Which would you prefer the majority of squaddies to be?

Outlaws are characters with a checkered past and colorful rap sheet.  They had roles that aren't widely respected among standard society:

Zaeed (mercenary)

Miranda (2nd in command of a extremist pro-human organization)

Jack (no explanation required she's a thug)

Thane (hitman)

Jimmy Vega (would be thug)

Kasumi (thief)

Goody 2 Shoes are the Ashleys, Liaras, etc.

Goody Two Shoes.

Though how is James Vega a thug or outlaw? Nothing in his backstory or personality suggest that.

Seems rather simplistic, if Miranda  is an outlaw in ME2 then is everyone else on the SR2 not one too.

I want complex characters and nice mix of different personalities.

Agreed James is an Alliance soldier just like Ash/Kaiden was. He may have had an aggressive personality but he obeyed orders and got on with the job even if he disagreed with you.

Personally I prefer people that obey orders and behave themselves whether they like the orders or not but having as mix of characters can be interesting for the story so having both is good.

I like both, but if I had to pick the majority of them then definitely 'goody-2-shoes'.    I like being able to respect my companions and not always trying to put them in their place when they act stupid.

Why would I want the squad to be mostly one thing? That's bad writing.

I'm hoping for Goody Outlaw Shoes.

But, really a mix would be best.

If I had to pick, I would want Outlaws. Outlaws aren't always necessarily bad. Miranda wasn't bad. Garrus (ME2) wasn't bad. Thane wasn't bad. Outlaw does not equate to villainy. It's a much larger spectrum than the Goody-goody type.

A mix of both, but I mainly want outlaws and mercenaries.

Examples include the smuggler story crew from SWTOR, the crew from KotOR II, the crew from Firefly, and the crew from Cowboy Bebop.

I like the logic where Liara is a goody two shoes despite eventually becoming a murderer (Nyxeris likely wasn't justifiable self defense), accessory to multiple murders, and leader of the most notorious criminal organization in the galaxy (whether or not she deserves that position given her personality is up for debate).

Also, I don't remember that part of Vega's characterization. Calling Ash that just because she mostly follows the rules of the military she's a member of is also streching a bit.

We really didn't have any definite "goody two shoes" characters apart from maybe Kaidan IMO. Liara would have counted were ME1 the only game.

For me, it depends on the setting, and I'm most interested in it maintaining a reasonable amount of verisimilitude. I don't want criminals on what is supposed to be a military or official government vessel anymore than I would want a non-undercover soldier, police or government operative on one run by pirates, terrorists or an enemy of their faction (< undercover operative could make for an interesting character idea if we go that route).

In ME1, Wrex didn't really fit on an Alliance/Council affiliate military vessel at all given that he was a known criminal.

In ME2, most of the squadmates were fine given their occupations and the rouge nature of Cerberus. Tali probably makes the least sense given that she's officially part of the quarian military by this point, who have been mortal enemies of Cerberus since the attack on the Flotilla in Ascenscion (wonder what Rael'Zorah thought of her using her furlough to serve on a Cerberus ship, given that he's the one to clear her transfer via email). Jack is also sketchy given her previous relationship with Cerberus, but she isn't subject to any superiors and can do whatever she wants. The ones who didn't make sense were crew members that were stilll Alliance Navy (enemy of Cerberus) like Chakwas, Joker etc. At least Donnely and Daniels do get punished and have to be pardoned in ME3, which was a nice touch.

ME3 had an official Alliance military vessel with criminals (Liara, Wrex temporarily), and two illegal (under Council/Alliance law) uncontrolled AI's, one of which is working for an enemy faction of the Alliance (Legion/VI). It streches credulity that literally no one in the ship's crew reported at least the AI's to someone in the Alliance.

Well, since my favorites of that bunch are definitely jack, Zaeed and thane (*a single teardrop falls*) I guess that puts me squarely in the Outlaws camp.

I don't consider vega a thug. Pretty much just a bulked up soldier boy. And Miranda is just misguided (and annoying).

The outlaws are just more interesting.

It really depends on the plot of the game and the main character's background.

A team composed entirely of scoundrels and outlaws wouldn't be a good fit for a Spectre and N7 on a government mission, while the team composed entirely of soldiers and C-Sec officers wouldn't mesh well with a space pirate protagonist.

Well this is an over-simplified question and answer, but I'm inclined to go with the Outlaws, because they are more likely to have that mean-streak you want in your guys when it's all on the line. Also, I tend to be very pragmatic in decision-making, and it's nice not to have too much issue with the ones I'm leading.

But, again, this is all an over-simplification. I'm a goody two-shoes but still practical-minded, and always had some nasty to me as a competitive athlete.

I liked how different squadmates were on different points on the "Lawful-Thug" scale, and how your personality (Paragon-Renegade) could sway them, but not to an extreme.

Paragon-Shep can influence Jack to be a bit nicer and leave her "look out for #1" mentality behind, but she's still "JACK", still rough around the edges.

They remain their own characters, but they also mirror Shepard to a degree.

I like that.  It gives the choice of how you treat them some weight, your choice of demeanor has an effect on them.

So I'd honestly prefer a "goody-two-shoes" squad (I don't want to worry about being stabbed in the back by an "outlaw" or worry about them jeopardizing the mission), because half the time I'm there to SOLVE problems caused by "outlaws", sometimes by the very "outlaw" I've brought with me.

Don't get me wrong, it's interesting and makes for good roleplaying/gameplay, but sometimes it would be nice to have someone who ISN'T a wanted criminal or a potty-mouth or some such.

I'm all for having an "anti-hero", but you need a real "hero" to counterbalance, otherwise you get red-n-black all over and it hurts the eyes.

All said, I think Andromeda's squadmates are gonna be fun, interesting, and cool to have around.

A little of both. Goody two shoes are just as capable of ****** up as outlaws are.

Some of both, with a gray area in between.

James Vega, the altruistic farm boy turned alliance soldier, isn't in any way a thug.

If I choose Goody Two Shoes that means no Krogan.

I want Krogan, love Krogan, need Krogan.
