and even that mechanic wont be realistic, as you just instantly absorb the food/water =P

The problem is the short elevator ride was boring. Gamers hate being bored while playing games they're playing to have fun.

I suppose. Sometimes though, it's nice to kind of have slower pace moments. It doesn't need to be high adrenaline, blood-bumping, butt-slapping action all the time. Sometimes you just need to take a moment, take in the view, and let out a sigh of relief at how beautiful the scenery is. Or is that only me? I don't know. I like to enjoy the game and take in the whole experience.

Well I'm not saying it needs to be all action all the time.

I mentioned the opening of Half-Life because it's a similar situation. There's no action, and you don't even get a weapon for about 15 minutes(more if you're taking in the sights).

The reason why it wasn't widely complained about is because there is scenery to look at during that time. It's not just you in an enclosed elevator with the same dozen or so lines repeated over and over.

The elevator is nothing more than a "sit here and wait X seconds doing nothing until we let you go".

That's true. In fairness, I think BioWare could implement them much better now if they felt the need to do so. ME1 was made pre-EA, so BioWare had limited resources and money. With their budget and resources post-EA, they would have a lot more capacity to rectify these issues people may have had with ME1. Honestly, ME1 was way too ambitious for the budget and staff BioWare had at the time. It's truly amazing what they were able to pull off with that game.

They could do a lot better now, true. It would actually be pretty awesome to have gotten to see various parts of the Citadel through the travel system.

Or to get a bird's eye view of a planet as we come into the atmosphere on the shuttle before getting to run around it on the ground.

Yep. I was bummed the entire galaxy map feature was stripped and simplified because the X360 didn't have enough RAM or hard drive space to support what BioWare originally wanted to do with ME1. Thankfully, I think some of the really ambitious ideas BioWare had for ME1 are actually making their way into MEA, so that's something to look forward to, at least. Definitely, the mako is getting a much needed makeover and a second chance. I cannot wait!

If the structure were bigger, the elevators could move faster. Since the game doesn't need to render the moving environment outside the elevator, there's no limit to how fast the elevators could go.

Like a Star Trek turbolift? I don't know if that stays credible past a certain size. But yeah, the VFX made this worse than it had to be.

Personally, I'd prefer to model the size.  So I want long trips to take longer.

I'd also like to be able to do things like manage inventory or read the codex while unpaused, so that would be a good way to spend that time.

My only regret with the elevators is that unless you constantly use them even just for the sake of using them, it still takes forever to go through all the unique banter.

What ?

I prefer the elevator than the horrible endless loadings on ME2... my game even crashed one day because of one of them XD "this loading is SLOW... wait, it's been 10 minutes already... something's wrong..." (on computer it's maybe different but on PS3 ... )

Elevators, at least you have musics (lol), news, and your squad was talking on your back.

Just imagine: We could have had elevators in ME2! The Miranda fandom would be even bigger.

I like it. Still in-universe since an omni-tool would have all the functionality of a smartphone.

Yep. Look at Tali. Got upgraded to a romance arc because of ME1 elevators and her bouncing and jittering idle animations in them (dat jiggly tho)

Also loved the Wrex Flex animations. It's like he was trying to intimidate the elevator into going faster so those meddling kids would stop asking him about the genophage.

Hated how half the time I tried to get my squad to talk to stop being bricks and talk to each other, I'd hear announcements about Conrad Verner or Kalisah instead (often on repeat). That news stuff should have been confined to ambient sounds in certain areas like in ME3 so I didn't have to ride the C-Sec elevator 20 times in a row to hear banter.

I liked the elevators tho. Wrex discussing the genophage with Garrus. Ashley and Tali talking about sexism (or lack therof) in their respective cultures. The squad starting as a bunch of mistrustful and sometimes racist people slowly growing to tolerate each other over the course of the game in later visits, after working together. It was those little details that helped to flesh out the universe that much more.

Yeah everyone bugging and criticizing you for your people's history gets old after a bit.

Guys, I just read some blog of a gamedev with 30+ years experience with SF games ad now I must tell you: seamless space to planet transitions are not posible with the tech we have, that's  actually decades away.

Sorry.

Remember how BG1 worked. The game automatically unpaused when you opened your inventory. I loved that design. I want that back.
