I've heard some people mention something about a "golden nug" that changed their gameplay? Where exactly do you get that?
While playing the vanilla game on PS4 last year, I once bought that "mysterious box" in Val Royeux and all it gave you was a ridable nug! I assume that's not the same thing.
Nope, different nugs. 
The Golden Nug is a statue that syncs all your schematics and certain collectibles from across all playthroughs. A great way to avoid farming for a specific armor schematic!
It does require an internet connection to sync, and you can find it at the blacksmith's in Haven, the Undercroft of Skyhold, and a couple locations in the Trespasser dlc.
