imo Vanguard would be most fitting.  Ryder is a pathfinder and aggressively charging forward to colonize new planet.

Well, since the PC is a Pathfinder, why not a Pathfinder class?

Attrib = Highly Adaptable, Superior Intelligence, Keen Observer, Empath, High Stamina

If the PC (a relative unknown member of the ARK) is thrown into Command as a Pathfinder/Leader due to unfortunate circumstances, then this noob with the above attributes ought to  survive and grow in the "forced role".

Until I get Bioware confirmation that our PC's name is Ryder, I refuse to call him/her Ryder. Just the Pathfinder.

Bioware said that the person that we saw in the E3 trailer was NOT the Pathfinder.

The dog tags in the N7 trailer could be and Easter Egg or a clue.... but I don't accept it as canon until told so. :)

ANYWAY.

I always play Vanguard first. I like to get up close and personal and 'splode. My husband always plays Soldier. Booooooorrrrrrrrring.

Same. I usually just call them the protag. I don't want to start thinking of them as 'Ryder' just for Bioware to reveal further down the line that their name is Smith. Or Baker. Or... Vasquez.

On topic, I don't want a default class for marketing etc. But if they did have one, it should be Sentinel. That incorporates all the main combat elements: traditional combat, biotics, tech.

The N7 guy was directly running towards enemies in the trailer.  No cloak.  No charge.

Makes me think soldier.  But at the same time N7 was running forward with a pistol instead of an assault rifle.

IDK anymore

Same as with Shep I'd imagine soldier will be default but I always choose for myself what I'm going to be each time anyway.

It's not a matter of "fitting" - it's a matter of "every game ever made defaults to the Soldier / Warrior / melee smashy-smash class". Besides, don't classes like Vanguard typically get described in layman's terms as "part Soldier, part Biotic"? Makes little sense to default to such a description when such terms have not been established (for newcomers).

I hope they do something like you said.

Could we stop assuming Ryder is the PC?

No.

I already conformed myself with calling the male version RyDude and the female Rydette.

I'll cling to it untill they reveal it's not the case (if they do).

Was it confirmed that Ryder was the PC? ... all the bad pun in my head starts to form...

Not yet. It's just an assumption based on the dogtag in the trailer. That, and the similarity to Ride. (Sally Ride)

The protagonist having a name derived from a famous astronauts name would be in keeping with Shepard being named after Alan Shepard.

It is equally possible that Ryder could be the N7 from the trailer though, rather than the player character.

Nothing confirmed yet. It's a popular speculation that Ryder is the N7 that goes missing early on (and surprise! turns out evil at the end!...) and we play as Pathfinder who finds him/her blah blah

Pathfinder sounds more like a scout and the closet analog to a scout is the infiltrator, so yeah infiltrator works better.

So if the mook in the trailer isn't the protag, what is the trailer even about? Kinda seems like they just threw something random together to get some oohs and ahs and keep people from forgetting a new ME game is supposedly coming.

Oh, nice avatar btw. Good show and manga series.

It's not necessarily a mook. From what Bioware said it seems he might be an important character in the story.

In the N7Day trailer, some dog tags with the name Ryder were present. People theorized it might be the PC's name.

Err. You do know that the strategic aspect of the pathfinders doesn't translate to a TACTICAL equivalent right? There is zero correlation, that is like saying because an army has Strategic initiative in a conflict all their soldiers have better reflexes that allows them to react first.

I just HOPE that there isn't any default soldier cutscenes. Where when you're a biotic or a techy and you try to open a glass window with your gun or get overwhelmed by Vasir when she uses her biotics and you don't use yours.
Man, I can go on all day about those illogical cutscenes that contradict with your damn class.

That stuff still definitely to bothers me, but in hindsight I'd rather the PC be doing SOMETHING rather standing there holding their gun doing nothing because Bioware won't redo a cutscene to 3 time over to fit each archtype

I feel like we could probably find a way to reason that any class is somehow the right class for a pathfinder if we tried.

The Pathfinder must be the Vanguard of our salvation, a Sentinel of MW culture. He must be intellectually capable enough Engineer his way through unknown obstacles, and Adept at forging diplomatic alliances as well as defending against hostile forces in a brave new world. He must have the physical and mental fortitude to Soldier on in the face of adversity and hardship, so that the children of the MW and Ark project will survive, and thrive. When it's all said and done hopefully there will be an intelligent, strong quarian lady his equal, and by uttering the phrase "we'll bang ok", he can Infiltrator suit (or at least in the sequel).

Last one was really difficult, alright. That word severely needs homonyms or something.

Petrovsky: You can't do this, Commander. There's more at stake than you know. That reactor powers life support systems for dozens of wards across the station. Shut it down and thousands of people perish.
Shep: You hearing this, Aria?
Aria: Yes, and I don't care. Shut it down!
Nyreen: Shepard, don't! Try rerouting power away from the force fields!
Shep: Damn it! Hold tight down there...
Petrovsky: Rerouting the power to maintain the other systems... it's commendable. But it might take awhile.
Shep: Maybe if I was a stupid grunt... *immediately shuts down the force field power, saves everyone*

Later, reunited with Aria and Nyreen...
Shep: You okay?
Aria: Never better.
Nyreen: That makes two of us. You brought all your skill to bear and accomplished the task without sacrificing lives. I applaud you.
Aria: Shepard remains cool under pressure. Mind clear, s*** together. Take a good, hard look -- that's what fearlessness looks like.

Engineer FTW. B)

Default characters should always be the generic warrior or soldier.

Mass Effect trilogy was fronted by:

John Spehaprd

Earth born

Sole survivor

Soldier

Why continue that? Why not have no class or gender for the marketing, simply use an iconic symbol, images of the ship or galaxy? Maybe even put the protag in silhouette and use artwork of crew members?

Just my Idea

I think we can safely assume whomever the PC is will be a soldier by default.  It's the class that the typical gamer and average person is going to identify with.
