So like an idiot I got to Skyhold without getting the final part of this codex entry. According to the Wiki it can randomly be found on hostile mages in the Hinterlands, and I've found a spot where I can reliably get mages and/or templars to spawn. I've reloaded over 50 times and killed hundreds of enemies, but none have dropped the codex. I'm beginning to worry I'm permanently screwed out of it. Has anyone got any insight or advice? It's hardly the end of the world but I would really like to have a complete codex.

According to Wiki "Outskirts, dropped by rebel spellbinders fighting Inqusition scouts SE of the camp". So you must have misunderstood about it being random. They're dropped by specific enemy. I doubt you can get it if you didn't get it during that fight.

(To be more specific than Wiki, the ones that drop it are two spellbinders fighting with two Inquisition scouts near the Astrarium. They're easily recognisable.)

 

But... Are you sure it's the one you're missing? It's kinda hard to miss on that one if you pick up the loot after each fight.

If you go on the talk page, a user mentions that it can be dropped randomly (although I imagine that specific spot does result in a higher drop rate, and that is where I've been farming mages/templars anyway). I never actually ran into that fight in the first place pre-Haven, and I've checked my codex and I am in fact missing the one that begins "The fools...".

Hmnmn... I never got it this way. I mean, other way than from those two spellbinders. 

 

Either way, I loaded really early save of my game. This doesn't seem to be connected to completion of Apostates in Witchwood quest, since I made sure to make it first. Spellbinder still dropped it (and they were still there, fighting Inquisition scouts).

 

I must say I have doubts about random drop that user on Wiki spoke about. Things like this are rarely random. Even part of Codex entry: Templar Encampment is dropped by specific enemy in specific location.

 

And sorry for correcting, but...

...you coudn't run into that fight pre-Haven

Sounds like I can't get it then. Oh well. And yes, I wrote Haven instead of Skyhold. Oops.

You only need one codex to get the quest anyway.
