In Dragon Age Origins, it was easy to check what your level of approval (and romancibility) was with every other character. So also with DA2. What about in Inquisition? Trying to raise adequate favorability with Sera, for example, is a tricky business. Is there any way to check how I'm doing with her or with other characters? And what of non-playable characters like Josephine?
Dumb basic question for today....companion approval

Only companions can "approve" of your actions, so you don't need to worry about advisors like Josephine or other characters. There's no way to check how high or low your approval with your companion is. At least not directly. One of not direct ways is to check it is to listen to their greetings/farewells. They change depending how they feel about you (works with most companions). Also some cutscenes are tied to approval, so you'll only get them when you get it to certain level.

Nope, no way at all. There is a point system. Slightly approve/disapprove is 5 points, approve/disapprove is 10, and I think greatly approve/disapprove is 20, and I believe the max is +/- 100. There are no visible meters for the player to look at, and if this is a concern for you, you'll just have to mentally keep track of it yourself.

That's what I thought, but wanted to make sure. Surprising that this aspect is less developed than in either origins or DA2. Then again, perhaps they decided they wanted to make it like real life where when "it" happens, it comes as a pleasant surprise. (Or -- alternately -- when "it" doesn't happen in a very big and final way!

Just use the Approval (Inquisition) page on the DA wiki.
Most Charas have special lines, which they say depending on their approval when they greet you.
for example here Varric's lines:
Hostile (-5 to -75):
- Varric will greet the Inquisitor with "Yes?"
Neutral (-5 to 34):
- Varric will greet the Inquisitor with "Need something?"
Warm (35 to 74)
- Varric will greet the Inquisitor in one of the following ways:
- "I've got a minute if you need something."
- "Looking for someone to talk your ear off? I think I can oblige."
Friendly (75 to 125): Varric will greet the Inquisitor in one of the following ways:
- "I can spare some time. What do you need?"
- "If you've got questions, I'm your dwarf."
- "Need something, or are you just here to admire the dwarf?"
- "Something you wanted to talk about?"
- "What can I do for you, your inquisitoralness?"

Yeah Varric does tend to asy that last one to my character quite a bit.

I had never failed to get everyone to at least friendship level until my most recent playthrough. I conscripted the mages in order to get max approval from Sera and in return got max disapproval from Dorian, Cole and Solas. I was able to recover with Dorian and Cole to where i got all their personal quests but never did with Solas and never got his All New, Faded For Her Quest. First time that ever happened to me. After that, I figured i'd go all the way and try and get Solas angry enough to where i could hit him but that never happened either.

It's not less developed, it was an intentional shift. They purposely moved away from the friend/rival system of DA2 because there were a lot of complaints and some people could not move away from the idea that red=bad. I'm assuming, but don't know for sure, that they removed the visible meter so that, as you say, it would feel more natural and less gamey.
I don't see how Origins was more developed aside from a visible meter. There were gifts that you could inundate the person with to get them to like you.

I mean think what you will, there is still a point system to it that is clearly defined for approval changes and represented in your save file that they chose to not display to you.

If you're on pc and use a save file editor you can see what the rating for each is but would probably only go to such lengths if you're really curious
Solas saying, "To what do I owe the pleasure?" was totally worth all the choices I made that maximized his disapproval.
why have I never got this? I love sarky Solas

^ He's not being snarky when he says it. It's for the max approval and he says it with affection.
[edit]
Hm... I misread. There must be two versions of this, one for each state. I get max approval for him every time and always get this line.

Really? I only ever got what the Wiki says. Mostly, "My friend," when max approval.
First time I heard the "owe this pleasure" was with max disapproval.
