Anything related to social justice soapboxes, "inclusion" for the sake of inclusion, or making a statement on some real life issue

Tumblr anything

Forced token minority representation that requires changing lore for it to make sense or stands out from everything else for the wrong reason

Pinocchios

@Midnight Bliss:  I'd be more interested in what archetypes you think are interesting as you have - in one form or another - covered most everything there can be.

Because one man's "interesting man with a checquered past" is another man's "brood emo badass" or "broken bird".

My only request... is that these NPCs be interested in pursuing their own agendas... not blindly following mine.

Lastly, the less something reflects upon real life... the less merit it has to me - so I'm totally against you with that one.

Also... some of your "archetypes" are laughably not archetypes in the sense of the word at all... but they sure are flame bait.

What I don't want to see:

- Liara V2

- James V2

- Joker V2

- overly sexual women whose every line is a come-on. I hated that about Sha'ira but once she dropped that kind of speech I liked her.

- cringeworthy military bravado speak. I hate that bull caca with a passion. It's so embarrassing. I'm not 5 years old anymore.

and more importantly I don't want blind devotion bordering on brown-nosing. I avoid speaking to Cortez for that reason alone.

Isn't that the point of a discussion though?

mostly don't want to see the stupid & overused 'promiscuous bisexual' crap again

no reverse stereotype characters either - they're as bad as an extremely stereotypical one. like, a krogan who is the exact opposite of a 'typical' krogan just for the sake of subverting stereotypes

oh and no tough warrior ladiez (or guys, but I don't think we've had a guy like this yet?) with a secret romantic/squishy emotional side or whatever pls

Pinnochios. If I want to watch Data discover what it means to be a real boy, I'll watch goddamn TNG.

Give me HK-47 v2.0 if you wanna include a synthetic.

Flat is justice. Maybe throwing in thousands years old loli also for a bonus.

Personality tropes I'm against :

No copies of previous Mass Effect characters - For example, I loved Garrus but they shouldn't make a new character just like Garrus. Garrus was Garrus, no one else could be as badass or unique as he was, same with all the other ME characters.

I'm okay with a tough female character but she shouldn't be centre of the focus - this was Cassandra's problem, she was in the spotlight so much sometimes I wondered why I was playing the inquisitor instead of her.

Less innocent teenage girl-esque romance types - Tali, Josephine, and even Liara (ME1). It's stale and dull most of the time, the romance needs spice as much as it needs sweet

Annoying jerks who get in the way of the hero constantly for idiotic reasons - The Council, Udina and Roderick

Less characters promoting the whole LGBT thing - Don't get me wrong, I don't mind having gay or trans characters, but I don't need cutscenes devoted to explaining why their gay or trans and telling me it's wrong to see it as bad. My hero don't care if you gay, trans, straight, asexual or whatever, s/he just care whether you get the job done foo

Agree mostly. I think. I'm not sure what "Tumblr anything" means, but I probably don't want to know. I only vaguely know what tumble is.

What's a "Pinocchio" and "Tour guide" and "Dungeon Master" arch-type though?

But I disagree on the "weird alien" one, cuz that was Javik to some degree, no? Always getting confused 'bout us "primitives". As long as it's not lamely done like Data from ST:TNG then some cultural confusion is OK I think. Humans need to do it right back though.

To add to the list:

- No catgirls and their derivatives (keep weebo fetishes outta MA)

- No nerds (like Otacon)

- No panic-under-pressure types ("We're all gonna die man!")

- No edgy hipster types (maybe this is close to your "emo" one)

- No player-character groupies (keep the Liaras and the Conrads out)

Outside of squad mates....

No Zerg/Star Ship Troopers/Alien (the movie) aliens - we already had the rachni.

And I don't want the antagonist to be the cliché "evil guy", like Corypheus, Sauron, or Voldimore. Lame villains plague the fantasy genre, so keep them out of Sci Fi! I want a villain whose goals you can get behind, but whose methods you have to stand against. TIM was a pretty good example of this. Magneto is another.

Bioware tend to reuse their archetypes and I've played their games long enough to see this pattern. If Bioware writers actually read this, we already know you guys have trope templates for everything.

See Data from Star Trek TNG for Pinocchio, he was the trope personified.

Tour guide is a character who exists to "guide" the story forward and explain everything to the other characters/player, usually because they're the only one who has the knowledge required for some reason or because they're amazing, Talis in DA2 MotA was one of these.

Dungeon Master is similar to a Tour guide, but it will usually be a god analog / a godlike character who has tons of power and knows about everything, and has to help everyone. Not surprisingly, the Dungeon master from the old cartoon D&D was one of these.

The weird alien I was thinking something more in the vein of Data, Alf, Mork, ect - I could see how some people might think Javik was one of those, but I don't consider him one.

1) You forgot EDI.

2) Like Orek in Diablo 3.

3) God I hate those!

4) Like...........nah, you got it covered. As in, those supposedly cute & cuddly strange creatures that we're supposed to absolutely adore.

I'd mainly like to see each member of the crew have their own unique personality, I'm hoping they won't be 2.0 versions of the trilogy's crew.

Funny how they all come from DA.

Also funny how they aren't strictly heterosexual. Where's Cortez?

Why do I get the strange suspicion this is really a thread about embracing odd fetishes more than avoiding cliches?

As long as the writing is good and the character makes sense, I really don't care what BioWare does.

Pretty much everything to do with Thane:

1) Dead Spouse
2) Estranged Son
3) Terminal disease

Frankly, I'm good with the Carth syndrome. I thought Cortez was handled pretty well, but he had to be yet another grieving widow(er.)

4) Estranged father. There is a lot of parental issues in BW games as a whole.

I don't have anything else to add, since other posters covered the points I wanted to make. :P

Psst...Boobs aren't a personality type. Hurrah for natural boobs, no matter the size!
