I don't like Assassin. At all. You have the double dagger tree that involves blades, then you have the Assassin tree that has...even more blades. No thanks. By the time i reach my specialization i want something different. Not just amped up variations of the same thing.

When in doubt, go Tempest.

Okay that is one point less for the Assassin profession

With my current playthrough i am playing as a Rogue so i am at Skyhold but what is the best way to go from there Artificer Assassin or Tempest and can you guys tell me what skill points i have to use to make a powerful Rogue in either of the professions

If you're a duel-wielding go with Assasin.

If you're an archer go with Artificer.

If you want to do elemental damage then go with Tempest.

Assassin just being more for blades and is just an 'upgraded' duel wield.  There is only one blade-y skill, hidden blades, and that can be easily ignored on most builds.

I find little need to min-max if you are only playing on Hard Mode. My Dalish Inquisitor uses a bow and I picked the Assassin specialization because 1) excellent burst damage and (most importantly) 2) Assassin sounds cooler than Tempest. Granted, you lose one funny line of dialogue with Iron Bull in Trespasser but I think it a small price to pay.

The best way to go is gonna depend on how you like to play.

Funny line of dialogue?

Artificer kills things by using the focus ability that gives you two doppelgangers. But you must also combine this with a strong bow, Leaping Shot, and the % chance of Hidden Blades + five extra hits Fade Touched material being worked into your armor and bow.

Assassin is mostly garbage except in a team setting. I tried to use the focus ability with Cole to sneak up on Darkspawn in the Western Approach, and it didn't even work. The Darkspawn detected me as I entered combat range as if we weren't cloaked.

I struggle when trying to assign points to Cole because i find Assassin so boring. I just use his points towards everything but Archer and Assassin.

The points should go down the left side of the Assassin tree all the way to Mark of Death.

Also, I split Cole's points up among all five trees. He had the three main dagger moves (not parry), he had Longshot and Leaping Shot, he had Caltrops and Hook and Chain (though I didn't use this much) as well as Throwing Knives, he had Stealth and dodge and the mouse icon passive, and all the Assassin skills on the left side downward. No focus ability.

This is a vital distinction that separates the Assassin from Tempest and Artificer in that Assassin does not provide anything new to the conventional Rogue's arsenal. Put simply, it does not change the Rogue's standard metagame.

Hidden Blades is a ranged blade attack, not unlike Throwing Blades. Knockout Bomb is a ranged area of effect version of Knockout Power. The only unique power you get is Mark of Death which is very good but that's it really. Heck, the Assassin even has a passive that is rather similar to the one in the standard Rogue passives - Ambush in the Subterfuge tree is quite similar to Gaps in the Armor in the Assassin specialization.

However, there are no conventional Rogue abilities that can replace Flask of Fire, Flask of Frost, Flask of Lightning, Spike Trap, Elemental Mines and Fallback Plan. There are no Rogue passives that are similar to the passives in Artificer or Tempest either. They are all unique. You feel like you are actually learning something more.

When I finally got to skyhold, I quickly figured out that each of my companions had thier own specialty, and that thier speciialty matched with the ones availible to me (if I matched thier class).

My advice is to simply try playing with your companions for a bit. In your case that is your rogues (Cole the Assasin, Sera the Tempest and Varric the Artificier). Simply play as them for a bit while you rack up extra skill points for your Inquisitor, and see what's right for you. Despite all the of the theoretical and logical stuff you may see on here of X specialty is better for Y type of playstyle, sometimes every individual player simply take different to certain specializations.

For instance, I tried to experiment with the Artificier specialization because I was an archer that liked to skit around. But no matter how often I played with it, the skills didn't come as smoothly to me as the Assassin specialization did. It just felt better to me for whatever reason.

Artificer, to me, doesn't seem to mesh well with ranged weapons, and Varric (the AI) is horrible at it. I'm also annoyed that the focus talent is bow-based. Otherwise, I'm enjoying the heck out of it as a DWer. Everything explodes and I clean up the leftovers.

Okay maybe a stupid question but what do you mean by two doppelgangers ?

In one of my previous playthroughs i used Cole for close combat and he died a lot during my quests so i now give him a bow i can't get it to work properly the Assassin skills with the two daggers

That's not a bad idea to play with Sera Cole and Varric for a while and see what i like most

Thank you

Well this narrows it down if there is only one Assassin skill that is unique
