I was recently playing mass effect 1 and I realized something I really missed about that game. The terrifying complexities of adventuring out in space. The little things that make you really think. The mummified salarian, how did he get there, was he alone or did his companions leave him to die? This might have somthing to do with my similar fascinaton with Everest mummies but I hope with the return of the Mako we get a more of that frontiersman feel. The fact that Our spacesuits might not protect us from everything, that others may have tried before and failed. The discovery of lost reminants of civilizations we will never be able to fully comprehend. And perhaps to be the first to conquer new untouched planets. Or even just the thought that if we run into trouble there is no one out here who can help us.

Maybe I'm romanticising but I'd love to hear what little things will help make the game for everyone else.

Is nostalgic hope anything like anticipating regret?

Nostalgia is a dangerous thing. I'd take off your rose-tinted glasses immediately and judge MEA on its merits rather than what you wish it to be. I'm cautiously optimistic, but we haven't even seen gameplay footage yet. I'd keep some distance until then if I were you.

ME1 definitely has my favorite tone and content of the series, and even though I'm not the nostalgic sort I think that style would work better for a new setting than the ME2 or ME3 styles. ME2 made everything feel small and lesser-than, so that would kill the tone I think they want to set. And ME3 had no sense of exploratory wonder or discovery at all, so that would be even worse.

To me ME1 was a kind of magical experience that the sequels never lived up to. The sense of wonderment it caused in me was immeasurable.

I suppose it kind of makes sense that it worked like that though. ME1 was basically introducing you to the galaxy, ME2 was basically a sort-of-caper-plot in a static environment, and ME3 had all of it collapsing in on itself. Given this is a new galaxy, I can't imagine that they'd go anyway other than the direction ME1 did. If this is the start of a series, it could follow a similar pattern though.

Yeah, I feel the exact same way. I loved/love the unknowable eeriness of ME1 whilst doing paranormal side-quests. It's almost mesmerizing in a way.

I wouldn't really call it nostalgic, the game has always gave me that sort of tendency.

What will make Mass Effect Andromeda work for me is not having any expectations going into the game and not look back and hope elements of the old games come back.  It is what it seems these boards refuse to do and when the game is released will instantly hate it because "its not what I expected" its one of the reasons why I am glad BioWare has shown so little of the game so far and I hope that continues.

I know for me what will always make Mass Effect 1 the best in the franchise is that everything was new, but sequels are never able to do that for they have established the foundation of the franchise.

Don't get me wrong, I really liked ME1, but doing the same minigame over the same dried up Salarian corpse on planets that were just basically different colored rocks just didn't really give me the sort of sense of the "terrifying complexities of space exploration" you're describing.  The game made the corpses and probes and such feel about the same as the minerals and the crates.  Although ME2 and ME3 moved away from the theme of planetary exploration, I found the set pieces much more interesting and varied than those in ME1.

You describe ME1 as if it was the greatest experience ever... ME1, in my opinion, suffered the same issues DAI did. It was too ambitious, thus the game essentially was mediocre in almost every regard. The only thing that saved it was the story and characters, because the gameplay and exploration were all rather subpar. It also made sense it was more open than ME2 and ME3 as it was entirely dependent on Shepard's mission. It wouldn't have made a lot of sense for Shepard to just aimlessly explore planets while collectors were abducting human colonies or reapers were harvesting worlds. MEA has the opportunity of having some similarities with ME1, but I hope it's FAR superior.

ME1 is my favorite in series, in terms of tone/setting/story.  Not even ME2 can beat that.  But in terms of gameplay and having a satisfying ending, ME2 all day.  I hope they can take the best of ALL three games, and put it into one.

But at the same time, I want what is familiar to us in ME:A, at the same time have elements that sets ME:A apart from the original trilogy.

In terms of the exploration theme, perhaps rummaging through an archaeological dig site will uncover a mystery for us to solve - as a subtext to the main plot? This would be far better that the valueless Normandy Crash site exploration (though it was a very nice homage to our beloved SR-1 and crew). After all, what momentous value did any of Liara's discovered artifacts reveal? (There was the plan for the Crucible she found on Mars.) Just wondering.

Wouldn't mind a general return to the feel and ideas of ME1 - it was after all the best of the lot. It had a sense of scale, and the best antagonist (well, the only ME to actually HAVE one...), the plot was easy but had some nice twists, I loved the romances, I loved the showdown starting with Virmire and the damn damn battle of teh citadel is still the most epic of them all - all people love the suicide mission, I get more thrills when we suit up and go out of the citadel, while Soveriegn is blasting the fleet and all that - perfect showdown, and a true sense of accomplishment in the end, and triumph!

So yeah, nostalgia for the win! (Hey, I am of the same crowd that thinks the new Star Wars is awesome! New doesn't mean automatically better ^^)

I really hope so I also miss this kinds of touches. It's nice when they have small follow ups and you can find out more details theyre like funny mini stories within the game.
