Hello,

I recently began Mass Effect 3 as a vanguard, like in the previous games. But ME3 Vanguard isn't as fun as it was in ME2.

Do you have a build like the vanguard in this video ?

Thanks, and sorry if my english is bad, I'm french.

Closest equivalent would be Kronner's Commander Shepard, the honorary Krogan Battlemaster Vanguard build.

Some time after he wrote his guide, Fortification was buffed to become better than Barrier.

Also, fire explosions were changed so you could detonate them without first having to kill the enemy with the detonating power. This meant that the squad evolution at rank 4 became a bit better choice than the damage evolution.

Also, the radius evolution of Charge is considered much better than the force and damage version since it can hit multiple targets to create explosions.

But in short, here would be the current build:

Biotic Charge: Radius - Weapon Synergy - Barrier

Incendiary Ammo: Squad Bonus - Headshots - Explosive Burst

Assault Mastery: Damage - Weight Capacity - Shotgun Damage

Fitness: Health and Shields - Melee Synergy - Health and Shields        (no sense taking shield recharge rate at rank 5 since charge replenishes your shields)

Fortification: Durability - Power Synergy - Durability     (Power Synergy at rank 5 of Fortification also increases ammo power damage)

If you want an experience slightly closer to ME2, then:

  • switch Incendiary Ammo rank 4 from Squad Bonus to Damage
  • add cryo ammo (squad bonus - headshots - frozen vulnerability)
  • switch Biotic Charge rank 4 from Radius to Force and Damage
  • (Optional.) Remove Fortification

For weapons, use the Claymore or Wraith when you get enough credits. You could also use the Raider (found in the Leviathan DLC). You could also use the Talon pistol or any of the other shotguns in the game.

Build priority:

Assuming you are importing a level 30 Shepard from Mass Effect 2:

  1. Make sure to reset your talent points in Mass Effect 2 before importing.
  2. Max Charge
  3. Get Assault Mastery to rank 5
  4. Max Incendiary Ammo
  5. (For level 30 import) At Mars, max Assault Mastery.
  6. Max Fortification
  7. Max Fitness

Charge is the most important since it replenishes your shields and provides +50% damage protection for 4 seconds after a charge.

Assault Mastery is important for increasing weapon damage and weight capacity so you can use bigger guns with less penalty

Incendiary Ammo with Explosive Burst is the most damaging ammo type in the game.

Fortification provides damage protection at all times.

Save Fitness to last since more damage protection (charge and Fortification) is more important than health and shields.
