Life is a death sentence, though?

Stroud actually makes similar remarks when you bring your sibling to him in the Deep Roads, so it's not like some wardens don't feel this way as well. Besides, I'm sure that Alexius would not want that life for his son, whom he adores. If the Joining didn't kill him, he could die in any number of ways during his time as a warden, would have to forsake his family and country, and then risk the Calling later on if he lived long enough.

Hey, 30 years is better than nothing.

The 30 year thing that Alistair mentioned, and the idea that the taint itself will kill a Warden (like some sort of slow poison) was retconned. So on average (it might correlate with the average age of the recruits) 30 years, or sometime around or just past middle age that a Warden starts to hear the calling. A Warden can still Iive longer after they start to hear the calling. Moreover, the average life expectancy in Thedas is probably just below 50 (which is the estimated  life expectancy of a person who lived during the middle ages). The aforementioned age is for people who make it through childhood, the average life expectancy (since it is an average) for the middle ages actually gets dragged down to around 35, due to all of the deaths before the age of 4. I assume Thedas, being a medieval setting, has similar standards of living as our historical medieval period did. Not sure if Bioware has magic add to a better standard of living in Thedas.

To be fair, Alistair says "You've got 30 years to live, give or take."

...Why didn't he seek out the Grey Wardens? True, there is no guarantee that they would take him in, but it definitely is worth a try.

Who says he didn't?

I always thought that Dorian, Felix, Alexius and Mr. Pavus should have all been combined into one storyline. I honestly found Alexius and Felix much more interesting than Dorian and his father, and since his story was that of the tragic gay and his paternal crisis, it could have easily been folded into the existing narrative. Plus the added angst of a terminally ill character as a romance would have been all the feels.

This way they could have milked the angsty gay story for all it's worth! Daddy issues! Societal outcast! DISEASE!

Oh look! We've created time magic!

*Still can't cure blight cooties*

Alexius knew Fiona. I'm curious how it is that he simply didn't use time magic to heal Felix in place of Fiona.
