Going to have to watch the videos again...
I have tried Reaver before and was bored when I realized it had evolved into Dragon-Rage and Devour spam, while toggling Ring-of-Pain. I saw this thread; watched the vids included, and was rejuvenated in the idea of playing a Reaver again. My character was level 12 and I could pick any of the three. So I took the plunge last night and went over to the Western Approach.
At level 12 I was ok (no Dragon-Rage), but once I picked up Dragon-Rage I died...a lot. I was able to pick up the upgrade for Devour for more healing as well as Dragon-Rage by level 14. Gameplay hasn't completely evolved into Dragon-Rage spam simply because I ignore Ring-of-Pain mostly. But I find I'm either spamming Dragon-Rage, or am at really low-life and am spamming Combat Roll+ and Charging Bull+; desperately waiting for Devour to come off of cooldown. I have the Prismatic Axe 2H. Damage is either really good, or I'm dead. And I'm dead more often than not. Those big Darkspawn guys with the 2H weapon just look at me sometimes, and I die...or so it feels that way. Maybe I just need more practice or perhaps I should get rid of the Prismatic Axe (saw it in the level 12 video in the OP) and get something with 10-20% critical chance on it.
What I really miss is being able to detonate cross-class combos. I get so much satisfaction from whirlwinding a group and seeing multiple cross-class combos detonate. The damage isn't as good, but I miss that. I almost want to drop my focus on my reaver completely because it builds so slowly without me detonating combos.
The best thing so far, is that Reaver damage feels like it is good all the time. Before, I had to knock down an enemy (Coup de Grace, Mighty blow+, etc) to get juicy numbers. It's nice to be able to deal good damage to a target that you can't knock down...like a dragon.
The worst thing is a tie between I'm no longer detonating cross-class combos and I'm dying...a lot. Obviously I could relax on the golden nug a bit, but it's frustrating I am not getting the slow-mo whirlwind. I'm also a bit frustrated I lack guard-breaking abilities. I had those before I respec'd to this. And I seem to run into a lot of promoted enemies with lots of guard. StarFlorge has an interesting build that re-implements impact detonators and guard breaking for a 2H reaver, but it looks to be level 25ish or higher.
*sigh*
Not sure I should push forward or roll back to before I chose and try out 2H Champion/Templar. 2H Champion fun really fizzles for me in Jaws of Hakkon (lots of deaths there). 2H Templar is fun, but I didn't want to play that this time.
*EDIT*
So watched the level 16 video (solo vs lvl 23 high dragon) and I think I just realized one of my problems. I'm using Dragon-Rage to get down to 10-20% health. I wanted to stay consistently below 50% (even after devour). That way enhanced belt of urgency is always active. But the video shows dragon-rage to just shy of 50% and then back up with devour, etc. Not sure if the belt is very useful. Perhaps I should not use the belt of urgency at all.
