Honestly, the blonde thing is quite ignorable. Its only there to make Kahlee Sanders special in the novels.

It makes sense though. The more mixed race people, the less we'd probably see it. And considering how far it is in the future..

I always said that Americans eventually one day will just look like Native Americans again :P And I suppose Europeans too. I'm half Asian/Caucasian. I already got a head start.

it might be less common, but more likely due to the rates of birth rates among populations prone to it compared to those not so the relative numbers would fall.  Unless there becomes some new pressing reason for natural selection to start phasing it out.

If you're blonde in America you are guaranteed to be European in some amount in ancestry. That goes double if you have blue or green eyes. Having European ancestry allows blondes to be more flexible and eclectic in their thinking. At least if you're American. It's a genetic physiology sort of thing. Instead BioWare proved themselves to be massive hypocrites and declared blondes as dumb and racially weeded out.

Uh...European ancestry means what?

:/

Some good news for blondes: Looks like the stereotype of blondes as less intelligent than others is false (pdf link).

Yeah a few have, I think.

Has anyone pointed out this thread has reached 30 pages?

Okay, I suppose I'll do it.

I'm pretty sure this horrendous style counts as a mullet, but I really admired her bravery for sporting such a thing on her head, so she gets a pass:

That was remarkably hideous, I think the terminator should have shot her for that reason alone! But as for the classics, I think Sharon Stone did it pretty well.

I've probably mentioned this before in this thread, but I'm not sure what the hubbub is over having more blondes around. I mean, c'mon guys. Here is the "realism" line? I do enjoy the BSN oftentimes, but this has gotten more than just a touch silly. I know the forums tend to take things very seriously sometimes, especially when there is little concrete news at the moment.

It's gotten to the point we're applying 21st Century fashion sense and genetics to what could be the 25th century or something like that. Please, think about it really carefully here. The Codex regarding blondes could very well change. Perhaps more people wanted blonde children through genetic engineering, or perhaps more folks start dying their hair blonde.

Also, again, this is where the line is drawn? A feminine race that can mate with anyone that can live up to 1000 years old; space magic aka biotics(I don't mean that in a bad way for the most part); Krogans with their long lives and all having at least one or two backups for their organs and central nervous system; and this is where the buck stops?

I thought somewhere in between a sentient plant spitting out perfect biotic clones, a giant bug talking through a mostly dead Asari, and Shepard was being back from the dead after being blown out of a ship, suffocated from loss of oxygen, then went through the atmosphere crash landing into a planet, all bets are off.

Compaired to all of that, I think I'm just fine with the whole lore behind blondes getting changed. I'm thinking that maybe just some random NPCs and possibly a LI. I don't think anyone is exactly asking to see the majority of NPCs/squadmates become blonde. ;)

I'd bump "the thread" to take some of the heat off, but at this stage, I prefer to be at least somewhat inebriated if I'm going to deliberately offer myself up as a target again. If this thread starts getting close to 50 pages, my ego will feel threatened, and I'm sure I will gallop in to rescue the blondes a wall.

You know, I wouldn't mind seeing a young Rod Steward in ME:A. Not as a love interest, but just for kicks. Oh and massive props for Blondie! If you haven't seen it yet, check out CBGB (movie) starring the late great Alan Rickman. Some of the actors they got to play the various bands are out and outright spooky. :P

In Revelation, Kahlee also dyed her hair brown and eat a pill to darken her skin just so she could travel with Anderson undetected. Because apparently a white blonde chick attract too much attention. :/ either way, I'm not sure it ever meant to be taken seriously. The novel was written in a narrative of a character and it also skewed their own bias so I am able to let it slide. Same goes with FemShep being a white red-headed chick with green eyes who was just as rare as the white blonde chicks in-game. Hardly anyone in the game look like her either even.

I headcanoned that Miranda is a natural blonde who dyed her hair black which make sense why Niket have trouble recognizing her at first.

At the end of the day, the writers themselves was quite liberal about their lore interpretation.. so everyone, don't get your panties in a twist. Your headcanon are your own.

In any case, I never wanted to get into any racist argument. I'm surprised at this thread. lol. My only point is that the more mixing there will be (which is inevitable), the more dark haired people. Dark pigments are the dominant traits, all things being equal...and assuming we're talking about normal births. Even a dark haired, but blue eyed dude like default Shep would be rare.

I don't recall that part where Kahlee dyed her hair... I read the books. Must've slipped my mind.

As lovely as dark hair is, it's a shame that Mass Effect lore tends to consider blonde hair so extremely scarce.

I see no problem with blondies in ME, at least lorewise.

It was something that I remember from the first novel which I felt stupid anyway... as if a darker tan would fool DNA scans.

Honestly, I expected the more space-worthy we are, the less tendency for our gene to favor darker pigments and adapt to sun exposure. Besides it will take many generations before humanity's features to became homogenized... 2100s is still too early for these to happen.

And I'm not sure blue and blonde genes would be watered down. I'm a brown Asian with supposedly dominant dark-hair dark-eyes and tanned features... and yet I have blue eyed half-asian cousins and they got married and I have nieces who are also blue-eyed and blonde... genes are weird...

Late to this thread, and instead of reading through 30 pages of what would likely be highly amusing/humanity degrading musings on blonde hair or thread deviating stuff, I'm just going to throw in my own opinion.

Basically, yes please to blonde hair, on NPCs, squadmates, and as an option in the Character Creation.

Chalk this up to my lack of having played enough games that use Character Creation, but I personally thought Oblivion and Skyrim had good varied options for blonde hair (its up for debate whether the blonde hair implemented was good or realistic enough, but the options were there).

AS for seeing blonde hair on NPCs, and other characters, and it being in opposition to what is established in the lore, I really couldn't care if its changed. If seeing more blonde hair is a HUGE break in established lore, and causing all sorts of despair, then, I honestly wonder what would happen if it turns out that there are male asari's too...

That's mostly because traits can be passed on without being expressed.  The genes for light eyes and hair may skip a few generations but what we'd actually see with mixing is an increase of the frequency of the gene in populations where it had hitherto been nonexistent.  And with subsequent generations we'd see blondes with blue eyes born from parents who are carriers for the traits but don't express it themselves.

Yes

The idea that blonde hair and similar recessive traits will vanish is based on a misunderstanding of the idea of dominant traits.  Dominant just means the recessive gene isn't expressed, not that it ceases to exist or won't be passed on.
