Ok.  So what missions would definitely do after Horizon?  I assume that the other missions can be done after Collector ship mission.  I was going to do a bunch of N7 missions, but I didn't realize that they counted for the 5 mission trigger.  Should I wait on those until after the collector ship mission?  I don't think I bought the Damage protection upgrade on the Citadel so I will need to back track for that.  I will do that before I do Horizon.

The mission counter only kicks in after you've recruited Legion, you can do as many missions as you want post-Horizon before recruting Legion.

Right.  Maybe I am beating a dead horse.  Whatever I don't do before the Collector ship I can do after so long as it is before IFF and getting Legion.  I know that some people edit saved games, but I am not going to do that.

Exactly - going after the IFF is the tipping of the hat at the reapers - It is Shepard saying, "I am ready to go, and coming after you."  

 

If you do LOTSB after the main mission there are interesting changes, and the same with Arrival.

Yes I intend to recruit everyone and do everyone's loyalty mission.  So after IFF I can do Legion and Tali's loyalty mission?  I have heard that it results in some interesting dialogue.

After talking with Legion, if it hasn't revealed its loyalty mission at that point, take Legion on Tali's loyalty mission. Once completed, talk with Legion. It will reveal its loyalty mission at that time. Go complete it.

If you want, recruit Tali after the IFF mission and after activating the geth.  Take Legion to recruit Tali. Some dialogue from Kal"Reegar and Tali about Legion from both. **NOTE** Talk to Tali right away, after she has been recruited, to get the shield upgrade for the ship. After getting the shield upgrade from Tali,, talk with Legion. It should reveal its loyalty mission. Complete it. That will be 2 missions which will activate the collectors taking the crew. Since you have everyone loyal at that time except Tali, she should survive as long as she's not put in a spot that would get her killed. Leave Grunt, Zaeed and Garrus to hold the line making it easier for Tali to survive.

 

After the suicide mission, take Legion on Tali's loyalty mission
 

Also for the 5 mission/assignments to trigger the Collector ship, do the assignments on Illium count?  If I want to up grade the damage protection modules as suggested above I will need to return to the Citadel.  Would this count?  I have all the DLCs so at this point I have 6 squad members.  I did recruit Grunt.

If you only have 6 squadmates at that time, it won't matter how many missions are completed. 8 squadmates are needed for the collector ship mission to activate. Do all that you want, then recruit 2 more squadmates to activate the collector ship mission

Thanks.  I think that the way my sequence is going I am going to do all the loyalty missions, except Legion before IFF.  I will take Tali on Legion's loyalty mission.   I just completed the Collector ship.

I tend to do his and Kasumi's pretty early on or at least in the first half of the game. Mostly because the resourcves I find on those missions I find just too valuable to me and I want to get maximum use out of them.

Basically anything that's listed as a mission counts towards that 5 whether it's DLC, loyalty missions or recruitment but it is up to you which 5 missions you choose to do.

yep  pretty much picking up the IFF and getting Legion kicks off the ending to the story basically. You can leave some missions undone if you wish but if any of those aer loyalty missions you do risk losing people. So if you want to have a good chance of keeping everyone alive I'd recommend you at least do the loyalty missions.
