I made an Artificer build topic last year, long before Trespasser came out and changed the ballgame. This is a great build topic on the subject using the Trespasser additions.
Link it here. Never hurts to have something to compare to.

The thing with the Artificer is that there is very little you can go wrong. It works with anything.Personally, here's how I build my Artificer Rogue.

This is more of a roleplay build, hence why I have Stealth in there. I prefer my Leaping Shock to knockdown and perform crowd control. Besides, not having Stealth is like not having Energy Barrage or Barrier, it just feels wrong.
can one make a DW Artificer a legit build? or is it a square peg round hole kind of thing ?

To be a good Double Dagger Rogue, regardless of specialization, all you need to do is listen to Ra's al Ghul from Batman Begins.
Always mind your surroundings
That's all. How do I play it ? Well, I Stealth, get close to a target and unleash hell. I use Flank Attack to close the gap. I use Elemental Mines, Spinning Blades and Throwing Blades as my source of crits and masterwork procs, I use Evade to get the hell outta dodge. I use Spike Traps to CC the hell out of targets and kill them. Fallback Plan is a great "Oh shite !" ability that also resets your cooldown. For distance targets and teleporting enemies, I use Throwing Blades.
Alternatively, you can replace Flank Attack with Hook & Tackle but you will need 32 skill points for that to that would only be feasible for Human Rogues. Hook & Tackle can also help you with teleporting enemies since you can latch onto them if you use the alternative upgrade.
Compared to the archer playstyle, it is more hands on and you need to be aware of enemy telergaphing. By this I mean every enemy telegraphs their attack. They always have an animation before they go berserk or rage or use a heavy power attack. When you see those, evade away.
One thing I have to remind you is that this build is not a mix-max DPS build but something you can easily get into and use.
Been playing a Rogue and wanted to try out Artificer, just got to Skyhold and got my Quillback Spines, and now I'm going at it...but the 5% bonus from Take Them Down isn't showing under my attributes? If I stick Varric in the party, I got the bonus from him, but not on my own character...is it only supposed to boost other party members, or am I supposed to get the buff too? And if I am, any guesses why it's not showing up?
Did you check your crit chance before buying the passive?
If you did and it didn't go up 5%, check again when you are in combat. Some buffs aren't added until in combat.
You can also use a Tactician's Amulet to respec and try with and without.

Can this build still be useable without the upgrades from the Trespasser dlc? Since I'm only on the Ps3 i don't have access to it.
Pretty much, the core abilities are all there pre-Tresspasser. There's a few little things that you can't do, but the central gameplay, leaping around, pulling yourself into enemies, and making lots of stuff blow up, has been doable since day 1.

That's right.
For the first respec build, only one upgrade is lost, Shot Into Shadows for Leaping Shot. Everything else from the first respec build is available to PS3.
From the full build, you lose these upgrades:
None of those are essential.
