There was a disconnect between a grown up writing team that made a race of sage diplomats and a fratbro art team that wanted hot blue ****** to ****** to. The same art team that openly laughed at the idea of female turians or krogan. "Like, what do you do with the females, put on lipstick or something, lmao".

I wonder the kind of reaction a female art director would have gotten from the righteous gaming community if she had designed every race in the game as females and said something similar to that when asked how come there aren't any males in the game. "LOL how do you even make a male, do you just put a mustache on the model, ayy lmao." Really try to imagine that interview.

When the writers face the fact that they have no alien females, they have to come up with lore excuses to keep all the females confined to one remote world out of reach, out of view. Oh sure, the salarians are governed by very powerful females in that one world over there which you never go to. Let's not be obtuse, ok? That's not ground-up world-building. That's a cop out to deal with the art team's negligence. And the same happens with the lore related to the Asari. The art team wanted hot strippers and the writers had to adapt to that as best they could, writing around what they had.

Thankfully, someone must have brought this to their attention because after the release of that interview, they were able to make a cool female turian. Well done bros. But the point is the writing team and the art team come from different places and they have a hard time working together.

Bring writers and artists closer and you remove the cause of any problem the asari might have.

Wow that's pretty awful. The lead art designer for a game thinks putting lipstick on a character to make them female is the best option.

Yeah there's art design at fault for not showing females of other species, but who knows whether it's also a budget issue and/or the writers just not considering it. Which came first, the art budget dictating how many models they could create, or the game writing which only required male turians, krogan, salarians, etc?

This does highlight an issue with ME, though; the asari are the default non-human females for the majority of the games. It feels like the designers thought, well we have an all-female race so we've checked that box, let's make everyone else male.

What makes your favorite food your favorite food?  It's all a matter of taste and opinion.

You're right, their head tentacles do remind me of calamari.

Most feminine aliens

They easily win the attractiveness competition when pitted against the non-human races.  For example would you rather an Asari bed buddy or a Salarian

Personally, I prefer human females

Why does everyone think Asaris are attractive? IMO they are quite disgusting with their scales and scalp crests.... they give me creeps...

Come on guys... This is clearly not fan service. I mean, the "plot" of asari are so well-developed. Even Shepard and Wrex agree!

I honestly don't understand why people are so puritane nowadays...strippers and blue alien chicks are bad? So what are you watching folks? Fox News? Life is nice because it has a little bit of everything. I love to imagine my soldier fighting hard and playing hard with a good old asari stripper. Everything has its place in the universe. Sex, hate, joy, duty and fun. Leave things as they are.

So which one of you like Asari girls over human females.

You can be honest.

If ME character design has taught us anything, it's that human females are sexier than Asaris.  Miranda > Liara + Samara + Liara's mama

The notable pro Asari arguments fall into one of two camps.

1) We need attractive females in the game  (Human women look better than Asaris so why do we need blues?)

2) It's sexist if you exclude them (Asari aren't the only ME race with females)

I romanced Liara in my canon playthrough I like her and found her attractive and intelligent. I don't like Miranda that much physically speaking. Devs tried too hard to make her pretty for me. That is my personal preference though.

We have attractive females in BW games already and we need blues because the more choice we have the better. I can romance an Asari just in ME while humans I can romance in real life and other games. The only sexism here would be excluding an all female race just because they have a free spirit and desire to live their sexuality to fullest potential. Human morals aren't really applicable to an alien race.

And fans and artist give the asari "packages" to boot. That's a little excessive but kinky....

I can speak for myself, and I can say that's not it. I feel confortable with games expressing sexuality and I thought it was a shame the kind of step Bioware took with romances after the whole ME1 and Fox New controversy. Not because it had more of less nudity, but because I felt Bioware lost its ways. And instead of being daring, they just played safe to try and avoid any conflict.

So in no way I said strippers are bad, you can have those. But Asari are made in a way to appeal to players as a sex object first and everything else second. Hence the fact they are pretty much female humans.  That I think is a unoriginal concept.

Let's say the Asari role as strippers was played by female Batarians. From a in-universe point of view, it makes as much sense. Why would a Turian be more atracted to a Asari than a Batarian? But then, would you be just as confortable paying them to strip to your Shepard? Maybe you would, but most people wouldn't.

But it's just a detail. I can see other people wouldn't mind if the Asari were gone either, while others would. And although I'm with the first group, I can't say I would have any strong feeling with the Asari being in Andromeda. I do hope they tried to shake things up with the Milk Way races, not only Asari but all other that survive in Andromeda.

Yes, Asari are one of the trademark races of the MEU.

Liara can go yaknowwhat herself though.

I would indeed mind if they don't return because they are one of the most iconic, interesting and fleshed out races in the setting. Luckily there is almost NO chance of this happening.

Blue humans with tentacles instead of hair. Such iconic, much wow.

It is fine if you are a woman too. Pretty sure BW is paying attention to female gamers too considering their last game DAI was even friendlier to female gamers than male.

von uber is overlooking the fact that women can also fool around with Asaris and even reproduce with them.

Asari don't discriminate when it comes to who they're sex objects for

That's a pretty good counterpoint, sir. Females definitely had far better love interests (heterosexuals and homosexuals) than males in DAI. As a hereo male, myself, I absolutely hated my LI choices in DAI. Josephine was boring and Cassandra was about as interesting as a crumbled up paper bag. Yet, females got the ultimate fan service in Cullen as well as having the most possible romances, in general, I believe.

Yeah, Sovereign was pretty dumb. If it didn't assume direct control of Saren, Shepard would have been powerless to do anything. Sovy might have been able to take out the Alliance ships before they managed to inflict enough damage.

But Sovereign was locked on the tower trying to regain control, unable to fire its main gun at the fleet, instead relying on the large laser weapons in its tentacles to fire at the fleet. There were more than four or six ships firing at it. A reaper containing a supposedly highly advanced AI, a nation, independent, free of all weakness, should have been able to multi-task enough to control one stupid hopper to fight Shepard and fight off the fleet. Fighting Shepard was a mere nuisance. Shepard was bacteria to it. The hopper was like sending a white blood cell to do the job. "Assuming control of this form."

And the Normandy with it's pre-Thanix upgrade getting the kill shot that blew straight through the entire reaper? .... because heroism.... This is another thing that doesn't make sense.

Even if there were a thousand ships firing at Sovereign, the reaper still would not of been damaged. It took no damage after its shields were dropped. The whole scene was setup for the itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny frigate, with a fighter on each side, to destroy the reaper. For that one moment, the SR1 was the most powerful ship in the galaxy.

I honestly don't understand why people are so puritane nowadays...strippers and blue alien chicks are bad? So what are you watching folks? Fox News?

That's part of it, but there's a degree of subjectivity here. Personally, I'm in no way a "puritan" or think that sex is a bad thing, but I think it's damaging to women when you portray the vast majority of a species that makes up some of the only females in the setting as primarily aspiring to be strippers, mercenaries or prostitutes, not to mention it makes zero sense from a demographic perspective as already mentioned.

I mean think about the quarians. As of ME3, they're fully in the "sexy aliens" trope too regardless of having two genders, but they don't have some contrived and obviously fanservice lore like "dancing half naked/ promiscuity strengthens their immune system, so these are common cultural traits". Drell were created as another race that could be banged without the (relatively normal) person throwing up at the thought of it, but we don't have scantily clad hunks of them everywhere (indeed there seems to be approximately 3 in existence) and their planet of hats seems to simply be wetwork. You can have that sort of thing without it being the defining characteristic of an entire species or confined almost solely to them in setting. (i.e. turains or whatever should have their own strippers and prostitutes, not default to asari ones).

Though the asari were hardly offenders at all in this regard come ME3, no worse than humans at least. There were one or two strippers on stage in Purgatory (along with human women) that I wouldn't have even noticed had the final conversation with Steve not pointed them out. Most of the rest were portrayed as competent scientists, soldiers, leaders or ordinary citizens in normal, practical garb or armor no more shapely than the human or quarian versions.

I might have gotten on board back when they were created in ME1, and all the writers/art staff were drooling over creating an entire species specifically for juvenile Orion girl fantasies, but they evolved and It's not really an outstanding issue at all today unless you've got some really fringe "feminism" going on. Not that my or anyone else's individual opinion matters anyway because asari are a culturally defining (to most people who know what ME is) and very popular part of the setting that I'd guess would be the very last alien species to be deleted.
