I dunno. I named my Krogan Soldier "Buffalo," and it still makes me laugh every time I see it.

Every time I click on him for the first time in a few months, I see his name and immediately hear the song in my head as "Buffalo Krogan." Which makes me laugh.

 

So... not so much dark as ridiculously silly in a way that I'm probably one of the few that finds amusing...

If we ever fly on a Normandy-class SR-1, Ryder's default first name should be Rollo or Robert. History is important if it's going to be a human-centric story.

My 'default' first name for first-playthroughs is Kara, for whatever reason... But I'll probably go with Helen for Ryder; naming her after my country's first astronaut feels appropriate. 

 

The default's probably gonna be Sally, right? That'd make sense.

And throw a Japanese/anime name, Akihiro. I wonder if apostrophes will be allowed? Doubtful NPCs outside of in-game computer emails, would use it, but Akihiro "Hiro" Ryder.

I was thinking Leia, easy. Or Iris, going for the Tempest reference without using Miranda.

Or Murphy, which seems to suit her default appearance in the trailer well.

 

I'm pretty woeful with names for male protags. My HoF was named Pip.

Sorry, I just realised how vague that sounded. A little while ago I saw some suggestions around here of using the name Miranda from Shakespeare's play the Tempest. Reference to the ship. Iris is also a character from the play, which I suggested instead since ME already has Miranda Lawson.

With the Fallout and TES universe I have a very very detailed family tree of all the PC's and how they're all related and basically every now and then in a generation a child will either be called Charles or Anthony (my first name and Anthony being my confirmation name (Catholicism)). I have a detailed explanation of why a parent won't just name their child the 'hero' names as they can only do so under the right conditions.

 

With Mass Effect I have a somewhat similar system in place, except without the use of direct descendants but rather an extended family tree which removes the lineage part of it. Regardless I always choose Charles or Anthony BUT if in a game I decide I want something different I use one of the Apollo astronauts names as frankly they have an oddly unique bunch of names.

I always use my name, too lazy for think of anything, and also all characters call you by your last name so I dont see the point of thinking of a good name. They are going to call me Ryder anyway.

I like to add us/ius/ia/io or something to the end of any names I give to my characters. You know, to give them that Latin feel or whatever.

I think I'll just go with something from an anime.  I named my Shepard after Jan Valentine from Hellsing.  I think I'll go with Robin or Kevin from Kinnikuman?  There's still plenty of time to think about it.
