There is also that to consider, yep. Though Ash/Kaidan did rise up the Alliance ranks too.

Maybe if they hadn't been made a Spectre we could have called it the Shepard curse, since they were the only ones of shep's original companions who were not entirely thrilled to see him risen from the dead, heh.

The problem is that it amounted to nothing. The same with the other characters.

Wrex is dead. Wreav takes over

Tali isn't recruited, she's dead. Her loyalty mission isn't complete, no Admiral

Liara still becomes the broker if dlc isn't completed, but it adds up to not much of anything in ME3

Garrus becomes an advisor, but it adds up to nothing.

They're being sent to Horizon to investigate whether Shepard became rogue and whether Cerberus was behind the kidnappings. Wasn't that what Shepard was doing in ME1 as a Spectre candidate? And they found that the Collectors was indeed kidnapping the colonists but they found out that Shepard was with terrorists. Should they be happy about it?

Vega wasn't even a Spectre candidate. In fact, only in Paragon Lost that we see him interact with Hackett and Anderson (along with ME: Conviction). Take what happen in Paragon Lost as his psychological history.

Well, that's all part of being able to play the games in different ways right? Wrex lives and he's happy to see Shep on Tuchanka in ME2, for example. I dunno how much all these choices are supposed to amount to anyway. They're subtld differences in the way the game plays out. I'm okay with that.

I never considered Ash/Kaidan being on Horizon as part of judging their Spectre worthiness. Interesting. I do think that Ash/Kaidan should have been a little more willing to give Shep the benefit of the doubt after all they went through together in ME1, yes. The council and everyone else in the galaxy can bury their heads in the sand and dismiss the reapers as fantasy, but Ash/Kaidan know the truth. The reapers are out there. If Shep says the collectors are connected to the reapers and he's trying to do something about it, they should be willing to hear him out at least.

Let's remember that there's a lot of political connotations to making someone a Spectre, at least human ones. Just showing up out of nowhere and going "hey, this random grunt (James) no one outside of Alliance personnel has ever heard of or had any reason to care about should be a Spectre" would probably sound like a joke to the non-human Council members. Being a "damn good soldier" who's seen some serious **** isn't all there is to it. Human Spectres are still a big enough deal that it'd likely take someone more special or famous to be even considered, when you'd consider how it would look to the galactic public. Everyone knows about the crew of the SSV Normandy. The Virmire Survivor is a big deal, and they still only become a candidate because desperate times allow Udina to push his agenda to get one more in there. They make sense, or at least have a place, politically. Vega would be either much too controversial or, more likely, simply too bizarre an option. Maybe after the Reapers are defeated his candidacy would make some slight kind of sense, possibly. But until then, I'd say politics/PR is a perfectly valid reason he wasn't even considered.
