Anyone used something like Campaign Cartographer 3 for World Map Making?

I'm taking a serious look at buying this: Campaign Cartographer 3

I really need a specialized map of the Western Heartlands. The default maps don't work for the World Map because the areas of interest are too small for the World Map Icons (example: Trying to fit three city icons near the small dot for "Scornubel" just doesn't work). I really need a custom map where I can mess with the dimensions of certain geographical areas. Like, I have no real need for The High Moor to take up 1/6th of my map. I don't mean to make it disappear, but only to shrink it's size with relation to the surrounding areas.

Curious if anyone has used a program like this to make maps before. The $45 pricetag seems okay. Might be worth it.

There are so many maps of regions of Faerun online, I'd be surprised if you couldn't find one of the right size to use.

Also, if you already have Civilization, you can lay out maps in that and then take a screenshot to use as your map. I know that's been done to produce game maps for modules.

I've been using CC since v2 and have had v3 for a number of years.  I made THIS with v3.  I was just learning the tool and believe me it's a bit of a learning curve.  I even bought their book on mapping.  It weighs in at 512 pages - I just took a pic of it HERE.  It's a great tool but it's a lot of work to learn it.

I've used it as well. It's good for certain styles of map making, but as MarshallV says you'll need to spend time getting proficient at it. If you're only going to use it for one or two maps, the return on investment might not be worth it.

It could be done with Paint.NET, yes.  There are many tutorials online on making antique-looking maps in Photoshop which could also be done in Gimp or Paint.NET.

How about knocking up an Storm of Zehir style overland map and just taking a screenshot of it? The map wouldn't need to be particularly detailed since it's only purpose is to have a screenshot of it, and you wouldn't have to add the triggers and scripts and other stuff an actual OM needs.

That's an idea certainly worth trying Kamal. I may have to give that a try.

I did take a stock map of the Western Heartlands and edit it with Photoshop. It's okay. I'm not real high on it though. I don't feel like it looks very "polished."

I saw this map in the Campaign Cartographer 3 gallery and that's what made me think about using that. I really liked that map and the colors they used.

I'll dig around for some tutorials online. I'm not opposed to spending the money on the CC3 program or dealing with the learning curve. I just want to make a map that I like to look at for this, that has the geography laid out in a way that allows the world map icons to be used.

I have a couple of maps in my mod that I made using CC2. They are old now, but I kept them in for nostalgia. ;)
