I like the idea. Although, "backstory" may not be the right word, it should have...character.

In Assassin's Creed Black Flag, the Jackdaw was my Baby! I loved that ship. there was a connection. I think the way it started was, well, we stole the ship; but then we had to escape through enemies, a hurricane, rogue waves and water spouts. We barely made it out alive. The Jackdaw was completely torn apart by the time we did make it out. Wood and splinters and holes everywhere. The main character said, "By God she took some hits didn't she?" Then he says, "......I think I'll keep her."   Let's go, Boys! We're taking this one home.

I loved that ship ever since.

However, it is a different type of gameplay. In AC4, you're extremely reliant on your ship day in and day out. We're not going to be doing space battles with the Tempest..I don;t think. But I did feel some of that connection with the Normandy.

It would be nice if the new ship was not quite so sleek as the Normandy--including being able to implement constant upgrades to make it better, as well as maintenance....and a few bobble heads never hurt.

Next we'll be asking if our fish tank should have a backstory... It's a ship. It's a means of transportation to take us from point A to point B. I don't care if the ship has a happy story or a sob story (ship's father ship and mother ship were killed by the reapers). What I care about are the people on the ship. They are what gives the ship character, not the ship itself. Of course, it's always possible we may get another EDI, which could arguably be considered the ship's personality. Only time will tell.

I now imagine a gameplay mechanic that can give the ship a "personality". Interconnected parts of the ship that influence each other's performance, require maintenance and energy flow, with a large number of customization options available. So in the end your upgrades will allow you to predict how the ship will behave. Will it drop you out of FTL due to stabilizers you decided not to buy on Omega because of their capability of massive energy outbursts in ship-to-ship combat? Will you be able to initialize emergency repairs in the middle of a battle by redirecting the drive core energy to unaffected sections dropping shields on the affected section? Introduce a small degree of randomness to the options presneted above and the ship will have "personality" and it'll be what the player decides it to be. Your ship can be a reliable vessel with steady but low damage potential or capable of huge damage but with high risk of failure in different sections of the ship. Make this choice for every section of the ship and add an extra layer of choice on how much energy to divert to every section - can be fun! Highly doubt that we'll get that much detail for the ship but would've loved to see this implemented.

Vazgen. good to see you on the boards again! You've been gone for quite a while.

I think it's a nice idea you've got there (a bit like FTL, isn't it?) but I think for this to work we'd really need space battles in the game, no?

Hey man! Got back into ME recently, slowly building up hype for Andromeda :D New job leaves little time to check the forums, though I do try ;)

Not necessarily space battles but some kind of danger. Environmental hazards can serve that purpose too, planetary defense systems (so there is no ship-to-ship combat), simple FTL risks - being dropped out due to a bad setup and ending up in a hostile cluster... Not to say I'd be against space battles, of course ;) Just an idea for ship "personality". In general, I have noticed that the more you spend tinkering with something in the game, the more attached you grow to it and the more you know all its little quirks. Give a degree of predictable risk here and you'll have a "personality". Imagine this in the game :D
