Can't Interact With/Target Environment

I'm not sure if this might be tied into the mouse sensitivity issue that people have posted on these boards, but it could be.

Sometimes I cannot interact with doors/consoles/characters/etc in the environment.  So far, it seems to be completely random but the item doesn't let me interact with it.  However, sometimes it will just be very finicky and the rectangle around the item with appear to "flicker" as it changes to being "non-useable" to "useable".  I have no idea why this is doing this, but it is very annoying when you can't interact with a mission critical item without reloading or trying to get in the perfect position for it to work.

Has anyone else experienced this and is there a possible solution?

I don't have a solution, but I can report that I'm experiencing exactly the same issue. I've just defeated the Mechs before reaching Tali and Veetor on Freedom's Progress, but I can't get the game to progress because I can't actually get the blue selection reticle on Tali to work so that I can talk to her. There's a wall console and a locker in the same area that I can't interact with either.

That has just started happening to me about 20 minutes ago. I came online to check if anyone had a fix. I keep reloading and restarting the programme.

OMG WTF this blows I'm two minutes into the game and I cannot interact with anything in the game. I am totally shocked that Bioware would even let there name be attached to a game where you cant even control your avatar.

I wouldn't mind so much if it began that early into the game as then I'd be sure that there was simply some system issue. The thing is I've played for one and a half days already and I've in the second phase of the game so it's incredibly frustrating. It seems to be triggered by walking to the CIC.

I've been experiencing the same issue, and at least for situations out of combat, I've found a work around. If you enter, then leave the menu, while looking at whatever you want to look at, it will briefly target it, so if you are quick with the space bar, you can interact. I would like to know what actually causes it though, as it's almost impossible to target abilities in combat.

Also, this doesn't seem to be remedied by reloading, although I've never tried. It's just always there, no matter how long I've been playing. Now that I think about it though, I usually save in the CIC. I'll check when I go back, since I saved on Omega last.

There's no telling how they have it implemented. Considering the fact if you turn off LensFlare, a side effect is -all- interaction boxes, everywhere, gone. Their patch list is growing out the door and around the corner.

ok i figured i might as well post in an update, but i think i fixed the problems when i went ingame and reset all the graphic setting back to there defaults. i wonder if this might be a bug affecting teh game if you change your resolution. as that was teh only setting i had messed with and it seemse to have fixed the problem for now

Others reporting this issue have all been found to be running with a very low framerate (eg) 10fps or below). Due to the way the game renders and handles input, a certain mininum framerate is required to handle interaction with some objects. As suntse has suggested, one potential fix for this issue is to lower your resolution settings or other options and see if that improves your framerate, which should resolve the issue.

I have discovered that, if you go to the in-game menu and save your game, you can then target and interact just fine. For me, the breifing room (on the Normandy) is a trap. I almost have to leave immediately, else I will be trapped in the room and can't interact with the door to leave the room. I discovered that, since the game is saving after the cutscene, and when I save voluntarily, targeting the door works just fine. You can try that some if you may or may not want to lower any settings back to their original defaults.

Add this to the bug list: I suddenly find my character (and sometimes my squad too) about 3 meters off the ground and unable to move. The game continues to play and my character takes damage, gets killed, and I have to resume to move on.

I have learned to use the F5 key a lot (quick save).

Smae problem constantly trying to interact with things that are so obviously there and yet it's more challenging to target them than to fight the encounters .

Btw this is not remedied by reloading. It is however remedied by full computer shut down. And it only remedies the problem of no clickability at all. Full reboot only makes clicking marginally easier if at all.

Ok figured out the fix. For me anyways hope this helps. Framerate is unchangeable on my system so that was definitely not the answer. What did the trick was clicking on my Nvidia icon on my desktop and changing the high quality rating to high performance. Also this did next to nothing to affect my overall quality it did however do whatever what was needed to stop the flickering and impossible targeting issues.

Also I updated my video driver last night; while it didn't fix the problem it may have added to the solution.

The trend for games seems to be fewer driver updates but they are becoming more important than ever. This is especially notable with Bioware products/Lucas Arts.

I've found that Alt+Tabbing out of ME2 and waiting a bit seems to solve the problem almost every time. Also, Mass Affinity prevents it from happening except for on rare occasions.

Hi.

I'm just having the same error/bug.

For me it works if i don't play with a 1920x1080 resolution :( which is a tad annoying..

Apparently it doesn't work well with widescreen or is just me ?

Edit:
I changed some settings in Catalyst Centre and now it works :happy:

I'd thought that all of the (many) threads on the subject had the right data added to them, but apparently the search missed this one, and a couple of others as well!

Replace any sub-optimal video cards with something above the minimum, and it is solved, else just accept the very low and coarse resolution that gets your frame rate out of the basement. Here is Bioware's official word:

Thomas_R_Roy wrote...

I just want to address some of the complaints also. Its not that we don't care about this bug. We just don't know what's wrong yet.

My guess is that your framerate is too low, or there is something wrong with your graphics driver. I can't get into specifics, but the game relies on the graphics card to determine if something was "visible recently". If your frame rate is low enough, then the game will never think something is "visible recently".

Please let me know anything relevant about your graphics card or graphics settings, including the framerate. if possible. If the game is under 10 FPS, it may cause problems.

Thomas_R_Roy wrote...

Ok so I think for some of you the problem is the low framerate. For now, the best solution is for you to get a faster framerate. You can get this by reducing your resolution. We made a technical decision that the game would rely on the framerate being at least a certain level.

I apologize because I know you're great fans, and you want to see the game in full glory even though your machine isn't the fastest. But at the same time, we had to have technical limitations somewhere.

"Video Card = 256 MB (with Pixel Shader 3.0 support). Supported GPU Chips: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or greater; ATI Radeon X1600 Pro or greater. Please note that NVIDIA GeForce 7200, 7300, 7400, 7500, 8100, 8200, 8300, 8400, 9200, and 9300; ATI Radeon HD 2400, 3100, 3200, HD 3450, HD 3470, HD 4200, and HD 4350 are below minimum system requirements. Updates to your video and sound card drivers may be required.  Intel  and S3 video devices are not officially supported in Mass Effect 2."

There you go!

Incidentally, It's been covered thoroughly already (and I've tried catching any
unanswered ones of these before.).  See this summary if you are using
standard, fully supported hardware and yet are still running into such
a problem, and bypass it by choosing a different, but not necessarily
low resolution, screen setting:

I lowered my resolution and the doors started working perfectly. I also played it in windows mode and it seemed to help some. But i hope this helps with people too. only time will tell. And yea.. i hate to say it and i know everyone else here is thinking it but everyone on this thread has at least one peice of their machine that is under system requirments I myself and quite sad of how bad this laptop is.

Ah i've been having that problem since day one but i sorta found a solution to it tought it's annoying as hell. Basically when u hit escape and go to the menu wheel on the PC, and hit esc again and go back into the game while u were looking at the object u were trying to highlight, there's a brief 1-2 second interval where the object lights up. Usually i just look at the unresponsive item i'm trying to interact w/, escape and come back and hold down the spacebar and it usually does the trick for me. Good luck.
