I'm very close to soloing Nightmare late teens with my SS, however the shield dudes just wreck me.

Is that just the way it is?   Some things never change?

1. War horn

2. Panic passives

3. Parry

4. Flashing steel

5. Hidden blades then kill the shield bearer before the end of the animation

6. Charging bull from the back

7. PI

8. Attack during their mace swing animations

9. Walk off and kill something else

Here. So many ways of wrecking Shield bearers.

Once a shield bearer has you in their sights, and is tracking you, it is very difficulty.  Especially if there are 2-3.

The panic passives don't work that great, honestly.  War horn (edit: War cry) is probably your best bet.. but I dislike losing a slot for it.

I took my level 19 SS, and ran a solo routine dragon just several weeks ago, to finish the routine dragon challenge since I only needed like 200 experience to level to 20.  The shield bearers were STILL a pain the ass.

If you aren't soloing, it is pretty simple to walk away, or move in when they have aggro'd against someone else... but solo'ing it is a pain.

Try the dualist instead if you want to solo..  If I can't find someone to team up with, I usually run a solo with my arcane warrior, reaver, archer, etc..   Then, when I people join, I switch to the SS for the next run.

It is much easier with the PI.   You just have to survive long enough for they to swing and then throwing blade or hidden blade and they are dead.   I have switched from Charging Bull to War Cry (with upgrade) to give me more time when 5 or 6 shield guys ambush me.   Charging Bull is useless when there are more than 3 shields around....taunting them with War Cry actually seems to encourage them to swing more often.

Also I like the War Cry animation on the silent sister.  It is like she is crying "I am a woman, hear me roar!" if she still has her tongue.

Flashing steel is good. Or since you're the SS, just wait for them to swing then got them

Plus war cry is working as intended...

I was less impressed with war cry than what I hoped when I tried it.  It didn't shatter guard that well (unless I was poorly placed against the dragon) and it is a pretty short duration.

War Cry?  It doesn't shatter guard... it gains guard for you, but the upgrade of WC is "working as intended" as it give is much much more than just 200 armor. :P  It is like a poor man Walking Fortress. :P  It is great with bolters!

Tactics that have worked for me in the past:

Upgraded War Horn with a weapon with a proccable (is that even a word?) ability, like Silencer's hidden blades, can trigger said proc, not always that reliable.

Combat roll, if you time it right, you can actually roll through the enemy & attack from behind.

This is primarily for only the most dire situations where I need to solo, if I feel like grinding out a Super item chance (still looking for 2 Hakkon's, PI, and a few 27s)

If I was using Throwing Blades (for crit volume), Flashing Steel (guard), Hidden Blades (Damage), and combat roll (no PI), could I really drop anything for war horn?

Currently best daggers I have are Savage Thorn and Nameless Blade (does the damage bonus work?, if not, Dagger of the Dragon, Bosun's out because soloing)

This came up because I certainly held my own tanking Demon's zone 1 through 3, zone 4 Despair Demon's said "Uhh, nope."

It might be better to do Reaver, I'll try her next.  I do have Hakkon's Valor.

Ah damn.. I meant War Horn.

That is interesting though.. not sure I ever picked up the upgrade to War Cry itself.. or if I did, I didn't pay much attention to it.  I think I thought it was borken the other way... as in .. no extra armor.

If soloing, isolate the shield dudes whenever possible or save for last. Kiting is key. Wait for the weapon swing. Attack with Charging Bull. Run away. Rinse and repeat. All other skills mentioned in this discussion are useful, but more importantly is the "flow of battle" passive.

Bear mauls the wolves. Turn your back to them.

Combat roll behind and charge, knocking them down. Combat roll is a must. Really helps when YOU get knocked down, which will inevitably happen. If you have a PI amulet, well you're playing the game on easy mode.

Throwing blades or Hidden blades when knocked down or between their attacks.

If you have flashing steel you don't need to worry about shield dudes since it penetrates shields.

Upgraded throwing blades is working as intended too. It's like a beefed up mark of death with minimal CD. Try spinning blades too. More CD reduction.

Use bloody bargain if you have it. Literally amazing with SS (well with any rogue).

I use upgraded war cry to generate guard and get the 200 armor bonus. So I don't need to worry about my health.

Anyone in this thread saying the shield bearers aren't that bad needs to disclose if they have the physical immunity amulet or not.

A single shield bearer kept my reaver on her back for a good twenty seconds between getting knocked over with the mace to being knocked over from the shield.  Having that amulet would make this a breeze and make many of these strategies work beautifully.

I try the strategy of running around a lot and trying to get the shield bearer between me and a teammate, but that is harder on solo.

Without PI, solo vs shield bearers as a melee would be painful indeed.

If in a team, then seriously just walk away and kill something else, saves everyone some time and effort.

Yeah, it has changed my targeting priorities.  Obviously assassin type characters ALWAYS come first, but if I am running as a mage-type with warriors or silent sisters I now target a solo shield bearer over a solo archer, all other things being the same.
