According to a video Naughty Dog released about Uncharted 4 a few days ago, they're able to have loading happen during a cutscene so there's a seamless transition.
So I think it's possible for the Mako to drop from the ship to the earth as a load / cut scene and be seamless. This is the new gen hardware after all.

Guys, I just read some blog of a gamedev with 30+ years experience with SF games ad now I must tell you: seamless space to planet transitions are not posible with the tech we have, that's actually decades away.
