Mass Effect science is based on space magic and not real world science. It's not even remotely close to being grounded in realism and at this point BioWare has been developing MEA too long to change it. Even if they could, I don't see why BioWare would let realism get in the way of storytelling, which is what they always put first. It's an interesting thought, nonetheless, but I don't see it having any impact on Mass Effect whatsoever.

Gravitational waves are so weak that you couldn't "surf" anything. That's why they were so damn hard to discover and required one of the most sensitive instruments ever built, years of observation and independent confirmation by another identical instrument to even detect in the first place.
