I had nearly forgotten about this mini-boss fight in Legacy but after the lore recounted in Descent and Trespasser, I'm wondering when this being first emerged in the past and how he is related to other ancient ones.

Known as either Malvernis or Amgeforn the Foul, or the Pestilent One.    It originally attacked the dwarves underground.    It is said to have devoured thaigs, turning fair things into noxious waste.   It consumed living warriors, turning them to slime.   It could also do the same to the bones of the dead.   It was associated with foulness, poison, filth, disease and desecration that threatened the Stone itself.     The only way the dwarves found to deal with it was chain in within an orb, bound with lyrium stained with the blood of a hundred warriors.     It is said to  have insatiable hunger.

So it could just be a immensely powerful hunger demon but I wonder if it is something more, particularly since the dwarves bound it and took it to the surface specifically so it could not escape, or if it did it would not harm the Stone.   So essentially another powerful creature that was meant to be kept imprisoned so it could not cause harm and which Hawke and Co could inadvertently release.   Although not exactly unaware of what they were doing since there were codices warning them.

At least one of the Forgotten Ones was supposed to associated with disease and pestilence; could it be this demon?  When confronted it initially appears in humanoid form but later changes to a spectral dragon, a form associated with both the Evanuris and the old gods.   Also the elves were meant to have trapped something bad in the Deep Roads.   We have all assume this was possibly red lyrium or the Blight but could it have been this thing?    In fact, considering its original associated with the dwarves and the Deep Roads, could it in some way have been connected with the origins of the Blight?

You could argue that it could hardly have been  Forgotten Ones since Hawke's party defeated it pretty easily.    However, like Solas it could have been weakened by being imprisoned for so long without being able to feed.     In any case, it would seem its chief threat is not in direct confrontation but in what it can do if left running around unchecked.   So having destroyed its mortal form it has returned to the Fade until it can find another way back to the world.      It was noticeable that hunger demons have been absent from our enemies since DAO, apart from this one confrontation in Legacy.

So was this just a red herring and he will never be heard from again, or due you think he is linked to whole plot with Solas as one of the Forgotten Ones, particularly as there are said to be elves who worship the Forgotten Ones in the Tirashan.

I'm of the mind that Malvernis is either a really powerful demon or he could indeed be one of the Forgotten Ones.

But since he's an optional boss and there isn't much else said about him, the later isn't really conclusively possible right now. So at the very least, he's a powerful demon.

The whole of Legacy was optional but it was stated that even if your Hawke never freed Corypheus as part of your game, the events still happened.   So you can argue the same with Malvernis.   After all Varric was meant to be recounting events to Cassandra, so he simply missed that bit out not thinking it important to the main narrative.   The fact is this creature was introduced and had a fair bit of description about his origins and capabilities that were no really relevant to the fight with him but do mean that this is part of the lore of DA.

Malvernis is a very interesting character. His descriptors honestly remind me of the Blight. I hope BW explores this character more.
