RedCaesar and Cap & Gown, thanks.  Will finish up ME1 playthrough then decide if I'm keeping Vanguard or going Engineer.  I'm a little worried about Vanguard on Hardcore with the Biotic Rush talent.  If I charge into a group of enemies, then I'm exposed and defenseless right?  I'm gonna do Hardcore on ME2.

By the way, I noticed Liara is WORTHLESS against aerial machines.  I did the Rogue VI mission and mistakenly brought her and Garrus.  Had to get Tali instead, much better.  Tali seems pretty useful with AI Hacking.  But, should you only bring her on missons with Geth or machines? Just got to Noveria.

Engineer is pretty lackluster when compared to adept in first game. I really liked it in second game, despite the routine being pretty boring... does it have shields? Overload! Armor? Incinerate!

Repeat ad nauseaum. Throw the drone out to distract the enemies and get them off your back when needed. Despite that... I just liked the playstyle. It just felt good and right. And what with all the hacking and technology gigs needed, engineer felt like the best choice, from lore perspective.

But in the third game... boy, does engie ever shine. You can play her as an tech wizard, doing all sort of tech combos and that is much fun to be had.

But what I found ever more fun, is to play as battle engineer. Develop all your powers for maximum range, give her Inferno grenades as bonus power and Claymore and let her off the chain and watch the hell following her.

Quite literally, since fire explosions follow each other approximately five seconds apart, or so, in multiple succession.

1. For help with Biotic Charge in ME2, this video may help:

Mass Effect 2: Vanguard Charging 101 (Insanity Guide) by ThatAverageGatsby.

Also, Mass Effect 2: Beginner's Vanguard Tutorial video series by sinosleep. Volume 1 starts here. (There is no thread or playlist for it, sorry. Start at volume 1, Volumes 2 through 7 should be included with the suggested videos on YouTube.)

2. Rogue VI mission is the only mission where biotics are useless. Biotics are useful in every other mission.

ty RedCaesar and Mordokai! Right now I'm trying out Liara and Garrus (I like your idea of control with the biotics.)  I assume Kaidan is better for even more control, as you mentioned. I have the problem only having enough "good" gear for certain characters.

How BAD is it if you dont have someone to open boxes and crates?  Are you missing out on a lot of good stuff? Does bug me how the first game limits u to having to have 1 of 3 characters always for that.  I know they fixed that in 2.

If you do not have someone to open crates and boxes:

  • You miss out the chance you will get some good equipment, or at least equipment that is better than what you currently have equipped
  • You miss obtaining equipment you can sell for credits so you can buy better equipment from shops

That's about it.

On a first playthrough, you generally would want to open everything. On NG+ (new game with an imported character) this tends to not matter as much since you would typically have great equipment or the best equipment already.

Why not infiltrator or soldier? In my opinion the infiltrator is the most fun to use, but the soldier is a tank for higher difficulties. As you already did a bionics class, do one of the other primary classes.

thanks guys for all the input.  I'm enjoying using Barrier and such to get out in the middle of things in ME1.  I'm on Virmire now and about to hit the home stretch.  Few more questions:

1) Does anyone besides Garrus, Wrex and Tali have special quests in ME1? Can't seem to unlock one for Kaidan or Ash or Liara yet.

2) I pretty much did all the side quests except for the Turian signet rings and Matriarch's recordings.  I'm trying to do everything that has a bearing in some way on ME2/ME3.  I finished all the other UNC missions (just did Geth Incurision - hard!)

3) Do you guys prefer to do Bring Down the Sky BEFORE or AFTER the ME1 ending stuff? I'm leaning towards before.

4) Lastly, I'm really looking forward to ME2 for many reasons.  But, I'm a bit worried about ME3.  I only played it once when it was released.  Yes, there's a bit of the ending stuff, but, for some reason I didn't connect with that game as well.  Have any of you guys re-played ME3 and felt better about it the second time or more? I'd like to enjoy it more if I can.

thanks! :)

1.  There are no special quests for Ashley or Kaidan or Liara, although Noveria could almost qualify as Liara's (if you recruit her before doing it).

2)  There is a War Asset in ME3 (worth only 5) that is dependent on the Matriarch's recordings, so you'll want to finish them off (I think you need 10 of the 16 available).

3)  Do BDTS before the ME1 ending... As I recall, you don't get to go back in and finish things off the same way you can in ME2 and completing BDTS does trigger an extra little quest on the Citadel in ME3.

4)  Personally, I enjoy ME3, ending and all.  Have played through it a few times now with different Shepard profiles.  I like not having to worry so much about what actions were paragon or renegade as in ME2, since more of the options actually only yield the generic reputation points.  Any of the pertinent options available to Shepard depend more on his actual decisions (both past and current) and whether enough of the tasks/conversations to that point have been completed to have a high enough general reputation.  So, to connect best with ME3... really concentrate on getting to know what makes your Shepard tick in ME2 (not just whether he's renegade or paragon) but build him with some real beliefs and values... What sort of government does he believe in - democratic, dictatorial, anarchistic?  Is he human centric or not... or perhaps just a little bit?  How does he feel deep down about technology... is it a tool or something more and should that be controlled or set free (reflected in how he goes about "fathering" EDI)?  Does he believe that societies are built during times of peaceful cooperation (asari) or during the struggles of war (krogan)?  Is he the sort of soldier who follows orders (Hacket - "Dead reapers are how we win this) or rebels against them (Starchild about TIM not being able to seize control because the Reapers already controlled him)?  The ending in ME3 can actually come down to an expression of what your Shepard believes in.

Thanks for the detailed replay UpUp!

I wonder if my apprehension about ME3 is because I know it's the end.  At least with ME2 I can relax because I know I've got one more to go.

I'm hopeful to have a better time the second pass.  I did Synthesis before (was confusing - seemed like that was the "best" choice with full Paragon) - but I guess Destroy also would work - might try that.  Thanks for your thought provoking questions.

But, will be a while till I get there haha! :)

Odd that Liara didn't get her own quest in the first game (well, recruiting her I guess could be considered hers.)
