So I'm looking for a Mage to round out my party which consists of Iron Bull, and Sera. My inquisitior is a dual wield rogue that I will use as an assassin.

I'd go with Dorian. He has fun party banter with Sera and Bull.

Both are really good, depending on your preferences. Solas is probably a better support mage with his CC abilities and mana regeneration. Dorian can provide lots of DOT and panicking and can resurrect himself with Simulacrum (sometimes).

Generally, I'd say take which ever character you like the most for banter purposes. Dorian for sarcasm, and lots of fun with Iron Bull and Sera. Solas for being an egg, quite boring, and very much an egg. Vivienne for being an annoying cow and providing much satisfaction each time she gets knocked out. I'm slightly biased.

I'm not a huge fan of the egg, but he does drop some interesting lore from time to time, particularly in the JoH DLC, so there's always that to consider.

In terms of dialogue, Dorian provides a lot of humorous banter with Bull and Sera, whereas Solas provides more insight into the lore and settings (though Dorian can also be pretty knowledgeable and Solas can be pretty funny as well).

For combat abilities, your party seems pretty DPS-heavy so you'll want your mage to have more supportive/crowd control abilities. Both can do the job with right set-up (Static Cage, Ice mine, etc), but I find Solas's specialization more useful for debuffing enemies with weakness and gathering them together. Dorian just sorta makes them run around for a little while. And don't even get me started on his goddamn ghost pets.

If this is just about banter, take Dorian.

I did a playthrough with Cassandra, Dorian, and Solas, and Dorian was a complete wet noodle in banter, a complete waste of time. Maybe he's better with other team members (Bull and Sera mentioned earlier) but I wasn't a fan.

It's not based solely on banter I want somebody that can work orotund the team that I have built. So out of the two which can help add some defense?

Solas = better support (idk what it is but the way he does barriers is the best, always saving my ass.. :D), rift mage is great at CC..and if you're looking for a more intellectual/lore focused type of party banter he's defo the one to go for. I suggest you take him with you anyway in any "elf" related places, his dialogues are very interesting.

However, I think his banters work better with other more "intellectually deep" party members, such as Cassandra or Cole.. If you're sticking with Bull and Sera which are more of the easygoing type, maybe Dorian's sass is best for you.

However imho if you use Dorian I would disable Spirit Mark.. that skill annoys the hell out of me, when the enemies don't die and you have to wait for them to die to loot or sometimes it bugs things (like it bugged the door leading to Imshael in Emprise du Lion because the stupid red lyrium guy didn't die immediately and then when it died the door stayed closed and I had to reload.)

Or you can do like me.. I like them both so I just equip them both and usually swap them, use Solas for plot or elf places and Dorian for all the other farming or exploration areas :P

I see your point I may swap out sera for Varric and maybe that'll help the banter! Also I believe his specialization would fit best with the party.

Nonsense! Sera/IB/Solas has great banter. Sera is the best at deflating Solas's snobbery.

That said, Varric is good too, although Varric/Sera isn't as good as some other Varric pairings, like Varric/Cass or Varric/Cole, IMO.

Just go with Dorian. Sera/IB/Dorian is great for both banter and capability.

Overall, I greatly prefer Dorian as a character, but I prefer Solas' combat capabilities. Plus, as I take Sera everywhere as my go-to archer, I really enjoy listening to her anti-elfy banter and how it bounces against Solas, especially when it comes to the part about walking over dead elves lol. I also enjoy Solas' banter with Bull, since Solas has a lot to say about the Qun. Despite all this, my great love of Dorian's character compels me to take him along way more often than Solas.

I seem to understand the characters a lot more now!

I just dislike Sera, her banters are quite childish and bring nothing useful to the team. All she can do is whine about something or "avoid talking about serious things" by making silly noises with her mouth like "pfff" "prrr" and laughing like a child who doesn't want to face the truth. She has literally no arguments. She's just there to try to be funny (but fails at it imho).

But a lot of people like this aspect of her so.. While I do agree Solas has interesting banter with Bull about the Qun, I find nothing intellectually challenging about Solas/Sera banter.

She is a great archer, so if you really want her in the team and you want funny banters I'd go with Dorian..
Otherwise if all you want is a ranged and not necessarily a rogue you could even go with 2 mages and 1 warrior and bring both Dorian and Solas, that will definitely give you better banter and better dialogues in the main quests (mostly for Here lies the Abyss and What Pride had Wrought, absolutely I recommend you bring them both in these two. Vivienne is useless as she has barely any interesting dialogue there).

TL:DR Imho Sera is quite useless - If you don't care about ranged rogue bring Dorian AND Solas always with you in the party :P

(please Sera lovers don't mug me :P)

While I am not fond of the woman constantly demeaning  my other party members and the unfortunate, I must say that Viviene as a Knight-Enchanter is a juggernaut on the battlefield especially if you can get a  Sigil of Lyrium and the Andraste's Sacrifice amulet to compliment her fashionable arsenal.

I usually have Solas with me if I have too many humans in my party, although his specialty tree is not terribly utilitarian.

Hmmm, well, I don't usually pay too much attention to combos or effects or anything, since I play on normal without any trials on, but when I take Solas, Sera and Blackwall out, mobs seem to die pretty quickly. I make sure to have the highest tier weapons and armor I can on them, of course. I'll swap Iron Bull out for Blackwall occasionally for banter purposes, or dragon hunting. That's for my mage. When I'm running the rogue, her primary team after everyone is recruited, is either Blackwall, Iron Bull, Solas, or Blackwall, Dorian, Solas, because sometimes you just need more support on the back end, and that particular character doesn't get along with Sera, Viv or Varric, whereas the mage does.

I love having Cole for banter, but he's very squishy, so you have to really play around with customizing him for best effect, lots of guard on hit and any artifacts you can find to protect him. Cassandra is a beast, but I am not a fan of the Chantry, so some of her dialogue irks me.

If you're taking Ironbull and Sera, then Dorian hands down! B)   The banter is the big winner here.  If you take Solas, all you'll hear is bitter comments between Solas and the party.  Not enjoyable at all.  Solas is insightful, but for me, he's only bearable when I limit who else I bring.  Solas banter is nice along with Cassandra, Cole, and Blackwall.

Correct answer: Get all of them. Play characters, not combat. DO not stick to a partticular party all the time. Change them.

No mugging, but I do have to take exception to the idea she has no arguments with anyone. Sera/Dorian have an argument about mages. Yes, it does veer into vulgar comedy and if you aren't into that, I can understand your dislike, but it's still a valid argument that is consistent with her character.

I think you should try them both and reach your own conclusion about who you prefer on your team. Also that will give you a chance to get to get to know both of them.
