I sort of suck at building mages as my main focus always is my dual wielding rogue inquisitor. I'm thinking of respeccing Vivienne as she is all over the place. Here's how it looks right now, at level 17 with a couple of Amulets of Power:

SPIRIT

Barrier

Guardian Spirit (does it even work?)

Peaceful Aura (does it even work - enemies are almost always hellbent on focusing on Vivienne?)

Dispel + Strengthened Veil

STORM

Chain Lightning

Energy Barrier

Conductive Current

Static Charge

Static Cage + Lightning Cage (probably my favorite)

INFERNO

Immolate

Flashpoint

Clean Burn

Pyromancer

Fire Mine

WINTER

Winter's Grasp (helpful on lower levels)

Fade Step + Frost Step (a must as I often have to save her with it during fights)

Frost Mastery

Winter Stillness

Mana Surge

KNIGHT-ENCHANTER

Nothing (!)

Any tips appreciated. I won't control her manually with some minor exceptions, so it should work rather well with the AI. Also, guess my main use for her is crowd control and supporting my damage dishing rogue and Cassandra.

You should definitely use the knight enchanter tree because that is her strength and if you get new points use them for that tree especially Spirit Blade + upgrade - Fade Cloak + upgrade then Combat Clarity and Fade Shield and if you still get points then go for Veiled Riposte and Knight Protector the ones i mentioned are all very good

If it's for AI build, from my experience AI is not too smart on how to use fade cloak and spirit blade. I recommend going down the left side of the knight enchant tree to get fade shield to help keep her alive. I spec her to do manly fire spells with the inferno pact belt. Build her mainly on crit damage and my viv can hit up to 23000-25000 on fire mine. For protection I go for ice mine array with ice armor. Main powers she uses is barrier, fire mine, ice mine array, static cage, dispel, winters grasp, energy barrage, immolate.

Yes, the AI sucks at using Spirit Blade, which is why I didn't bother with that tree now. Nice tips, I'll follow them, thanks!

Really if i take Vivienne with me she uses Spirit Blade and Fade Cloak lots of times she is for me by far when it comes to the AI the best of the three

What difficulty and/or Trials are you running? I makes a difference.

I'm running NM with Even Ground and Walk Softly, so Dispel is a priority. This is my current (coincidentally XP level 17) Viv build. It does what PawsPause suggested, except no fire. I concentrated her on Winter and Spirit.

1. Spirit Blade (DISABLED in AI, I don't want her closing to melee combat range)
2. Combat Clarity
3. Fade Shield
4. Knight-Protector
5. Fade Cloak
6. Decloaking Blast
7. Barrier
8. Elegant Defense (arguably should be respec'd elsewhere)
9. Guardian Spirit (yes, it works fine, and she dies alot so this helps)
10. Peaceful Aura
11. Dispel
12. Transmute Magic
13. Winter's Grasp
14. Winter's Ruin
15. Mana Surge
16. Winter Stillness
17. Ice Mine (PREFERRED in AI)
18. Chilling Array
19. Ice Armor
20. Resurgence (KE Focus ability, optional)
21. Energy Barrage

Actives
1/ Spirit Blade (I sometimes control Viv, so I want this, but never let the AI use it)
2/ Fade Cloak (Has to be in active slot for AI to use it)
3/ Barrier
4/ Dispel
5/ Winter's Grasp
6/ Ice Mine
7/ Resurgence
8/ Energy Barrage

Then I give her a fire staff and Belt of Winter Pact (which is why she dies a lot) and she's all set.

I'm playing on Nightmare, with Even Ground and Walk Softly.

@Patricia08, I had Spirit Blade controlled by the AI for Vivienne during my first play through and it was suicidal every single time. I don't know, perhaps they have bettered the AI in subsequent patches.

Thanks for the tips, much appreciated!

EDIT: I noticed a huge difference right from the start after respeccing her. Chiling Array is perfect.

Resurgence is a must for me. I like Fade Cloak too. I seem to be one of those that have no problem getting Vivienne to use Spirit Blade on her own. If anything, she uses it too much. There's times when i'll be fighting a dragon and want to keep her at a distance and she'll be right there up close using the blade.

Yes, I also chose Resurgence, but I don't have it among the 8 actives, so exactly as PapaCharlie9's tips above, except I have Static Cage instead of Resurgence there. Can switch to Resurgence if needed.

Anyway, it's an amazing difference - she went from some sort of slapstick magician to a powerhouse standing in the middle of her Chilling Array. I don't have to baby sit her at all now. Frost seems fitting for her as well, considering the introductory cutscene and her personality.

1. Ditch that ungrateful female dog
2. Turn Dorian in to knight enchanter.

3. Enjoy.

Despite AI been stupid and bad with a spirit sword, he still can do that.

As they say if there is a wish there's a way.

I have not unlocked Resurgence yet and the rest same here she sometimes uses it to often to in battle and then especially against Dragons she sometimes looses a bit of health but it is never life threatening i think in all my playthroughs she never used a health potion but i'm not 100% sure about that though

Delightful.

I'll try letting AI control her Spirit Blade - we'll see how it goes.

What's your IQ? If you have a Warrior or DW Rogue, having Viv AI SB does have one advantage: she'll be right next to you when you need Barrier/Revival because you are about to die or are dead. That's assuming you set her to Follow Controlled and that you aren't in Stealth most of the time.

Of course, that means having Revival as an active and giving up on something else.

If you want Viv in a supporting role, as you said in the OP, best to disable SB for AI.

Yes, I want her supporting from a distance. I'll try out how she manages Spirit Blade, though. My inky is a DW Rogue.
