Corpse heart?

I decided to side with the mages so naturally, I will be fighting the Red Templars at Haven after closing the breach.

I found the cleansing rune schematic in Fallow Mire. It would be a good rune to have against the Red Templars.  But it requires "corpse hearts."  Where do I find those?  I killed dozens of undead in Fallow Mire but no corpse hearts dropped.  I got one heart to drop when clearing out  one of the rooms in the forbidden oasis.  Unfortunately, I've used up all the shards you can get prior to Haven.

So, is there any other location you can get corpse hearts prior to Haven?

As far as I know you can only get corpse hearts from killing the undead, and since you will find most of them in the Fallow Mire I think my best advice is to go back there. If you stand in the water there will be a never-ending supply of undead. Most of the other places with lots of undead can only be accessed after the battle of Haven. I don't think it's possible to buy the material anywhere.

Perhaps not what you wanted to hear, but I hope it helps! :)

You can't make a rune in Haven. You need a blank runestone on top of those corpse hearts and you can only buy them in skyhold.

Or is there a seller somewhere earlier that I don't know about?

Have you tried Val Rioyoux? I swear there was a shop that early on that sells them.

The corpses in the Fallow Mire might not drop them to prevent a player from farming them like crazy. You'd have better luck with corpses guarding the Forbidden Oasis.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. The Red Templars are still pretty weak at this stage.

After my last post I remembered that you can't even craft your own runes until you reach Skyhold, so I guess this discussion is a bit redundant. ;)

Actually, you can craft runes prior to the Battle of Haven!  After completing "In Hushed Whispers" or "Champions of the Just" (i.e. choosing the mages or templars), a new shop opens up in Val Royeaux with a dwarf proprietor named Havel.  He sells the blank runestones.  Prior to the Battle of Haven, you should be able to locate the base Fire, Frost, Lightning, and Cleansing rune schematics.  Locating crafting materials for the frost and fire runes is easy, open up the appropriate doors at the forbidden oasis and farm fire and frost essence.  I'm not sure where lightning essence comes from.

For me, half the fun of DAI is preparing for the various big battles by crafting the best armor and equipment you can find.  Prior to the Battle of Haven, two things which you can do to give your stuff an added punch is to locate Tier 2 crafting materials, particularly metals, and craft some basic runes.

Are you sure that you can actually craft runes in Haven though? I know you can get the material, but I believe runecrafting is not possible until you get Dagna to join you at Skyhold. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Yes!  Right after choosing to side with the mages or Templars, go to Val Royeaux to the shop with the lady in it.  There's now a shop opened run by Havel, a dwarf.  It makes sense that a dwarf would be selling blank runes.  Also note that in Haven, at the weaponsmith, there's this tranquil that hangs out there who you can hear speak but you can't talk to.  I bet she's the one who makes the runes.

What Dagna adds is the extra "Masterworks" slot to the better schematics so you can use the collected fade-touched materials.

Alright, good to know for future play-throughs!  :)
