Differences between difficulties...

Hello there.

I know this person who loves the Da games, but only ever play them on normal.

I've been giving her some tips and she is in for the first time playing inquisition on hard. Recently told me that she felt that with the tactics I gave her, both the fallow mire and haven quests were a piece of cake.

Good for her.

But I got curious, because I considered both punishing, finishing them by the skin of my teeth. Obviously the fact that I played nightmare, not hard, have a lot to do with it; but while I totally expected her to be able to win, I didn't think she would go from "no can do" to "piece of cake" with the broad stroke of tactics I passed on (didn't want to give all details and prevent her from discovering her own style).

And I can't comment by experience because I never played hard; played normal as training wheels than went to nightmare.

So my question is: what exactly are the buffs and debuffs both party members and enemies get in the different difficulty settings? How much harder is nightmare from hard, and so on, so forth...

There may be more effects than these, but these are what I'm aware of:

 

When an enemy attacks a party member, the enemy armor penetration factor in combat damage is increased, as follows:

 

armor_multiplier: Used to normalize the armor values of party members to variations in enemy damage output across different difficulties. The possible values are:

  • Casual: 65%
  • Normal: 100%
  • Hard: 140%
  • Nightmare: 200%

 

Damage versus party members is increased directly, as well:

  • difficulty_bonus: Bonus applied based on difficulty level. The possible values are:
    • Casual: -35%
    • Normal: 0%
    • Hard: 40%
    • Nightmare: 100%

 

Maximum health of enemies is also increased, but I don't have values for that.

 

Finally, some abilities, like guard generation and barrier generation are enabled in Nightmare. Not sure if they are enabled at lower difficulties.

 

BTW, if you want to make Nightmare more challenging, use Trials.

The numbers roughly (VERY roughly) mean that hard is twice as difficult as normal, and nightmare 4 times as difficult as normal (not counting the extra buffs) if I am reading it correctly. A larger difference than I expected to be sure...

Nightmare x4 Normal isn't really the big increase that you'd think. Character damage output, once crafting and looting is taken into account, scales up much more rapidly, which is why around XP level 12 Nightmare stops being threatening and by level 16 it's a cake walk.

But this is also true in the lower difficulties as well, isn't it? Speaks more of how crazily easy the other dificulties are by that time...

Yes, absolutely. And, with the Golden Nug, even low XP levels are easy on Nightmare. The only limitation is the low tier of mats available, but sticking Tier 1 mats in the Chromatic Greatsword or Encore schematics still creates OP gear for the early game.

Just in the hinterlands on nightmare dw rogue, i made the step up from casual, apart from using health pots occassionaly, my dw is wrecking stuff, certain npc's can die quicker like ritts by not getting there quick enough but damn i dont get why its not challenging me yet.

Bruisers and mages spamming ice mine are annoying, other then that its a decent challenge so far

Not that far yet, the prowlers are a pain with stealth
