Time for something silly. Here are some questions for any HP fans,

What Hogwarts House would you be in?

What would your Patronus take the shape of?

What would Olivander's description of your wand sound like?

What would an amortensia potion smell like to you?

(A love potion in the HP universe smells differently to each individual. i.e. To Hermione, it smelled like fresh cut grass, new parchment, and spearmint toothpaste.)

Mine:

House: Ravenclaw

Patronus: House cat (Turkish Angora)

Wand: Willow, core of unicorn hair (though I'd prefer pegasus/winged horse's feather), supple.

Amortensia: Jasmine, rain, fresh baked sourdough bread.

Has anyone ever taken the Pottermore quiz?  It was written by Rowling and it's supposed to be the closest that you can get to the actual sorting.

I, naturally, assumed that I'd be a Ravenclaw.  I'm terribly clever (and modest!) and I'm a total academic.  And, when I take most 'sorting' quizzes, I pretty much always get Ravenclaw.

So imagine my surprise when I take the Pottermore quiz and I get Gryffindor.  I actually took it two more times (with different email addresses) and got Gryffindor each time.  None too pleased until I remembered that Hermione was a Gryffindor and she was the most clever witch in her grade.  I mean, I guess I am awfully brave, courageous, chivalrous, daring and bold (and still modest!) too.

It also gives you your wand.  Apparently mine would be black walnut wood with a dragon heartstring core, 12 1/2" and hard flexibility.  Black walnut is 'a handsome wood', but difficult to work with because it becomes unreliable if the user is relying on any self-deception.  But if you are true to yourself, it's one of the "most loyal and impressive wands".  And it's particularly good for charmwork.

I have no idea what my patronus would be.  Nor what the amortensia would smell like for me.  I need J.K. to create a quiz for those too!

I took the quiz, and I'm not that surprised I got Hufflepuff. I do put kindness and loyalty above all else, so I'm happy with the result. Less happy about the way you enter their common room though. Crawling in small spaces is something I would rather avoid, thanks.

My wand would be Ash ("The ideal owner may be stubborn, and will certainly be courageous, but never crass or arrogant."), Phoenix feather core ("capable of the greatest range of magic, hardest to tame and to personalise, and their allegiance is usually hard won"), 10 ¾, Slightly Yielding.

My patronus would be a wolf, partially because I find them magnificent, and also, because they fit someone from Hufflepuff (avoid conflict, but protect their own if they have to, loyal to their pack).

I'm not sure about Amortensia. Probably the smell of a forest near a sea.

I made my husband take the quiz too.  He's not much of a HP fan, but he's watched the movies.  He got Slytherin and was really pissed because he, as a casual fan, thought that they were just 'the bad guys'.  I then pointed out the Slytherin characteristics (cunning, ambitious, creative, resourceful) and he agreed that this pretty much summed him up well.  A Gryffindor and a Slytherin......

House: While internet quizzes have always resulted in either Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, I think I'd definitely be in Gryffindor. Buuuut it's not like I've seriously contemplated this question for almost two decades now or anything...

Patronus: Hmm, an owl or a crow, or even my old dog who passed away. Or maybe an octopus. I like the image of an octopus charging through the air towards a Dementor.

Wand: Supple cherry wood with a phoenix feather core. ~10 inches. It'd have a simple and practical design, nothing like the ones from the movies.

Amortensia potion: Fresh laundry, crisp weather, and the scent of, er, a certain someone's hair.

I hadn't taken the Pottermore quiz and guessed, and I guessed right: Slytherin

This is the wand they gave me, though I would have chosen Rosewood:

Maple wood with a dragon heartstring core, 12 ½" and surprisingly swishy flexibility

I have to walk the dogs, so I'll think about my patronus and potion whilst I'm out wandering around.

***

Alright, back from the arctic cold. It's difficult for me to envision what my Patronus would be. My happiest memories revolve around loved ones and traveling to meet loved ones and also seeing beautiful artworks and places that I've dreamed about. Perhaps my Patronus would be a crow, because they have strong social bonds with their loved ones, they're curious, intelligent and playful, and they collect shiny things.

My amortensia potion would smell like wet stone after a thunderstorm, applewood smoke, moondust, blackberry juice, Thai basil, and purple lilac.

Hey according to the internet that's the most popular pairing ;)

Amusingly, one of the first articles I got after getting sorted was "why you should want to date a Hufflepuff."

I have a certain enmity for Harry Potter but sure. I didn't take any quiz though.

House: Ravenclaw, though I'm entirely biased by the name.

Patronus: A falcon.

Wand: Yew and phoneix feather. Temperamental.

Amortensia: Coffee and storms, with a hint of hazelnuts.

I'll take the pottermore quiz, then, and see if I'm the anything like the kind of witch I think I am.

A Gryffindor and a Slytherin......

OTP.  ^_^

Is it the quidditch? The excessive latin?

I hope it's not the names...I love the names. Luna Lovegood. Godric Gryffindor. Mundungus Fletcher. Sirius Black.

I don't like the world and I find the main characters kind of annoying.

Mortal Engines was more my thing.

Can someone post this specific quiz? I don´t seem to be able to find one with such results.

You either register on pottermore.com or if you don't want an account, here's the house quiz http://www.gotoquiz....ssible_question

The wand quiz is only on the official website, though.

(small tip: 10minutemail is fantastic when you need email for registration, but don't want to dirty up yours with spam)

Or you can just make it up!

I don't like the world and I find the main characters kind of annoying.

I was thinking about this yesterday during my walk and concluded that the things I find annoying about Harry Potter are most likely the elements that make it a childrens' series.

I just finished Uprooted and love it so much more, but the protagonist is a female adult and the conflicts felt more dangerous and scary and complicated. And while I like many of the other Potter characters, I wanted to smack Harry most of the way through. He kept reminding me of my friend's son, the one I had to try hard to like, the one who had to touch everything in my house and sit too close to me.

I just wish there were a wider variety of known wand cores. I like unicorn hair pretty well, but it's strange that it's one of the less powerful wand hearts.

Winged horses are a thing in the HP world, so I like to think that their feathers would work.

I wonder if the thing that was celebrated for the series is what makes you annoyed - a huge selling point and what made the books special to many was that they matured with the reader. The joyful and somewhat naive outlook of the first book is gone in the last one.

I will have to reread the books. Partially because I want to see how they stack up to the translation I read as a kid, but also because I want to see how much I will enjoy it as an adult.

The interesting aspect to this is that my son matured with the books, but by the time the final ones came out, he was over Harry Potter, and I read them myself just to complete the series. There are plenty of things I like about the stories, but they are far from my favorite works of fantasy, let's put it that way.

I think I was lucky to be at the exact right age for it. Plus the translated versions had only an 8 year gap between the first and the last book, versus 10 for the original. I don't usually rank books, but these were some of the few I physically couldn't put down once I started reading. Simpler times, I guess.

I was the right age for, and while I was drawn in at first I lost interest over time. I think I largely didn't want to read about a bunch of people roughly my age going to school.

It seems I am in the house Slytherin by 89%. Now I just need to find out what that house is.

I never really cared about Harry Potter for the precise reason of the book series having too many features of childrens series. And I didn´t like the chosen one theme on Harry himself. Granted I never read any of the books, I just saw the first movie and that was it, I knew I would not care about the books either.

Found it. So that is the house, kind of fitting.

House: Ravenclaw 5lyfe! No matter what, I always end up in Ravenclaw.

Wand: English oak, dragon heartstring 13", unbending flexibility

Patronus: Something with wings like an eagle or a hawk.

Potion: The smell of a pumpkin when you cut into it, bacon, rain, new book, cinnamon rolls cooking in the oven, chocolate and peanut butter....

And now I'm hungry.
