Can't believe I bought the game but never played it at launch. It's pretty damn good. Some quick questions:

1) Should you use the tactic mode or just control your character and let your companions do w/e they want? What do most people do? When ever I click on them during a battle, well they have all their spells used up anyways. Plus sometimes the camera angles get weird. Yet, I don't know how good the AI really is.

2) I am not big into lore or anything, but DAI lore is pretty interesting. I made a character who is supposed to be not such a good person. Not EVIL, but you know someone who doesn't give a ****. So every time I make a decision or respond to someone I always pick the idgaf answer. Like when people are like OMG IS IT TRUE YOU ARE THE HERALD OF ANDRASTE??? I just say I DONT BELIEVE IN YOUR GODS, or something like that. But recently I started to notice that my companions approve or not approve what I say. And, I didn't know that. Specifically Cassandra always disapproves. Does that make a difference? Should I try to gain everyone's approval?

3) Best armor/wep in game dropped out in the world or have to be crafted? And I noticed not all vendors carry the same loot, so I am thinking as you get to new areas new vendors unlock new and better stuff?

4) Will my companions also get to max lvl like me? I am already 1-2 levels ahead of them, I dont know how. They have been with me the whole time.

1. I think it depends on what level of difficulty your playing on. I play on Casual difficulty and on that one you can just leave your companions to it most of the time you may need to pick them up once in a while during boss level fights though (like when fighting a dragon) but generally you can leave them to it. Higher difficulties may require moer mqan management but I can't say for sure though as I don't play on higher difficulties.

2. It depends really generally approval is generally only required if you plawn on romancing one of your companions or not. If you don't plan to then you don't need to worry too much about it.

3. to get the best specs your better of crafting your own weapon and armour. It is possible to beat the game without needing to craft your own stuff  and just use what you find in the field and byu from merchants but this stuff will almost always be lower spec. The crafting system isn't that hard to figuer out though so it is worth doing I'd say. I would suggest though to gather materials while out on missions for the work because it will make getting the equipment a lot easier.

4. Eventually yes but your companions always stay about half a level behind you so you will always level up before they do. The system tells you when they've levelled up by putting an arrow on their status screen

Thanks. One other question, do you have your companions by your side all the time? I see a lot of videos where the person has no companions he is just soloing everything. For example this video a rogue doing high lvl stuff I guess: https://www.youtube....h?v=8D3UgLfzug4

He doesnt have anyone else with him, just solo. Is that because he is too powerful and doesnt care or is it that certain parts of the game are solo?

I would like to add to this. Some companions may leave if their approval gets too low. Also, some companion quests and cutscenes are locked behind specific approval value. If you want to experience everything (well, almost everything, since some cutscenes are locked behind really low approval) your companions have to offer, it's advised to have as high approval with them as possible (of course without sacrificing roleplaying).

Solo game like the one you linked is player's choice. There are a few instances when you're alone, but nothing like that.

yes I do tend to have a squad with me at least while on missions anyway. If I'm doing something simple like shopping in Val Royeaux or something I go on my own but in missions I always have my squad. I think it depends on how good you are at these sorts of games though. I'm not that good but there aer plenty of people around here who probably are. I play these games because I'm a fan of the stories not because I'm especially brilliant at combat or anything.

Not really suer what level this guy is but I do know that the Hivernal is one of the top end dragons in the game. So he's obviously very good and mastered the game well. The only real problem in not having a squad with you is if you're not a rogue you won't be able to unlock a door or light a veilfire if you're not a mage that sort of thing. Whereas if you have a squad with you if you're character dosen't have the ability to unlock a door or light a veil fire you can switch to a companion  who can. You don't have to take companions everywhere you go if you don't want to it's an option but it does limit you when it comes to things like that because you won't be able to do things like pick locks or light veilfires unless your character has those abilities.

Combat is an entirely different thing though you can do it on your own or with a squad. Personally I choose to do it with a squad but others like this guy it seems prefer to do it alone I've seen these sorts of vids before too. But you don't neccessarily have to play the game the way he is. It's entirely optional and depensd on how comfortable you feel in combat. But one thing you shouldn't do is underestimate the dragons as they can be quite tough fights. I quite often find I need to be about at least one level above the dragon in order to be successful in slaying it but again it depends on how confident you are in combat as some people can take a dragon on while stil being 2/3 levels below it I think but as I asid the dragons aer boss level enemies so you do need to be careful when taking them on. It is possible to be overlevelled and smash the game aboiut quite easily later on if you're really good but again you need to level up to those sorts of levels to be able to do that. Not sure if you have the Trespasser DLC or not but you can use the Trials systems included in that to level the playing field if you're finding things too easy though. I've not used the Trials myself but that's more down to the fact I enjoy the game just fine without them

My inquisitor is always a dual-dagger rogue and I tend to micro-manage her and let the AI take care of the others, with some exceptions, as getting Vivianne out of danger with fade step, controlling Cassandra's Charging Bull etc. The AI works surprisingly well.

I basically agree with all comments above. Some additional comments:

I use Pause way more than I use Tactical. Like to make sure everyone has Barrier or Guard (Taunt), or drinks a Regen potion, etc. Then let the AI go while I focus on my IQ.

That said, I've been experimenting with "disabling" Pause and it's like playing a completely different game. More action/shooter than RPG.

AI is really bad at DW rogues and Reaver Warriors. Other Warriors it does okay. Archers it does well except for Leaping Shot (near a cliff, etc.) Mages it does very well, sometimes better than me! Like I might not notice a party member is down, but the AI will whip up a revive almost immediately.

The reason your characters always have no mana/stamina left is because you haven't reserved any. That's actually a good thing, you don't want to handicap the AI by starving it from resources.

If there is an ability you don't want the AI to use, but you do want to use when you control the character, make sure it is an active (takes a slot from the 8 active) and is Disabled in the AI settings. For example, I like to use Grappling Hook when I control Cass or Blackwall, but I hate it when they steal a kill by pulling it away from my killing blow. So I disable it, but leave it active.

2) I am not big into lore or anything, but DAI lore is pretty interesting. I made a character who is supposed to be not such a good person. Not EVIL, but you know someone who doesn't give a ****. Just go with it. My second run was a Jerkquisitor and it's fun. Who cares if some party members you never take with you end up leaving? Just be careful with the ones you care about. You always have one shot to improve their approval before they leave for good. So you'll get some warning. Save their personal quests for that emergency and you should be fine.

Solas won't leave due to disapproval, so feel free to insult him as much as you want. ;)

3) Best armor/wep in game dropped out in the world or have to be crafted? And I noticed not all vendors carry the same loot, so I am thinking as you get to new areas new vendors unlock new and better stuff?

In general, you can craft better weapons than you can find, and crafted weapons don't have level restrictions the same way looted weapons do. So yeah, crafting wins most of the time. There are some exceptions, some looted weapons worth adventuring for, particularly at low level, but yeah.

New merchants do unlock new stuff, but not necessarily better. :) There are two exceptions, the merchant in Emprise du Lion and the merchant in the Hissing Wastes. Those have valuable items that are best in class. Both require a Perk called The Short List, so pay attention to your Influence accumulation and Perk point allocation.

The Black Emporium and the merchant in the Descent DLC also have really good stuff. Those don't need the Short List perk.

Actually I was wondering one other thing, you mentioned some players just play solo, but is it really possible to get armor/weps that good where you can steamroll through the hardest content in the game on the hardest difficulty?

I think it's as I said it depends on how good you are at certain areas of the game like combat but there are Mighty offence  potions and things like that that help boost the amount of damage you can do but you have to find them and know when to use them especially as you can only carry a certain number of them at any given time.

Who says you need good gear to steamroll the hardest content? ;)

I saw a video of a guy that beat the boss in Champions of the Just at XP level 5 (recommended is 4-7), on Nightmare, solo, wearing no armor. He did it with just the abilities he had (Archer), no grenades, no tonics, nothing.

Like sjsharp2011 said, it depends on now good you are at action games.

Well, good stupidly OP gear makes it easy, so even scrubs like me who fat-finger the wrong keys 99% of the time, can join the party :D

That said, I'm not a fan of soloing in Dragon Age games, it just feels a bit lonely. Why do it by yourself, when you can have your best bros Varric and Dorian standing by your side? Wait, why are they by my side? I'm in melee range.... DON'T JUST STAND THERE YOU IDIOTS... OK, that's why people solo.

yeah but it slso depensd on the level of th eenemy as well Iknow I'd never be able to smash the Hivernal on my own without a squad foot soldiers and standard bears or wolves perhaps yes because I have done but I know I could never solo a dragon so I'm kind of glad I can call fo rhelp when taking one on.

yeah I'm usually upto level 7-8 by the time I do that mission or In Hushed Whispers as in my case on my current run. But then I tend to wait till I've done everything I want to do in Haven before taking it on. Because I know that's my last chance before I have to head for Skyhold

Haven becomes unavailable after reaching Skyhold because... reasons

Don't want to spoiler anything. In case you don't know.

Let's just say you'll find out why when you get to that part but once you're there you can't go back. But to be fair to the game that's when at least for me it starts to get interesting as that's tbh when the real game starts. Haven is basically one big tutorial area really where you arebasically learning what needs to be done and putting together the foundations of your Inquisition. But once you get to Skyhyold that's when you start putting that Inquisitoin into action.

Thanks, I dont know. I been avoiding watching youtube videos, unless its something which will effect me for the rest of the game. Like I almost didn;t let Sera join my group, then read that it is permanent, so glad I checked that one out.

Oh, yeah! Unless you have a really good reason not to, take every companion that offers. You can always fire them later! Or max out their disapproval so that they quit.

Yeah it's always a good idea to have as many  options as you can get given eachcharacter has different abilities that are useful in their own way. The only thing i tend to do is depending on the specialization my character is I don't tend to use the character much that I'm sharing it with. Which in my current playthrough is Cassandra given I'm playing a templar warrior myself this time so she's spent most of this playthrough watching from the sidelines. Having said that though I've used her quite a bit in most of my playthroughs as she's almost always a constant companion.
