They keep flying up into the sky on some casts, most of the time they all just fly away.

AoE related. Try not to be around teammates when you throw them. Mages are the worst culprits but some passive abilities trigger it as well. I've had it happen near Templar, Legionnaire, Avvar...honestly, it's better to just avoid being near anyone.

I've always thought that it was lag-related.  Does lag not affect it?

Don't throw it right in front of shield dudes, friends with shields, the back of friends, sometimes facing the bottom of the stairs or debris found strewn about in all the maps. Among a few of the game's anomalies. Lag may have something to do with it, but it occurs even in my own lobby. Balloon mines

As Minous said, it seems to fly off of teammates, the worst allies that trigger it from my experience are Avaars, Legos, Sarebaai, and Arcanes, but any guard or barrier casters can cause it.

It's safest to throw them when you are not logged on.

Bide your time and teabag them into the fade? Don't open doors if they want you to, open doors if they don't want you to, spend 90% of the game stealth-hiding, don't collect gold or only collect gold, wait for them to clear a treasure room then hit the door to the next zone... Be creative.

Go into stealth, run ahead of the group, and toss your mines.  Then go back into stealth and retreat as necessary.

 

If your teammates don't understand that style of play, get new ones.

 

Or practice teabagging as Minuos suggested.

Then:

 

1. Rage quit from that lobby

 

2. Switch to a different class

 

3. Don't use elemental mines

 

4. Vote kick (at the risk of being kicked)
