I that I liked are the one when we fight the pride demon in the prologue, the music during the battle of Haven and the battle music in Descent when fighting the darkspawns.

What I dislike in Inquisition though is that during the majority of the game there is no ambient music in the background, only in some areas or moments but no music when you're exploring and doing stuff, that was a big disappointement.

I honestly can't even remember the soundtrack for Awakening. I could've sworn it's just bits and pieces from Origins proper along with maybe something out of one of the other DLC's.

I wish they had reworked the DAO theme like they did for DA2. Keeping some of Zur's leitmotifs would have been pretty cool, such as the Darkspawn, Elves, and Dwarves.

The music was very good in DAI, but they overused pieces of "The Dawn Will Come" way too much. Same with the Orlais theme to a lesser extent.

Now, the bard songs were damn amazing

One of the many amazing things about DA:I is the score. It immense. This is the first time that I downloaded the score so that I could play it while I'm not playing the game.

Yes, it seems everywhere you go you're bound to hear a rendition of "The Dawn Will Come". I have nothing against the song actually, and when everyone sings it, its actually pretty epic and I loved that part of the game. I just don't like hearing the same music all the time.

Someone mentioned Inon Zur. I still have the BG2 soundtrack on my mobile. Really loving the soundtrack honestly.
