I think Andromeda should have a rat race

A fuzzy rat race would be adorable. My rat would be a Dumbo eared rat named Dumbledore.

Anthropomorphic alien races are somewhat .... unoriginal.
It's not very likely that on some far away planet, an animal just like Earth's rats would develop. It would imply that life develops in very uniform fashion regardless of variables across all worlds. Even on Earth, with all the wacky animals in Australia, we know that to not be the case.
Fish on other planets I can see. Water being necessary for "life" - but they would be very different than Earth's fish. Maybe the most we can expect is a "furry mammal with a tail".

I really don't want Skaven in the future. They are a pain in the past, think of the horror what they can create (that will most likely explode) in mass effect.

I don't know. BioWare seems to love them. So maybe they're good? (Not!) Me, I'd love to have em just so I can feed em to my snake. Andromeda needs a snake tank. Hamsters are for kids.

Hey OP, side note: you should check out Warhammer: End Times - Vermintides, actually a pretty fun game. If you like to kill rats, it's for you.

This is likely generally a true statement, within reason. We know that life and evolution follow certain rules, and that biomechanics and physiology are absolutely constrained by the laws of physics. This means, necessarily, that nature is NOT free to explore all feasible anatomic possibilities with respect to life. But, it can explore a hell of a lot, and an account of the biodiversity on Earth now and in its past is proof of this.Anthropomorphic alien races are somewhat ....
But certain things will always be true, regardless of world or of the physical substrate of life. For example, we know that enhanced information processing in a nervous system requires that neurons be gathered into ganglia first, in a primitive state, which inevitably leads to encephalization. This is the field of research that I work in. Evolution, necessarily, is constrained by this simple fact of information processing - if you want to process information in a complex and integrated fashion, you need a brain, not a diffuse and unorganized neural net. This fact is universally true, it follows from the mathematics of information theory. Thus, I would expect that on any alien world with advanced animal life, they would have a nervous system with clearly identifiable and comparable processing structures to what we find on Earth.
Similar comparisons could be drawn elsewhere in comparative anatomy and physiology. A leaf, for example, has a high surface area to volume ratio because this configuration allows maximum absorption (of electromagnetic radiation. Similarly, the ears of an elephant have a high surface area to volume ratio because this configuration allows maximum exchange of thermal energy and radiation with the environment.
So, I have no doubt that when and if we discover alien life, we will find structures that are clearly identifiable and intuitive with respect to life on Earth. But it is also clear that we will find truly alien structures as well, with no comparison to life on Earth, because life on Earth did not evolve in a given environment (such as a higher atmospheric pressure, lesser gravity, etc.). But in either case, the structures are intuitive, derive from and are constrained by physical laws.
So, I tend to agree that randomly stumbling across a "rat race" would be absurd in the highest degree. Bioware can be more creative than that. But in the vastness of the cosmos, it is not without reason that on some alien world, something that superficially resembles a given genera of life on Earth may exist.
