i'm trying that lately to get them to hook up but if they talk to each other it is not very nice what they say is it after a main quest or something because i really would like to hear that
If you are not locked into a romance, they are not going to hook up. So lock in with someone other than those two and then eventually it will happen. I find you get the banter sooner if you take them to the Frostback basin. But I've also had it happen while trekking about in other zones too.

Okay one more thing i do not have the DLC's are they going to hook up without the DLC's ? because if they don't then i don't have to try anymore
I like all three mage npcs a lot. Solas is fun with Sera, because they are so different and that leads some funny (and surprisingly insightful) banter between those two. Vivienne is fun with Blackwall and she has a lot to say about everything mage related. Dorian is just a nice and great character - he is just the nice guy, you like to be friends with.
Lorewise, they all bring something to the table: Solas about elves and fade, Vivienne about mages and nobility, Dorian about Tevinter, bloodmagic and cults. So it makes sense, to change the group from time to time - especially since they are all three very useful. I would generally advice to change the group from time to time, you miss great banter and some sidequests otherwise. Or you get the sidequests, but not the approval
But if it has to be either Solas or Dorian, I would take Dorian with IB and Sera.

Sigil of great bear plus amulet of renewal makes dorian one of the best crowd controllers if you spec him right. Horror, wall of flame, static cage, winters grasp, spirit mark. he constantly puts enemies in fear and keeps them still.

Generally, I'd say take which ever character you like the most for banter purposes. Dorian for sarcasm, and lots of fun with Iron Bull and Sera. Solas for being an egg, quite boring, and very much an egg. Vivienne for being an annoying cow and providing much satisfaction each time she gets knocked out. I'm slightly biased.
I'm not a huge fan of the egg, but he does drop some interesting lore from time to time, particularly in the JoH DLC, so there's always that to consider.
lol I adore Vivienne - she is elegant and fabulous.
From a combat perspective, I prefer Solas, but for party banter/fun it's Dorian. If I'm not playing as a mage myself, I bring the both of them out, as I prefer to have 2 mages in my party. Viv is only there on standby for when Solas leaves.
If you're going to have IB in your party, then I'd highly recommend Dorian. I'd also recommend going with an electromancer build, it's a personal favourite of mine when it comes to AI. Electromancer Dorian will dish out some considerable DPS, provide some crowd control via stun mechanics, and aside from the battle capabilities, if you're after humorous banter, then there's no one better.
I'd take them both because they have hilarious banter together *cough* apostate hobo *cough*.
